Roles we play

I envy [livejournal.com profile] unite her community for RP, I can't bring myself to do something like that. Sometimes I think I'm too timid for RP, lawl. I want to RP anything and everything and instead I sort of wind up not doing anything, and I start all these games but they're never really what I want by the end... I think I fail?!

I've been replaying Tales of Symphonia, because... uh, because I wish Tales of the Abyss had had an affection system like Symphonia did. (NATALIA ENDING. Wait, wait, Guy ending--!) Zelos is such a bitch full of refusal to love me very hard to get to trust Lloyd, although I suppose that makes sense, seeing as Zelos. The only ending I've ever gotten is Colette, but I know that whoa backstory of horror attacks you from Zelos's ending. It's hard to angle for non-Colette endings because it involves being so mean to her. D: (Also because it's hard to get the mean to sink in. Half the time she likes all your dialogue options, like somewhere in her head Colette goes, "Awww, Lloyd is talking! ♥" and she doesn't really pay attention to the words.)

We might go for a Kratos ending, since Zelos is a bitch not trusting of Lloyd. I always wanted to see his wings.

I got my tasty definitely-not-cost-of-living raise at work, but I actually feel pretty lame about it. Why does my boss always walk in when I'm involved in my writing? Ngh. I need a monitor mirror.

Heyyy~ if you ever want to try out RPing sometimes, I have this community called [livejournal.com profile] tastydelicious. It's not really an RP game, but just a place for people to spam and practice characters or continue storylines from dead RPs.

.................... and don't give up on Zelos. ;___;

Y, yeah, but. There's lots of people there. :( It's weird to just jump in with a journal!!

As for Zelos, I don't want to! But I can't help feeling like we're doomed. We're nearing the end of disc one (catching a pretty birdie for Luna) and he's waaaay behind everyone else in affection. I mean, Lloyd and Regal are totally buddies, but Zelos is still like, "I guess he's. Okay." even after Lloyd liked his curry! I don't think we can get enough affection with him in the interim for him to come see us at Flanoir. :\

We were sort of half-heartedly hoping for Zelos, but not paying enough attention to the dialogue choices until recently. That may not work for Zelos. XD He's so high-maintenance.

[identity profile] unite.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
Hm? Well, there are a lot of added journals, but only a few people regularly go, 'CORI LET'S DO SOMETHING AT TASTY.' Seriously, you're welcome to join. 8)

Well, admittedly, Zelos is the most difficult person to get to like you. It took me until my second playthrough (though I didn't really try in my first), and that was with bonus'd affection. My good bud [livejournal.com profile] gargantsurprise, however, was able to do it again and again without the use of Bonus Grade benefits.

RP can be kind of a daunting thing. I'm always a little afraid of games (especially those with really talented players), but I end up trudging in anyhow. I can't resist the fun of it.

I wish that Tales of the Abyss had the affection system. I kept trying to play it like it did, but it never amounted to anything. XD

When I went for the Zelos ending, I spent a lot of the early part of the game catering to Kratos, since those responses usually put off everyone else. I wasn't completely successful (I think I got the scene in the Temple of Shadow, but not the one at Dirk's house), but he did inevitably come a'knockin at Flanoir. It's a tough call, though. He's my favorite, but I find him to be so much more interesting after the Kratos ending. >.>

Is this the bit where I pimp CFUD at you? 8D It might look big and intimidating, but the people are some of the nicest you'll meet on the internet, and hey, you kind of learn as your first character does. And a large proportion of the game has confidence issues, so we're really good about being kind to each other and supporting each other and stuff. It's probably the least wankiest larger RP on LJ, mostly because of the incredible mods.

And you know, I haven't played the "Tales of" games but they're growing casts for a couple of them in CFUD at the moment and I'm sure they'd LOVE to have new people from them.

[identity profile] ccmars.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
I had to follow a walkthrough to get Zelos on my first playthrough, but by the time the Flanoir Scene of Epicness arrived, I was sure the three would be Colette, Sheena and Presea.* I planned to go through all three to see who they were, then reset and go with Colette. Imagine my surprise when Zelos was the last person to show up at the door (although Presea going with everyone else brought my hopes up, so I guess I wasn't totally surprised. *sly smile* ).

When my first game ended and I started a second playthough (I'm now going back to my first to get more Grade), I chose for Lloyd to protest going with Colette to the temple. I adore Colette and felt bad enough for doing so, but then she turned her head as Genis was lecturing Lloyd. If there weren't people in the house I would have screamed, "I'M SORRY COLETTE!" XD

But yeah, don't give up on Zelos if you still can. Have you tried the sidequests and various skits that are scattered around too?

