Cid+Kairi: "Lady Friends"

Kairi was impressed despite herself at the collection of spears, harpoons, naginata, and various similar weapons that lined the walls of Cid's basement. She made a slow turn, leaning back on her heels as she took them all in with a fascinated sweep.

They'd come on Restoration Committee business -- a strange measuring device of Merlin's creation, which Cid had used once (under duress) and then tossed into a corner and hid under a tarp, because it 'gave him the screaming willies' -- but the blond man had to stop and glance over his shoulder at her. "You like 'em, huh?" Cid said, bracing his hands on his hips, and nodded his approval. "I don't fight with them anymore, but I was in the Radiant Garden militia back in the day, you know. Girls like Sylph here were standard-issue."

"Sylph?" Kairi echoed, peering at the spear he was caressing fondly. It read XF 4700-B-18 engraved on the metal grip. "Have you named them?"

"Yeah, sure." He nodded at the next spear in the line-up. "That one's Valefor, and Asura..."

Kairi had never understood the tendency to anthropomorphize objects, giving them names and genders and personalities; there were more than enough anthropomorphic things already in the multiverse. "Any reason why?" she asked, polite as she could manage about it.

Cid shrugged. "Shows you care about 'em," he said. "If a spear's going to save your life, you ought to treat it well."

She pointed out, reasonable, "I don't think the spear cares. And -- why girl's names?"

"Oh, right," the pilot said dryly. "'cuz carrying around a giant hunk of metal named Pumpkinhead is better?"

As far as she knew, Sora hadn't named his keyblade's forms himself, but that was one of those facets of keyblade-wielding that she didn't fully understand, as a spectator. She had to concede the point anyway.

Although, I'm still curious as to why they're all female. Spears seemed -- well, not especially evocative of feminity.

Cid tilted his head back, reaching up to take the cigarette from his mouth. "It was tradition," he said. "In the militia. We all named our weapons -- mostly after girlfriends, wives, daughters. My brothers and I were too good to do what everyone else did, so we promised to name all of our spears after women in mythology." He rubbed his nose a little, added, "Radiant Garden had a pretty rich culture that way, there was a lot to choose from."

Kairi closed her mouth, almost repenetant. Brothers? No doubt dead for years and years, but she still felt bad having brought it up. She caught a glimpse of a familiar shape in the corner, and changed the topic promptly.

"What about the flamethrower?" she asked, teasing with a grin. "Does it have a name too?"

"Sure does," Cid said, smirking back at her. He moved over to pat it.

"This baby's Shera."

"The woman who owns the laundromat?" Kairi asked, surprised.

"Maybe," Cid said, losing his smirk slightly. Almost belligerent, he added, "She makes an okay tea."

Kairi tried not to smile too much.
