Thoughts on a completed Re:CoM game and FM+ OXIII battles

Spoooooilers.

Re: Chain of Memories

1) Everyone in this game is made of awesome. Every. Single. Person. Except MAYBE Jiminy, aka, the only member of our party who thinks about anything.

2) Riku's game is almost pitifully easy. Li-san blitzed through it in like two nights and only died on two bosses (Replica, last fight, and Ansem). It felt like a little omake game after Sora's game. Nice!

3) Nomura has taken every possible fan argument that Axel didn't do it for Roxas and effectively destroyed it. Then he packaged this with a short story about how they were good friends before Castle Oblivion ever happened. If he could draw doujinshi, I'm pretty sure he would.

(His line "In the name of the Organization, I'll destroy you!" was originally followed by Marluxia sputtering and them battling. This led some fans to think that Axel wasn't being ironic, and actually was loyal. In Re:CoM this scene was fixed so that Marluxia observes that a statement like that doesn't suit Axel, and Axel says, "Yeah, I know, but I wanted to try saying it." He's adorable, but no, not particularly loyal.

3) Speaking of, the added scenes in Sora's and Riku's ending sequences were amazing. There was a Roxas scene in each -- he's "plainclothes" but clearly Nobody edition at the time. In Sora's ending he shoulders past Hayner-tachi, pauses, and starts to turn... And in Riku's ending Axel appears, slides between him and the kids, talks avidly. They have ice cream on top of the station tower and Axel is clearly not prepared for the experience.

In Riku's ending, he and the King are walking through the canyon in Hollow Bastion, and Riku staggers and falls to his knees, clutching his chest. Mickey hovers over him worriedly, but Riku brushes him off, stands, smiles, and goes back to walking. I will bet anything that this is the moment when Namine puts a Sora-shaped hole in his memory.

Final Mix +

1) Vexen's Absent Silhouette battle is absurdly easy. We beat him on the first try by accident. We didn't even make preparations, we just wanted to see what kind of fight he'd put up. (His cackling is a distant third to Lexaeus and Larxene's laughter, FYI.)

2) Much like Lexaeus himself, Lexaeus's Absent Silhouette battle is extremely scary-looking, but it is actually tasty and fun like a marshmallow. He has some of the best, and most painful-looking cinematics.

Like the time when he grabs Sora by the throat and hurls him bodily across the arena to crash painfully and upside-down into a pillar, quickly followed up by a weapon attack. Or the time when he hits Sora so hard the poor kid bounces off the arena floor and into the air, and Lexaeus follows him and slams his axe-sword into his spine. Sora is a sturdy kid, man, I'm telling you.

3) Also much like Larxene herself, Larxene's battle is absolutely void of strategy and comprised almost entirely of chaos and being way too fast. She has a great evil laugh, but Lexaeus wins for sheer surprise value.

4) Marluxia is a bitch. At the beginning of the battle there's a cutscene where he warps behind Sora and whispers something in his ear, and then a counter appears over Sora's head. If Marluxia hits you 61 times, you just fall over and die. His attacks don't really do any damage (except for one, which does a LOT of sustained damage right when you've gotten used to ignoring your health) but it's so difficult. We're working on it.

But my question is, what did he say? [livejournal.com profile] madfnorder suggests, "There's a yaoi doujinshi of you and Riku on its way to Kairi's mailbox... right now."

5) I wasn't crazy about Axel's Japanese seiyuu, but I've gotten used to it. Similarly, I hated Roxas's Japanese seiyuu, but this is only because I'd only heard him in Twilight Town, where he sounds like a husky girl trying to sound like a boy. Actually, though, this is just Twilight Town, and when he's being a Nobody, he actually sounds like a boy on his own merits. I like his voice too.

...besides, any voice-acting on these scenes is better than none.

Xigbar sounds waaaay younger than I thought he would, but it still suits him very well, I think. Xaldin and Xemnas probably are the weirdest transition. I'm used to both of them sounding kinda hot, and here they sound... kinda scary. But I wanna listen to the Hollow Bastion scenes. Maaya Sakamoto. ♥ I'm curious to know what they all sound like in Japanese.

Lexaeus and marshmallow in the same line of dialogue.... I don't know what's what anymore.

"In the name of the Organization, I'll destroy you!"

And great... just GREAT... now all I can picture is Axel superimposed over Sailor Moon.

Well, so long as Lexaeus doesn't look like a bear wearing a marshmallow...

Axel is Rei, not Usagi. Sora can be Usagi. They can fight over Riku! *cough*
