Apartments!

I'm in Boston. This bed-and-breakfast is so damn cute and I'm totally in love with Coolidge Corner.

Apartment #1
I would've just sold myself on this apartment if not for the catch. It's very spacious -- very tastefully decorated -- the room they're offering me is almost as big as mine back home, carpeted, gorgeous. Three bedrooms, each $585/month with heat and hot water, other utilities not included. Decent kitchen, nice bathroom, brand new coin laundry, nice view...

Only, the two roommates I'd be moving in with over the summer? Yeah, they'll be gone in September, and apparently, it'll be up to me to fill their rooms. They assure me it'll be as easy as showing someone around -- and lord knows I was sold -- but I'm not entirely comfortable with that when I've never even lived in an apartment on my own before. If [livejournal.com profile] phinnia and [livejournal.com profile] tallin could get here and supply a magical funlift for easy transport up and down the two flights of stairs (I could use it myself, moving in would be a pain in the ass) that would be great, but failing that, I'm left to interview strangers.

And you just KNOW my ad is going to say, "Simmons girl looking for second and third for miracle wonder sublet, only video game and anime fans need apply."

Apartment #2
The guy here shows me around, seven flights of stairs after buzzing into his building. This apartment contains very narrow hallways between each room, which is off-putting, but seems standard. The room he wants me to have is the "smallest and cheapest", by which he means is smaller than my college dorm and costs $630/month with only heat and hot water included. It seems cramped but he got a lot of stuff in there, and the kitchen and bathroom are very spacious.

His roommates weren't around, but the girl keeps iguanas and the guy isn't in a lot, and I think there would be a third replacing a sublettor. It seems like they're a bit too party-people for my taste; he described them as spending much of their time hanging around in bars. Hmm. The expense and cramped quarters turned me off here, not to mention boys have cooties.

Apartment #3
The girl I met was very friendly and seemed very happy to see me and eager to please (such as offering to give me June free of charge if I wanted to move in during the month). She was only up three or four flights of stairs. They apparently have excellent landlord-related maintenance, and a kitty. *heart* I think these people may be more my kind of people, but I get the feeling I would rarely leave my bedroom if I moved in here. It too features narrow hallways, and the kitchen was not as nice as I might have liked. But at $525 a month, do I get to complain? Three roommates. And a KITTY.

Neither was my room. This was by far the least attractive of the three I visited today, although there was a rather nice bright "living room". My room was quite small, never possibly housing a queen bed like the other two did (even if the guy in #2 did so by sacrificing his closet) and less than cleanly -- there were fuzzy things all over the floor, masking tape on the windows for apparently no reason, a very old and narrow heater hanging out taking up floor space... But I feel like once I moved in there, I would never leave my room except to cook something to eat. It would be my domain.

So in summary, #1 is my dream apartment if not for the incident where suddenly I'm responsible for filling the other two rooms or the rent falls to me. #2 is probably off the list. #3 isn't nice but seems to have nice folk and that's what matters. I could easily live in #1 and #3 I could make do with, although I hate to make anyone carry furniture up that many stairs and through those narrow hallways... Futon anyone?

Tomorrow I go to see #4, which ironically has a gamer geek and an anime lover moving out, to not see #5, which would have been the apartment where nobody could read, and pay a visit to Simmons. Huzzah! *tired*
