Tales of Vesperia PS3 thinkings

So, here are some random observations I had on the PS3 version.

First Strike

Oh, and this terrible, terrible movie. I just have a few major things to say about this, mostly summed up by:

A) Everything about Repede is completely wrong. Canon: Repede is four years old; he can't have been a puppy six months ago. Canon: Yuri and Flynn don't know who his previous owner is; the siblings at the King of Adventure tell them about him. Canon: Repede's pipe and bodhi blastia are from his previous owner, so wtf bodhi blastia. Canon: Repede's mother was a hound for the knights, and in the incident that killed her and their owner, Repede was injured and went missing and was later found by Yuri and Flynn. Canon: Yuri and Flynn are both his owners, he loves them both. This movie hurts my soul.

B) If this movie's events actually happened, Yuri and Flynn's entire history of character interaction would make zero sense. They team up, hunt down, and mutually vigilante murder the bad guy in his fucking library! And then they cover it up, and then apparently took massive amounts of drugs and the entire incident became a dim haze that they can't remember, because only amnesia can explain Yuri and Flynn's actual game dialogue. "What do you mean, do I really want to dirty my hands? I already have -- remember? It was six months ago, you were there, you helped me!"

C) Alexei's part in this movie makes no sense. If he had been this much of a douchebag, why would Flynn admire him so much? Rita's part in this movie makes negative sense. She outright doesn't know about aer krenes in the game! Raven's part in the movie makes no sense. Why wasn't he involved in the knights at all? Flynn's part in this movie makes no sense. Reducing his lawful good stance to childhood trauma is insulting. Flynn and Yuri's relationship in this movie makes negative sense. The boys who were best friends forever and bought their first sword together and swore that they would become knights together are literally incapable of being the same young men who couldn't spend five minutes together without turning to endless bitching. Flynn literally asked him "What is someone like you even doing in the knights?" Really? Really?

Please note that the PS3 version included a miniquest with Hisuka and Shastere, but they didn't revise any of the rest of their canon to fit with this bullshit, such as Repede's backstory. I didn't finish their miniquest yet, but for what it's worth, Flynn and Yuri both seemed a little confused about their existence. ("Are they still in the knights?" "I... thought I knew all the knights by sight..." "They're still wearing their old uniforms...")

Voices

Yuri and Flynn are okay. Repede is clearly voiced by a woman making unconvincing animal sounds, perhaps while drunk. Rita's kind of annoying. Karol sounds like a much more annoying Rita, so sometimes when he sounds less annoying, I can't tell which one's talking. Estelle sounds kind of old for me, weirdly -- maybe motherly. Raven's isn't bad, but I prefer his English voice actor. Judith's voice I will forever associate with this woman -- a boring woman with stupid hair wearing a tent, who is the opposite of sexiness for me, I don't care what she looks like in a bathing suit, I can't do it.

All old people sound really weird (including Don Whitehorse and Belius). Alexei and Duke have severe hotness downgrades. This is also the case with Japanese Saix and Xemnas; since when have the Japanese had problem getting sexy evil voices?? I want to slap Yeager's teeth out of his mouth. I thought his ridiculous German accent in the English version was painful, but his incredibly terrible Engrish in the Japanese is way, way worse. He says "you-tachi". He literally says "you. tachi." I hate him. Ioder was good, but I like his English voice, so.

I was surprised in that I felt many, many English voices made an effort to mimic the tone/timbre of the Japanese voice actors, but in short, I ended up longing for the English voice acting while playing the Japanese PS3 game. Which was a first for me, let me tell you. Why can't the voice acting in anime be as good as the voice acting in these games? I'm trying to think of a Japanese voice I preferred, and I can't do it.

Pairings

The PS3 game includes considerably more emphasis on Estelle/Rita. There are two major extra incidents with them: in the first, they find an abandoned baby in Heliord, which they take care of for the night when the rest of the party flakes out on them. This has already been subtitled, but I can't find it again dflskjgl. In the second, they have a little nighttime chat outside Yuri's room in Zaphias where they determine that they're going to be together forever and gain titles to this effect. I translated this. ♥

Flynn/Rita is suggested in the PS3 version. There's a scene at Yumanju where Sodia and Witcher went to the bathhouse to talk to him about some important thing, but Flynn orders them to relax and take a break for all their hard work! So the girls go into the bathhouse and Karol points out that Witcher and Flynn are kind of father and son-like, and Yuri corrects that they're kind of like brothers, and also that Rita could be pissing off Sodia in there and he's really nervous about it. He wants to get along with Flynn's minions, because he's a fanboy of Flynn's. After we swap places, Rita does in fact antagonize Sodia, kind of a lot, and they end up shouting at each other and then sulk when the boys come back out. Judith playfully suggests that next time Flynn asks Rita to come along with him [and help his brigade] she might be really happy, and Rita sputters but Flynn asks her diligently and she mutters something about "If I have time." Karol is like "...what?" and Yuri says "Flynn and Rita are going on a date." Rita is flustered and infuriated and smacks -- Karol, of course, I guess for allowing Yuri to say this. Flynn is disapproving.

