Farewell Melior

As of today, I no longer have a laptop.

As of two weeks from now, I will have a laptop again. A Vaio FE, with a 2Ghz processor and 1GB RAM, with a 60GB HD and an NVidia GeForce graphics card and a webcam I will never use but the case was a required update to accomodate the graphics card. With a two year warranty and a high performance battery. I'll have free shipping, the tax refund, and the credit for my Toshiba.

Her name will be Namine, and she will be engraved with a line from a Riku/Namine drabble I haven't yet written for lazulisong:

the stars fell like snow
on that night that never happened

I considered naming her after a Last Dreamer character, but Maris didn't fit, and almost all of the rest of the cast would just be asking for trouble -- like, Law? Graham? Remington? I don't think so. However, I have a standing tradition of naming hardware after other people's fiction. My HP laptop was ZERO, after the gundam from Gundam Wing, which explains why it was so evil and eventually exploded. My external hard drive, bought in ZERO's hayday, was the corresponding Wing, only like Gundam Wing to Gundam Wing ZERO, not evil.

My desktop succeeding ZERO was Ceiynt, after a Rosemary Edghill character, and like his paladin namesake, he has been faithful and devoted and a little underhanded. My Toshiba laptop was named Melior from the same source, and like his namesake, he has been clueless and unhelpful and high-maintnenace and inexplicably lovable, so I am sorry to see him go.

And now, a Namine.

Please live up to your namesake's creativity and gentleness, and get along well with Ceiynt and Wing. ♥

(Oh! I forget what name my little Sony Clie might have, because I haven't hooked it into my computer in about two years, but my iPod is Ruth! Named after Ceiynt's charge and Melior's girlfriend. omigod if hardware could be sad--

Your computing woes are the most adorable ever.

My iPod was the first piece of computing I ever actually named. I expect, however, that when I get a laptop, it will need a name, too. I am wary of naming it after characters indiscriminately! I've noticed that inanimate objects tend to take on some of the personality of their namesakes, most definitely...

I hope Namine serves you well and only bursts into tears occasionally. ♥

The naming process I went through was kind of along the lines of, "I'm on Kingdom Hearts lately... Who do I like and should name a computer after?" Roxas says A;KJDFH NOT ME and Ela says me! but naming a computer after him is also asking for trouble.

Then I'm running through others. Who do I like, who do I like? Sora? Nah. Riku? Hmm, doesn't feel like a Riku. Hmm, who else, come on... DiZ? NO.

And Namine is just sitting there the whole time not volunteering. But she'd be honored if I named a computer after her-- that is, if I want to-- but please don't think it's necessary--

I have found that not naming my electronics makes them not run. Naming causes other problems, but they RUN.

My current desktop is about four years old, and his name is Roy Mustang, and he's not NEARLY as much trouble as Tao Jun was. I fear to change the wallpaper away from Ed, though; last time I tried that, Roy had a shitfit for a week. I put up a new Ed wallpaper, and he settled right back down.

My cellphone is currently named Tifa, which is probably why I get no reception when she can't see the clouds--

They all WANT names these days! You can't get anything without it wanting to have a device name so it knows what to call itself. I don't want to give them names like "My Free iPod" or "My PDA". D: They need REAL NAMES.

But then they all do seem to take on the characteristics of their namesakes. XD Hopefully "Namine" will bode for a kinder computer experience than most of my names to date -- she's sweet, and helpful, and enjoys gay porn. We should get along!
