Ugh, yes, I agree with the suggestion of court threats if he should try and duck out of paying the return fees. Bouncing payroll checks is completely unacceptable. Generally speaking (and I disclaim that two law classes do not make me an expert), employment is a contract. You work, you get paid for your work. By giving you bad checks, it's entirely possible that it could be argued that he's breaking contract.