Flynn is also impressively slashy with Alexei and Raven, in addition to Yuri, although a certain scene with Yuri that I have already translated has taken my Flynn/Estelle shipping down a significant notch.

Speaking of pairings...

Khroma->Duke<->Elucifer = canon

There's an extra scene with Sylph if you return to Relewiese Hollow at the end of the game. Yuri says that she (Khroma) must have saved him back at Zaude, because Duke couldn't have done it alone, Duke does not fly, and thanks her. Sylph confirms this and is asked why she was working with him, how she knows so much about him... Someone is all, gasp, you weren't in love with him, were you??

Sylph says, "No... I suppose it's because of my father."

She explains that Elucifer was her father. Entelexeia don't have children the way humans do; usually, they come into being when there's an imbalance in the aer, they are literally created to correct it. That's why they all look so different. Elucifer created Khroma asexually, as a piece of himself, explicitly (IIRC -- god, I wish it hadn't been so late at night when I found this scene by accident, I wasn't really paying attention) because he suspected he would be dying and he wanted someone to take care of Duke, because it would be difficult for Duke to reconcile his death. So she "inherited her father's feelings" for him. That's why it hurts her so much that he's gone on this path, on some misguided quest to avenge her father. She wanted to be his strength, she wanted him to be able to rely on her, and yet...

The party agrees to beat the stupid out of him and moves on. Raven pauses, to tell her gently, "By the way, those feelings? Are what we humans call love." And she says, "But that was the old me. I'm a spirit now. Now all I can ever be is the breeze fluttering past his ear..."

Which is sad and romantic and all, and I ship it. But the only way this could be gayer would be if Khroma were also male. It's difficult to interpret "She's in love with Duke and inherited her father's feelings for Duke" without "Her father was in love with Duke."

On Sodia

Sodia should gain some points with her haters for this: She's the reason Flynn joins your party permanently. Obviously she's felt terrible about her own vigilante justice against Yuri ever since then, she has two different scenes angsting about it at him; and in the PS3 version, Sodia is the one who steps forward the night after everyone's heart-to-hearts (including Flynn's with Patty) and tells Flynn that he needs to go with them.

We have a very deliberate pan on Yuri's face while she's talking.

Yuri forfeited the right to Flynn in his conversation with Sodia. "You're right. Someone like me shouldn't be by his side. I'm just standing in until the right person comes along." And Sodia is -- giving him back, in this scene. Flynn wouldn't have joined your party if not for her steadfast insistence. Part of her experience, and her conversations with Yuri, convinced her that he wasn't the monster she'd thought he was -- or maybe that she needs to have a little more sympathy for monsters. And she encouraged Flynn to go with him.

So, she can have a little bit of slack. She's repenting as best she can for one horrific mistake that she can't forgive herself for.

Flynn in your party

So Flynn joins your party at four points: First when Yuri is in the Tower of Ghasfarost, he hears about it and leaves Sodia and Witcher in charge of the negotiations to go and ~save him~, which is how he gets the "Childhood Friend Who Always Comes Running [When You Need Him]" title that cannot be easily parsed into English, hence stupid "Stumbling Childhood Friend" translations on like, the wiki article.

Second when Estelle is kidnapped and he runs into the party talking with Alexei at Yormgen. (He leaves during the Shrine of Baction scene to go on ahead, so Sodia can deliver her ultimatum to Yuri without his interference.) He then leaves halfway through Heracles to go ram his ship into it. Third after you save Estelle, Ioder serenely gives Flynn to you like he's some sort of trophy. (I translated this.) And then the fourth time, when he joins permanently, is in Aurnion after the duel, at Sodia's urging. (It was late at night and I didn't translate this.)

So, of course, Flynn is in your party! And because of this, he has some cute things he does that I wanted to relate because I'm a huge loser.

First of all, I was ecstatic to see him have bonding with Repede, because First Strike shafted his relationship with Repede so completely. Repede tags along with him when he walks or has scenes almost as much as he follows Yuri, which is so cute. ♥ Repede has two daddies, goddamnit. Then he has the same after-battle poses with Repede that Yuri does: The simultaneous "Yes! / Woof!" that Rita calls scary, and the "The cry of victory! / Woof, woof woof!" They're cute.

