Silent Hill Downpour: DAY FIVE

Because it's late at night and we still make good decisions!


Starting from: With our mysterious letter from the orphanage in hand, we head into the movie theater.

We're in the bathroom and picked up a film reel there. The condom dispenser (?) has had some sort of mysterious electrical failure and is sparking.

[sincere]

We're in a theater. It's very dark and quiet, and there's creepy whispering.

So naturally rainfall is exploring more.

[sincere]

The whispering is following us into the ladies' room. So inappropriate.

[sincere]

The bulb is missing from the projector, so we have a queeeest.

[sincere]

The voices won't shut up and rainfall can't find anything cluelike. We have to find a bulb, and there's a door with a padlock on it.

She's been running around with the UV light out but hasn't found any clues yet. She broke down and opened the guide, though.

[sincere]

Looks like we need to get a bulb from the hardware store. But the first store we went into is not. It has lots and lots of mannequins. rainfall didn't make it far in before freaking out and leaving. It was not convincingly enough a hardware store.

She went down into a subway, which is horrifying-looking. Empty dress shops = no, decrepit subways = yes.

[sincere]

And came right back up in front of a Screamer.

Accidentally got too close to the orphanage! Cutscene hijacked!

He knocks on the door and a nun answers the door. He says "Hey I got a letter but I think there's been a mistake" and she's all "Nope we were expecting you! You're the only family we were able to locate"

GOOD SIGNS

[sincere]

Murphy is REALLY UNSETTLED by the grotesque state of the orphanage as she closes the door behind him.


Nun: He died peacefully. He didn't have a lot of personal effects, but they're yours.

Murphy: Was there an earthquake or something? What happened here?

Nun: Look around, enjoy our work, I'm sure you'll find your visit enlightening. And come join me in the morgue when you're ready.

[sincere]

We're trapped in the orphanage now, so orphanage it is.

[sincere]

lol, it must have been an earthquake, there is a huge huge chasm going endlessly down in the middle of the next room that she went into.

[sincere]

...standing in front of a hallway that appears to be having a water-surface effect, or maybe a gas leak or something. At the end of the hallway we have a creepy pantomime of someone being murdered with an axe, then we can get the axe from a -- bodybag, idk.

And then the room explodes FULL OF MANNEQUINS AND SHADOWY LADIES, there's like seven of them.

rainfall fights them all and then runs back and forth for a while, waiting for something to happen. Nothing does. We leave and now there's footsteps leading away. With the axe we can break open the nearby door!

[sincere]

There's a kid we can see behind a locked door with a window. Murphy asks the kid to let him in, but the kid says "Oh, it's you." He's not letting you in. Murphy is the bogeyman, or so the little girl crying in the closet says.

Murphy says, kid. I'm not going to lie to you. Monsters are real. It's not just stories. But I'm not one of them!

"Not yet," says the boy.

There's a rhyme that makes the bogeyman go away. Our new objective is to learn it.

There's been at least two "earthquakes" since we entered the orphanage, either to freak us out or to make small things happen that change the locale a little.

[sincere]

In the chapel now. There's a "rhyme book", Murphy says, behind some bars. But we can't get to it yet, so...

[sincere]

There's some complicated nonsense involving swinging chandeliers, but we break open the room and get the poem... fragment.

Poem Fragment 1:
Poor little Steven Skelter,
Even the chaplain won't forgive you.
"Forever lies!" your pleading cries,
But Suzy knows you felt her.

I have doubts that this poem is going to make the bogeyman go away.

There's some pretty bell music and sobbing noises out in the playground. Oh, also the corpse of an inmate.

[sincere]

...Very creepy female monster approaching down the hallway, scraping knives against the walls. rainfall ran far away and the scraping sound faded. Run run run run turn into a room

turn around and OH MY FUCKING GOD SHE'S THERE

I yelped, I swear to god. XD

[sincere]

There was a little girl behind bars, singing the Itsy Bitsy Spider. She ran away before Murphy could get near her.

We have another hallucination of the Gas Mask Guy in the bathroom, and then Officer Coleridge urging Murphy to find himself or get in touch with his inner child or something. Face the truth--

[sincere]

Hahaha holy shit, the corpse hanging in the playground sometimes turns into a tire swing when your back is turned and then sometimes comes back.

[sincere]

We found a gun and a severed arm. Murphy's only comment is, "THAT'S more like it!"

He's a fan of severed arms. I mean, guns.

[sincere]

A few jumps later and we are ready to call that good. It's surprisingly intense. I don't know if it's the tired or what.

We'll get to it early tomorrow, rainfall will follow the guide religiously, and then we'll switch to something that's only horrible in small, non-scream-at-11-pm-inducing doses.

[rainfall]

I am super-distressed to report that, according to the guide, I could have just run right out of that room.

After you exit, the magical hallway completely vanishes, and if you move the bookcase again there's a fireaxe.

REACH OUT TO THE TRUTH, MURPHY

[sincere]

I thought you might have been able to, but I know you have a hairtrigger KILL THE SEX DOLL response.

Of course, by the time it was the seventh sex doll I was thinking "Yeah, maybe we should just. Go..."

[sincere]

And of course I had no idea that you didn't even need to stop for the AXE.

I swear, this is much scarier than these games usually are. There are usually small moments, and the Hospital location always has me tense from beginning to end, but this game is uncomfortable to play, it's so damned tense all the time and dark and the glitches only make it worse. While we were in the movie theater, the screen kept having some kind of pop that made me jump with white light showing through that sometimes looked like a face.

We spent like an hour on this but it felt like so much, much longer.

It's like, the only enemy I HAVE to murder. I'm trying to run from the others but sfjslkdjf this one.

I think I might have a vengeance thing going on because the basement that introduced them was so awful.

So even in a Silent Hill movie theater people talk too much.
