Book-related inquiry

Does anyone have any recommendations for good sci-fi (or fantasy) novels, preferably something with multiple books in a series? My mother shot down my own idea for a gift told me John wanted it for Father's Day, so I'm in the market.

Dragon Riders of Pern by Anne McAffery? It's both Scifi and Fantasy :)

I haven't read real sci-fi in years, but for fantasy, two really good series are The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay (3 books), and the Shannara series by Terry Brooks (original series, 3 books, Heritage series is 4).

Perdido Street Station, by China Mieville (it has a couple of sequels - I've only read The Scar, which is also excellent). Sort of a combination of sci-fi and fantasy, in one genius, complex package.

Fantasy would be the "Rai-kirah" trilogy by Carol Berg. Transformation, Revelation and Restoration. Probably my favorite fantasy novel series ever.

Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. :-) The first one is A Game Of Thrones, I believe. There are four out now and I can't remember if there are three still to be written or two...

Hmm~ He's read Shannara, but I don't think he's read anything by Guy Gavriel Kay. Thanks for the tip. ♥

Oooh, that China Mieville thing sounds like he'd love it. I'll look into that one. :D

And I'm not sure if he's read any Carol Berg, but I have, and I freaking love the Rai-kirah trilogy. ♥♥

How funny, I bought Game of Thrones for like $3 at an airport a long while ago. I read it when it first came out, but never saw it again and have forgotten everything about it! So now I'm looking for a chance to read it again. :D

I'm not sure if he's read it, but I'd be surprised if he hasn't. Everyone raves about it...

Ohhh, that's a good one! Duhr. I should try and sneakily find out if he's read it. :3

The Otherland books by Tad Williams or To Green Angel Tower by the same author. Maybe R.A. Salvatore's War of the Spider Queen.

I suggest the series that starts with Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind - I've only read a couple, but they're all like 600-800 pages long XD; WFR is a really good book :D

Anne Bishop has one trilogy with extras, a second trilogy, and a duology that are all really fantastic fantasy serieses.

Maybe Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn? It's going to be a trilogy, anyway.

Orson Scott Card's series of books starting with Ender's Game. I've only read two of them, but I really liked both.