I'm not really sure what to say re: roleplay, because it's easy to say that you have no reason to be afraid of roleplay because you're truly awesome at it, but if telling you that would work, your intimidation probably would have disappeared some time ago. >:

So. More hearts and pom-poms. >: ♥♥♥

the kratos ending pissed me off

[identity profile] slayerofgod.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I was thinking of ToS's affection system with Natalia(and Anise) in mind the entire time I played Abyss. Alas. D:

Zelos *is* a bitch. Or more accurately, he's an immature punk. When you're an ass to everybody you're traveling with and then wonder why they don't like you, you kinda lose my sympathy, horrid past or not.

The Kratos ending is actually pretty awesome. It's a lot better written and thusly makes a lot more sense than any ending not involving the Zelos one.

*s, shuffle*

Well, she probably was paying more attention than we were. XD We kind of pissed him off right at the very first dialogue choice to win affection from him, so. I don't remember why.

I love all those losers, and I like a lot of pairings in TOS, but Zelos is probably one of my two favorite characters, so it'd be sad to murder him. We'll keep trying. :x

It is! You people and your crazy free-RP-comms make me jealous. X3 My biggest concern about joining games is that I'm nitpicky -- if I don't like the format or the players or whatever, my interest dies off quickly, and I'm nervous about being one of those people who chronically joins and then drops RPs. :x

Srsly, why did they give me the choice to say Tear wasn't my type if there was no affection system and they were going to wind up blushing at each other regardless? It's like they meant to put one in and forgot about it. XD

Zelos is definitely one of my favorites -- although no one is shallow, his complexity is in a rare class (him and Mithos?) and the way he can wind up going either way intrigues me. He's a very dynamic sort of character. I definitely won't cry if I go for the Kratos ending, because it's still an interesting twist for Zelos.

We pretty much tried to please Kratos, but Colette, Genis, and Raine are all Lloyd's soul mates. I can't beat them off with a stick. :(

I apped at CFUD once before and I was voted down by a narrow margin. I -- really, really hate the CFUD system of apping. :\ Half the people who voted were like, "I don't know this character but it wasn't funny enough for me." The actual players from the canon I was apping seemed happy to play with me in anon comments, but... I saw someone whose app was much worse than mine get voted in because despite protests of secrecy, it was obvious everyone knew she was someone who already had like a dozen characters there. (That person is still in CFUD, but has since dropped that character, I assume because she, uh, sucked at her.)

I'd love to be in a game like CFUD, but... I don't know. The bad experience has left a sour taste in my mouth. :\

I'm not quite at the "lost child in Sybak" sidequest yet, but I've gotten all his skit points, I think. Zelos likes me the least of all my party members, so I don't know if I'll be that lucky. ;_; But we'll definitely go through everyone who comes to the door. ♥

I know what you mean about Colette, I feel so terrible being mean to her. XD Every time we turn her down at a skit point we're like, "SORRYYYYY. ;_; WHY IS LLOYD SUCH A DICK TO YOU."

True story. Why couldn't I get Natalia-Guy-Anise endings? Or the Jade ending for lulz? When you're in Nam Cobanda and they ask you who your most important person is, I think the Natalia and Guy choices were really sweet. (And. And the Jade choice was hilarious.)

I like Zelos, because in my interpretation of him, I think he thinks he deserves to be hated, so he maintains his superior distance from everyone on purpose and is thus unsurprised by it. I think he was well-written and a little unusual, even if there's a very real possibility of alienating the player as well.

It's obvious that the "major" endings are Zelos, Colette, and Kratos (since you can't get 100% completion without getting those three endings, IIRC). Genis should have been in there too because it makes so much sense for Mithos to kidnap him and try to make him eville, but it didn't work out that way, from my impressions. Everyone else is just kind of filler, I guess?

Stoopid game >:

[identity profile] slayerofgod.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Natalia's scene there. Everybody's like "Why didn't you choose Tear?" and Natalia just goes "Well, we grew up together. It's no surprise he picked me. *Smug grin*" Ah Natalia, don't ever change. <3

I didn't get that kinda vibe from him really. He's self-loathing to be sure, but I don't see the superior distance thing. He is generally well-written though, in spite of the fact that all his real depth is contained in his ending, which as you've demonstrated, is the most irritating thing to get in the game. Bad design decision there.

