KHFA survey

Everyone on my flist who cares about Kingdom Hearts has already seen this because I spammed it on like five communities, but in case you haven't seen it.


libekory and I are setting up a fanfic archive for Kingdom Hearts -- it will be pretty cool. Categories, character selection that doesn't suck, a review system, an alert system, a rating system, even the ability to hold challenges and select "editor's picks" (so you know which fics shine among the masses).

But what kind of a category system do we want? (ladycrysiana - you're a better librarian than me, help!)

We have two major options: sorting by timeline or sorting by pairing.

In the event of a pairing system, the top level of categories might read--
General Fiction
Het Pairings
Slash Pairings
Femslash Pairings
Mixed Pairings

In the event of a timeline system, the top level of categories might read--
Before Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts
Before KH: Chain of Memories
KH: Chain of Memories
Before: Kingdom Hearts II
Kingdom Hearts II
After Kingdom Hearts II
Alternate Timeline

(We can also offer categories within categories -- if we do a timeline system, you can still say that you want pairings underneath that, as in, you can click on "Post-Kingdom Hearts II" fanfics and still enter the "General" category from there, or however you like it. We know a lot of people get fussy to find slash in their het, or prefer genfic, etc, and want to avoid that.)

As I am not on any KH community (gasp!) I will give me two cents here.

1. I prefer the type of story sorting over the timeline sorting.

2. Could you add more types of categories? I'm talking about things like comedy, horror, action, tragedy, etc. They could go either under the gen label or on their own.

3. Is it possible to search by individual character instead of pairing?

Have NO fear. When you upload a fic, you will have to define the following rigorous categories -- ALL from a drop-down menu, so you can search them easily:

Category (and sub-category) to sort into
Characters involved
Genre of fic (comedy, drama, PWP, etc)
Warnings on fic (violence, original character, graphic sex, bondage)
Rating of fic
Spoilers (KH, KH: CoM, KH2)

Thank you for your vote, it's been noted. ^^ And yes, as a matter of fact, right now it's ONLY possible to search for individuals and not pairings... Ehe.

Well, given how people in fandom seem to look for fic in general I would say that the organization according to subject matter. I mean, time period could be one of the other qualifiers for it, but most people looking for fic are looking for specific characters or pairings. (I also didn't see this around because I, uh, rarely join comms.)

Excellent points. I'm leaning towards type of pairing myself now -- most people I know who have definitive preferences want to see things based on pairings, IE, "I prefer genfic," or, "I dislike yaoi."

You will be able to search for specific characters, although at the moment, not pairings. (Unless we make them subcategories, which I am immensely disinclined to do.)

I prefer the timeline sorting, but that might just be because I've not finished CoM or acquired KH2. But then, I'm also the type of reader who'd rather get into a fic about my favorites. So... there's also that. */unhelpful*

Maleficent made me squeal like a little girl with a crush in KH2. You'll love it when you have a chance to get it. ♥

I think what we might do is arrange a new category so you can search for fics that have spoilers only for KH, which will weed out fics that have spoilers for KH2 or CoM.

I am usually most interested in romance rather than when it takes place, but I like the idea of having it be sorted by timeline and then pairing type.

That's really cool that you're setting up your own fanfic archive. It's really hard sifting through all the crap on FF.net to find the good stuff. I've resorted to LJ for my fanfiction now.

I hope you'll post the link when you're done.
