On the tagging of music

So I'm curious. Do we not live in an age of tagging? Do we not tag everything, from our goals to our journal entries to our finances? I know that Last.fm and other similar web interfaces have brought the idea of tagging to music, but what I want to know is... Why is that only on the web? Wouldn't it be awesome to have a media player that did that?

I would happily donate my money to a media player that will:
  • Allow me to tag my music

  • Put multiple tags on each MP3

  • Sort and filter by tags (way better than playlists, imho)

  • Work with my iPod and maybe ripmy iTunes downloaded music

I'd like to think this would be a popular idea, so I can't imagine why it's not out there already. Is that really hard? It seems like it wouldn't be that big a deal compared to the really wacky media player interfaces I've seen.

I would kill to be able to tag my music. I hate making playlists. >.> I know someone that works for the Zune team. I should ask him about this and demand changes.

You should! It seems so natural to me. :\ Maybe it just betrays my bloggishness. XD

Total word!

They'll probably only sit up and pay attention when websites that use tagging become exponentially more popular than non-tagged websites. It takes a while for the suits to catch on, it's all a numbers game.

I hope so. :x Because there's a reason I don't use any of the current big media players. None of them give me what I want. So I just throw everything into Winamp and let it play whatever.

That is if you're using iTunes, which judging by that last comment you are, then you're already covered.

Not sure if it works one an iPod though.

Also, you can probably use the "Grouping" feature in iTunes to do this too.
