Whining over whining over spoilers

I'm the spoiler queen. I love spoilers. If I have an entire anime in front of me that I won't be able to watch for another three whole days because my friends don't have time, I will spoil myself stupid so I can know what I'm missing.

The Harry Potter book is different, and a lot of whining has come up about people not wanting to be spoiled, and a lot of whining about people who don't want to be spoiled.

Yesterday on my friends' list many people politely asked for spoilers to be LJ-cut and marked. This is not an unreasonable request. It is not difficult to do. It only requires common consideration and the ability to type, which you presumably have anyway. Today many people are complaining that this was apparently too difficult for enough people that they are now MAJORLY spoiled for the end of the book.

It's not that hard. [livejournal.com profile] terrykun has been boiling over to talk to me about the plot twists all last night. He's waiting patiently though. We're not talking about people who willingly click on spoiler-warninged LJ cuts or people who waltz into chatrooms called "Harry Potter Spoilers For People Who Don't Like Reading". We're talking about people too inconsiderate to think about the 60 people on their friends list who are still reading.

So when I read people whining about the people 'whining' about spoilers? There's an argument about it on one of my communities as we speak. This whining is absurd. You can't tell people it's THEIR OWN FAULT for having lives and not having finished the book in 16 hours. You can't tell them it's THEIR OWN FAULT for going online when they can still be spoiled. It's like trying to blame someone for not living in a tree for three days if you live with someone who reads faster and they spoil something for you. It doesn't work that way.

If this was a month after the book came out, okay. It's unfortunate that some people still haven't read it, but you can't stop the spoilers. But 24 hours after the book's release, you can chokehold any opinion you can't censor for the people who willingly click on it.

...Metawhining?

I have a friend who fangirled to me, and said something about chapter two (dropping names and fangirling about a name) that pretty much spoiled it to me. And I know it's just the second chapter, geez, Alex is fucking petty, but when you've said you have to wait 'til September to read the book, it's pretty inconsiderate.

Thankfully, everyone on my LJ and GJ friends list has been great with LJ-cuts. (And you with your lurky silence, of course. XD)

Sorry to spam you, but I just agree that some people need to learn when to shut the fuck up -- whether they are going to spoil you or whether they are mad at you for not having read. *clings to Kay~*

Chris read it yesterday (because the bastard can download books legally due to some loophole in copyright restriction and he reads at about 700 WPM) and my copy won't be here until next week. Now I /asked/ him about a certain spoiler mostly because I'd heard rumors about something happening at the end before the book was even released, and he told me, but I ASKED about it. It doesn't really spoil it for me personally, but I can totally understand how it would ruin it for others. Anyone who doesn't respect that is just lame.
Someone needs to box up the metawhiners and put them in a big field behind barbed wire and give them nothing to do - oh wait! that wouldn't really make much difference.
And I am EVEN MORE SCARED of the next book. How much you want to bet there WILL be some idiot who actually shoots someone for ruining book seven?

I will bet two bags of Doritos and a llama.

[identity profile] phinnia.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)

Why do you not get to read until then? SHOCK.

And I really hate that mentality -- you found out because of me but even though you've made it clear you want me to keep it to myself, but it's your fault for being so whiny about it. :P

HI! I've spoiled myself now the proper way -- by reading them.

Warning: Do not see "Harry Potter" and "spoilers" on my next post and respond to it to tell me you ignored it, lest you catch sight of the under-LJ-tag. ^_~
