Marluxia is a BASTARD
Marluxia finally dead. We were exhausted two hours ago, but have surfed this far on sheer triumph.
005. =MARLUXIA=
Location: The Beast's Room in the Beast's Castle, on your second visit
Recommended level: 70+
Health: omgwtf barslol didn't count
Abilities: Inadvisable Lunge, Teleport Pingpong, Cancerous Circles of Death, Thorny Embrace, Buzzsaw, Stalk Reaper
Skills you'll want: Leaf Veil, Aerial Dodge, Glide, skills for longer combos/more damaging combos and finishers
Elemental attributes: Takes 0.5x damage from fire/ice/thunder/dark, 1x from no-type and physical
At the beginning of this fight, an unstoppable cinematic begins where Marluxia warps behind Sora and whispers something in his ear. A number, equal to Sora's level, appears above his head. The number goes down by one for every hit Marluxia lands -- to compensate for doing ZERO damage -- and if it reaches zero, Sora just dies. Level is extremely important in this fight, although there is one attack where you can store up "hit points" if you're patient.
The first thing you should be doing, even before the cinematic ends, is hammering the jump button, because the fight opens with Marluxia landing a combo on you unless you jump VERY quickly to avoid and glide past him. Don't worry, if you fail to clear this; you can get those hit points back, as mentioned above.
The attack in question is Inadvisable Lunge. Marluxia will slide across the stage, swiping his scythe at nothing, if you're good -- one important tactic in this fight is to stay away from him a lot unless you see an opening, so try gliding in circles around the outside of the arena. He's not very fast unless he's trying to hit you, he just stalks around menacingly and occasionally teleports to a strategic location. At the end of Inadvisable Lunge, which is about five hits long; if you are caught by the attack, the last hit will send you flying, but if you're watching from afar, there's an opportunity here where his scythe is resting against the ground. He remains in this pose for several seconds, and if you get close enough to him, you can use the reaction command Rob Count. This will replenish some (around 10) of your count. You CAN exceed your starting count this way.
Sometimes you will wind up with a different reaction command, Air Trample. In this attack, you don't gain hit points but you do do substantial damage to Marluxia. Other than Air Trample, which is unpredictable at best, your best bet with damaging him here is to catch him while he's walking, or after a combo. Beware though: Marluxia doesn't like too many combos, and in the third one he will teleport out and begin playing Teleport Pingpong with Sora, where he knocks him further and further up in the air. Escape this attack by Aerial Dodging right when he teleports next to you. The timing must be precise, or he'll still smack you in the face.
When Marluxia is down to 3/4ths of his health, he will begin merciless spamming of the Cancerous Circles of Death. He will be undamageable for the beginning of this attack, and stand in the center of the arena. Three dark circles will appear on the ground, taking up most of the arena. Do NOT stand on them!! These are one of the only two sources of real physical damage in this fight, and by this point you can become so involved in not getting hit that you don't think about your health bar. They do a lot of damage -- landing on it twice can take you out of the fight. (They don't take away points from your health points.)
Land quickly in the light spots, and then take a running jump! Glide and Aerial Dodge are your best friends. Donald and Goofy will be useless for this entire stage of the fight -- they're not smart enough to avoid the malevolent simmering darkness. Usually at the start of each cancerous circle summon, Marluxia will also afflict you with Thorny Embrace, a tangle of vines surrounding you that will steadily deplete your health. This MUST be glided or aerial dodged out of. He will periodically re-inflict this on you while the cancer is present. After a short while, the cancer will vanish, and Marluxia will attempt Teleport Pingpong on you.
Now, after the circles are fully-grown, Marluxia will dart at you and begin attacking you. It's hard to not get hit by his first lunge, unless you just dodge. But after this, try to stay in a clear spot on the floor with him and combo him hard. One tip, which you should keep in mind, is to cast Thunder on him twice, to get him in the air, and then hit him. Warning: Casting Thunder on him three or four times won't help you. If you cast three times, he'll be recovering already by the time you try to hit him, and you won't be able to combo him; if you cast four times, he'll just go straight into Teleport Pingpong.
There is very very little time to hit him, usually only about ten seconds (mostly him hitting you) before he teleports to the center again and begins the cycle anew.
Marluxia will spam Cancerous Circles of Death until he is at half health. This is the hard part of the fight, congratulations if you get past it.
The third part of the fight begins with a Buzzsaw; Marluxia will go into the ground and spin his scythe rapidly, zipping around the arena after you. The best method here is to glide over him, wait for him to pass under you, then land quickly and glide again. If you wait too long, your glide will get too low, and he'll be able to hit you and knock you out of the air.
Take a breather, this part of the fight is much less painful than the Cancerous Circles part. He will often go into Inadvisable Lunge, usually between every attack, giving you plenty of time to work your hit points back up to safe levels if you need. Remember the Thunder trick? Thunder him twice, then aerial dodge in to hit? Do that a lot.
Occasionally Marluxia will attempt to Buzzsaw you again, but as often he'll launch into Stalk Reaper, a lovely creepy attack which begins with him turning the entire arena shadowed and littered with rose petals. Then Marluxia will rise up from behind you and hover over you like a limp mannequin, just sort of following you around eerily while you run or glide. On the ground, dark circles will form and release blasts of dark power in thin columns -- if these hit you, you will not only take physical damage, but you will lose a hit point. When he's done stalking you, Marluxia will pause (giving you several moments to get a distance from him) and then throw his scythe after you. It will chase you around the arena, and try to be faster than it -- if you're caught, it will easily take away those hit points you just got from Inadvisable Lunge.
In Stalk Reaper, the best we managed was to get hit only once. Although the scythe only caught us one time, those damn pillars of darkness get really hard to avoid towards the end. The strategy here is to glide semi- erratically, landing frequently to maintain height, and get the hell away from Marluxia before he throws his scythe at you. Then he'll land and Inadvisable Lunge at you again, and you can throw the scythe at HIM.
When you win, give yourself a pat on the back. You totally deserve it. I know we did by the time we finally got him. For winning, you get the synth recipe Unwithered Flower, Sora gets a Drive Gauge bonus (!!), and Donald and Goofy get HP bonuses. You'll also get a Lost Phantom synth item.
