Page from a non-existent FAQ: Zexion

ZEXION
Recommended level: 30+
Health: 4.5 bars
Abilities: Bookification, Teleport: Book Hell, Teleport: Meteor Hell
Skills you'll want: Scan, Aerial Recovery, Slide Dash, aerial attack abilities
Skills you won't want: combo plus abilities (get straight to the finisher)

If this were a more straight-forward fight, it would be over in seconds. Zexion takes damage like a truck to the face: with a decent keyblade and normal skills you can get down a full lifebar in about twenty seconds, and he doesn't have much in the way of health. Unfortunately, the Cloaked Schemer doesn't care to fight you face-to-face, so you'll have to chip away at his health as best you can in-between flailing around.

The first stage of this fight takes place on a fragment of Destiny Islands. In this phase you will not be attacked. Zexion will try and stay far away from you, dodging a lot -- this is why Slide Dash is so useful, it'll help close that distance. He will glow green and become briefly unhittable, which is your signal that he's about to turn one of your friends into a book. He can do this very fast, although sometimes he'll take his time. You can restore Donald and Goofy if they get bookified by attacking the book until it dies, but we find that this is only good as a delaying tactic. Eventually, whether or not you save Donald and Goofy, Zexion will get tired of bookifying you one at a time and will turn all three of you into books and transport you to Book Hell. It's probably better to spend your time hitting him as hard and as fast as you can.

Don't use drives in this fight! For one thing, if Donald or Goofy is a book, you can't drive with them. For another thing, if you get anti-formed, you're dead, because in Book Hell you can't attack and you won't be able to use triangle commands and you won't be able to pick up items and you won't have any companions. For a third thing, you'll probably just be wasting it, because you'll never get to hit him for long enough for it to be of any value. But if you do drive, make it Valor, because Wisdom form is especially useless -- magic doesn't seem to do any damage to Zexion.

The second stage of this fight takes place in Book Hell, which I have sometimes heard called the World of Shadows, but Book Hell is much more appropriate. You will be in a dark vortex surrounded by floating books, with a triangle command to investigate them and a customized command menu that changes every time you hit triangle. One of the books, usually near Sora, will glitter and occasionally be surrounded by a red glow -- Zexion is hiding in this book!

The most important thing to note here is that your friends do not have this same problem with identifying the correct book that you do, nor do they have problems attacking. Watch them to see which book they're attacking if the book isn't glowing, and lock on to that book. Sometimes the books will form a circle, and Zexion's will be in the center. The books will fling pages at you to knock you into the air and you'll want to have Aerial Recovery to avoid getting tossed around for twenty seconds; they'll also turn blue and smack you. The circular formation seems to turn into a vortex, and if you see the books forming a grid, look out, it will rush at you.

The key to escaping Book Hell is to be fast with menus.

If you read Japanese really fluently, at an extremely fast reading level: Congratulations! You're probably in much better luck than we are. Hit triangle and look for "torimodosu" (とりもどす) or "nukedasu" (ぬけだす) on every menu page. Those are the two commands (of possibly three?) that have a chance to give you back the attack option. "Uchikesu" (うちけす) will banish every book on the plane that isn't Zexion's.

If you don't read Japanese or if you aren't that good: Hit triangle like crazy and use every available command in the menu until you get the attack option. Only some of them will be lit up on each page, sometimes only one. They give you different effects, some generating health and drive balls, others munny. One command will banish all the non-Zexion books, and the one you should pray for will give you your familiar menu.

Once the Zexion book is at low health, you will have a triangle option to Dispel your surroundings, and then you will find yourself back on the fragment of Destiny Islands. Important to note that your friends can not kill the book -- they can damage it, but the killing blow has to be Sora.

Rinse and repeat. You'll probably see Book Hell two or three times before you get him to midway on his second-to-last life bar and wind up getting bookified and sent somewhere new. Welcome to Meteor Hell.

For preparation, when you're staring his second-to-last life bar, make sure you are at full MP. The next part of this fight is brutal, and if you aren't quick and can't use a cure, you will probably die. If you need to buy time to recover MP, try to delay Zexion by freeing your friends from their books.

In Meteor Hell, you are in a dark space with three beams of light: two red, and one blue. The blue one moves around in an unpredictable pattern, very fast at first, and slowing down. Zexion's book is in the blue light. One strategy is to try to stand in the middle of the three pillars, where you can see at least the edges of all three. As the light show starts to slow down, one of the three spotlights will be outlined in white. Run to this one as fast as you can, because a barrier will go up around it shortly, and if you are caught outside the barrier, you will be hit by a devastatingly intense rain of meteors. If you manage to get inside the barrier in time, you have a few free moments to bash Zexion's book.

Warning: This is something you'll just have to master. Increased level doesn't help much if you fail Meteor Hell. We fought him first at level 30 and then again at 40 and Meteor Hell was still instant death even with our far higher health.

If you survive Meteor Hell, you will be dumped back in Book Hell. Zexion will be panicky and send out a multi-colored burst of power in four directions that will hit you for a lot of damage and will be repeated frequently. Try to use Aerial Recovery to get out of the blasts and then stay out of the way. He'll also surround himself with a blue hurricane of other books if you get too close, which will hit you frequently; just try to press the attack as fast as you can, before he whips out his annoying attacks and dispel the book.

Burn him down as fast as you can when he's on the sandy island. This is your one and only opportunity to do real damage to the Nobody himself. For winning this fight Sora gets a new item slot, Donald gets an HP bonus, and Goofy learns the skill Crisis Half (which halves his damage taken while he's in critical health). You also receive the synth recipe for Kage no Genei, "Shadow's Illusion".

Our settings: Hi-potions on everyone. Donald is set to support (ソラにまかせろ), and Goofy is set to attack with Sora (いっしょにたたかえ).

Questions: Is the meteor storm a certain element that can be defended against? Does reflect work on the meteors?
