NaNoWriMo Update
Yes! I have finally managed to give my villain enough of a personality that he's in my head and alive! Jillia is so unspeakably thrilled to be able to work on NaNoWriMo stuff that she's abducted him, which may lead to problems later on, when he has to be a villain and not her tea party friend.
So, he has a personality and lives in my head now, which is wonderful and bodes well for the story. On the other hand, he wants to be named Benedict.
Basic background: Jillia's grandmother Katrinka is among the strongest Gypsy witches of the generation, if she is not the strongest. Katrinka had three children: Yelena, Sergei, and Leonsia. Gypsy magic is passed through females only, but both of Katrinka's daughters didn't like magic (or, technically, Katrinka) and avoided it (and her) scrupulously. On the other hand, Katrinka's son Sergei turned out, at about puberty, to be a freak of nature -- a Romani male with magic. Typically this happens once every dozen or so generations; often these males are exiled or killed before their powers surface. But Sergei liked magic, and liked his mother, so he went into hiding to avoid having to force her to do something about him. So now, about 48 or so and looking no older than 30, Sergei wanders the world. Nobody in his family ever knows where he is, although he keeps in touch with Katrinka.
Jillia is Yelena's oldest, and she has the witch blood that skipped her mother, although it's untrained. One day Sergei shows up on her doorstep and tells her that a Group Of Gypsy-Hating Nazi-Types are on his trail and he needs her help to throw them off a bit. This proceeds to not work. They wind up in Chicago with Jillia's brother Sasha (mourning his recent breakup with his boyfriend of four years) and Theo (an adoptee of Sasha's whose family consists of, more or less, people who are either dead or hate him. sometimes both) and a couple of other people who are not nearly as important to the story.
NOT!Benedict is the villain boss hunting Sergei. He is always urbane and genteel, very convincing when he lies, and strikes everybody as being a great guy. He is also startlingly insanely passionately devoted to his cause, and really hates the Rom, but of course is quite brilliant when it comes to hiding this. Fun to be around and clever and interesting -- who could guess this man is psychotic? I'm pretty sure he and Jillia flirt with each other by primary means of communication.
I'm not sure what group I'm dealing with here, though. I need to think of one. And November is... only in a couple of days. Huh. Then Neesama comes out to visit. ^^ We should look at apartments while she's here.
I want to write Ginji/Yukihiko luv. Why? Because I feel like it. O_o
