Match.com is made of... scary

Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] melanthe_v. :\

I keep seeing these Match.com commercials on TV, all featuring eerie, utterly inoffensive couples. Blonde people are destined to be with other blonde people. Brunettes are destined to be with other brunettes. Asian people are destined to be with other Asians with the exact same features. They all seem to shop at the same stores.

Besides finding this more than a little creepy eugenics reminiscent, I also keep thinking of this one commercial that I saw one time featuring a guy reading a Penthouse magazine. After a couple of seconds, he sighs and says, "Nope. Still gay." The ad claims that millions of people get rejected from dating sites for reasons like this, but our service likes you just as you are~

That commercial was awesome, and way less creepy. :\

ETA: Aha!

Yeah that commercial was awesome. "3 I like it a lot. I also agree with you about the creepy eugenics-ness of the commercial. I think it's tapping into the desire people have to find someone they clique with.

Yeah, an unfortunate tendency, which results in really. really creepy commercials. :\

Yeah, I do really enjoy that commercial, but I seriously only saw it once! Mystery.

I've seen it maybe three times, and there is another couple by that site that I've seen that were on the same general theme, but not as clever.

Oh thank god it's not just me with match.com. I realize that interracial couples on a commercial would cause a big to-do (unfortunately), but it was the two blonds that threw me for a loop. All the couples look so... similar.

Yeah, it's not the fact that there aren't more gay couples or mixed couples, but... the fact that every one of the couples on their commercials look like they could be twins. These people aren't just ethnically similar, they are possibly biologically related. :\

I just saw the youtube video. The comments are amazing. "eHarmony can't be homophobic, they're a niche market!" Apparently eHarmony is also a far-right Christian dating service. ....Creeeeeepy, you'd think they'd, y'know, say something about that in the commercials for those of us who a Christian dating service aren't good for.

I know your post was about Match.com but I wanted to say.

I like the Penthouse: Gay man commercial too. Now, Dr. Phil is getting involved with match.com. Have you seen his commercial...geez.