He has a high-five with Estelle, which is adorable and fluffy. "The sign of victory!" "Yes!" They high five. He smiles at her. "I'm glad we won." Then they sparkle. (In my head.) After watching this a few times I realized that their babies would be made of pure sugar.

He also has a secret handshake thing going with Yuri, which is adorable. Every now and then after a battle Flynn will hover near Yuri and hold up his hand, and they'll do this -- fistbump followed by a highfive. Then Yuri's all, "You were really intense back there," admiring, and Flynn agrees, "You too." Dorkyyyy.

Flynn also has a little thing with Raven, where he goes, "Good job, Captain Schwann!" or something like that, and then Raven says, "No, it's Raven," and then Flynn corrects with oblivious fluffiness, "Good job, Captain Raven!" and Raven sighs. Also, if Flynn is in your party when the guys do their "Our weapons are love!" "Justice!" "Sexualitayyyy!" Flynn will follow up with a disapproving, "Raven-san..." (or Captain Schwann. I can't remember. He usually gets more formal and Captain Schwanny when he disapproves of Raven being a creeper.)

If he had after-battle scenes with Rita, Judith, Karol, and Patty, I didn't see them/don't remember them... But Patty does have a special skill for when they're in the party together? "Blond Universe". lollll. Patty is terribly cute, I just don't have many thoughts on her. But I've loved Flynn since the 360 version, so...

Flynn learns "steak" from cooking hamburger "salisbury steak", and "beef stew" from cooking "cream stew". He's also able to do this after only a few tries, and didn't manage a star on either recipe when he learned his new ones. Of course, as we know, he's also pretty terrible at cooking. He seems to like most recipes that involve beef, and likes pork if it's in stew or soup, and he tends to dislike excessively Japanese/fishy recipes, most notably ones that involve squid (like okonomiyaki, sashimi, etc). Usually-vegetarian dog Repede also likes steak, but Flynn and Yuri have no favorite recipes in common, since Flynn is a big ole meat-eater and Yuri is into indulging his sweet tooth.

It is extremely difficult to acquire an outfit for him that I like having him wear. You know, I love having Yuri just chill in his True Knight or Dark Enforcer or Improvisionist costumes; Judith in Into the Sky, Glamorous Maid, Legendary Gambler; Rita in Kitty Cat Waitress and Miska Doctoral Degree and Spotlight Hog... They're just outfits that look great and that I love wearing! They're outfits that these characters really might have been designed with. Flynn -- doesn't really seem to have those... All of the outfits that are easy to get (his spa costume, his beach costume) are not really outfits, they're just... theme costumes. His Boarder Repede outfit is a nice suit, but still just a fussy suit. Why can't he have a nice outfit? sigh...

However, Flynn does have attachments. What are my favorites... He can wear a dog tail (which Karol and Patty can also wear). He can wear Estelle's angel set (wings and halo) (which Yuri and Raven can also wear, but halo-only, no angel wings for them).

Oh, hey.

On New Costume Choices

The attachments that were so singular and rare in the 360 version are now sharable. For instance, Estelle's veil attachment can be worn by Rita (black), Judith and Repede and Yuri (white). Yuri's black hat can be worn by some of the boys, and his "another color" hat can be worn by some of the girls (it's red on Rita).

Judith's hairpins can also be worn by Yuri, in his like, two outfits where he has his hair in a ponytail. It's not as fancy-looking though.

As noted, there are dog ears and a tail for the small children and Flynn; the angel set and devil set can be worn by more people. Towards the end of the game my battle party was Estelle and Flynn as angels, and Yuri and Rita as devils (in their Improvisionist and Miska Doctoral Degree costumes respectively). It was totally hot and they all looked amazing together. XD

There's a woman in Dahngrest who is disappointingly selective about what costumes/attachments she mixes up for you. For instance, Karol gets like eight million versions of his Minion costume (Frog Lunchlady! Frog Girly! Frog Golden Soldier! etc) but for everyone else she's like, "I guess I'll let you wear a ponytail with your beach outfit, Yuri! Here, Judith, have your ponytail on your normal clothes! Leeeet's make it so you can wear the veil and the glasses together, I guess." Why not the dog tail and the dog ears? Why not Yuri's ponytail with his normal outfit?!?

The new bathing suits are awesome. I don't care what anyone says, I love Yuri's Asch hair. Raven looks hot in his. The winter outfits are mostly meh, although Rita's pajamas are cute.

I THINK THAT'S IT.