I was more talking about the fact that Zelos's motivations just don't make sense unless it's his or Kratos's ending. You fight and kill him in the latter, and later Kratos helps save the other party members, which makes sense, since Zelos really had no reason to continue helping you. In the Zelos ending, he has his near-yaoi style bond with Lloyd, which gives him a reason to come back to your side. The other endings just don't give him a good reason to come back to you. They never clearly explain his motivation.

Personally, I wished they could've combined the Sheena and Kratos endings. Although the skit where Zelos keeps trying to clue clueless Lloyd onto the fact that Sheena likes him is hilarious.

And eh, I don't think Genis's would've fit. But then again, I'm biased against the whole Mithos and Genis bonding thing, since I cite it as another example of the game's really dumb racism card butchering something, in this case Genis's characterization.

That's my interpretation -- that Zelos has this illusion that he maintains, and if you like it, then fine, and if you don't like it, then, well, you're probably too good for him. Because Zelos doesn't think what's underneath that illusion is worth it; it's ugly, it hurts people. He doesn't want people to get close to him, to get beyond the illusion. But I freely admit that's a matter of interpretation, as it's never specified beyond the fact that Zelos does not like being Zelos.

I don't know enough about the Kratos ending to assume about his motivations there, and it's been ages since I last beat this game, but you're right -- in the endings that don't specifically address Zelos, he's only half-developed as a character. You get very little idea of his motivations and only a shallow idea of who he is as a person. It's kind of shocking to have played through the game once, gone back to read scripts out of curiosity, and learn that I didn't actually know anything about this character -- and since it's so difficult to get his ending, I have to agree that it was a bad decision on their part, even if it makes sense personality-wise.

That last surprises me, actually. I saw Genis's potential to be a dark character way early in the game -- right out of Iselia he was downright vicious in his dislike of the human masses (growling, "You humans are all the same") and only his friendship with Lloyd reined him in. He's lived his life with the certainty that if people knew what he was, they would hate him, and that was largely proven out. He doesn't believe all humans are universally stupid, but he certainly believed the masses are -- his friends are the exception to the rule, not representative -- so I was willing to buy that later in the game, Mithos would see that same potential. Of course, Mithos strikes me as a little boy in a 4,000 year old angel's body, so if it was overly idealist to think it, that wouldn't surprise me either.

[identity profile] slayerofgod.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, Mithos is definitely a little kid. His stubborn refusal to see logic and instead embrace false insanity after his own sister tells him off pretty much confirms that.

I got the Zelos ending my first time through. :3;; Which was... only this last summer. I think it was worth it, haha. *_*; I guess I have no problems being mean to Colette. I like her, but I - I hate that pairing ._.;;

Awww. I like Lloyd/Colette! I like Lloyd/Sheena too, maybe even more, but...... for some reason I can't really ship it. The cute retardation of Lloyd/Colette compels me. :\

I love Regal, and I love that Lloyd seems to be a total fanboy of his. (Like all of their skit scenes involve Lloyd going "HOW CAN I BE MORE LIKE YOU?") (Interesting that he takes to Regal that much, but not Kratos. Regal is less abrasive, though.) If he weren't so utterly tangential to the ending -- I'm playing it through for a friend, so I'm trying to hit a "major" ending -- I might go for it myself, so I sympathize. X3

I want to write Regal/Zelos fic.

I'm always so amused by the idea of Pronyma chasing after him. Honey, I know it doesn't seem like it, but he's not interested in girls yet!

[identity profile] violetsquirrel.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It does have its issues, but I still think it's better than the usual system of mods being the ones who decide. Also, people have gotten better about voting lately, there's less emphasis on humour and more on voice and flow, although it does still have to be somewhat funny cause that's what the game's about after all. But it is important to give people who don't know the canon a good sense of the character, because they're still people you're going to be playing with a lot, even if you have a cast.

I've only been in the game for less than a year but I haven't personally seen someone get voted in just because people knew who they were. I've seen apps that I thought shouldn't get in get in, but that's the point of the voting system. Everyone's got slightly different criteria for what they want to see. I think people have become more relaxed about voting people in recently, cause there were talks about people being maybe a little harsh a few months ago.

Lots of people archive their threads in their character journals these days, so if you go through the camper and counselor lists you should be able to find individual characters fairly easily ^_^

I glee because not only have I played this, I've gotten both the Kratos ending and either most of or all of the Zelos. I think all, yeees.

... But, "Awwww, Lloyd is talking! ♥" cracked me up so badly.
