Arguing isn't even fun when it's this painful.
Me: The way I see it, there are two overarching kinds of romantic fanfic -- the common, and the unique. The common are canon pairings or believable canon pairings; the unique are noncanon experimental pairings. I like both stories! The common romances are probably why I'm trolling for fanfiction, and the unique romances are certainly interesting for a change of pace, but... If people write unique stories so often that they become common, thus making it the fan "standard" to break up a canon pairing or create really unlikely pairings, I find it obnoxious.
Jason 3.0: That makes me think of the [Inuyasha fandom] Sesshoumaru/Rin trend... But I guess I'm guilty of being "overunique" too; my story has that pairing.
Me: I don't think that's enough of a stretch to count as unique -- if Sesshoumaru is going to go for any female, as far as I've seen, I think Rin when she grows up is most likely. I think it's close enough to possible that it falls into the category of 'frequent is okay because it's believable'.
Jason 3.0: ...Well *I* like to think my work is unique.
Me: *confused, attempting to make a joke out of it* You being sane isn't the reason why your work is unique. For example, you writing pro-Kikyou stories isn't unique because you're the only person in the fandom who doesn't hate her -- although it may seem like it some days.
Jason 3.0: Oh no! I don't mean I'm the only non-Kikyou hater. I mean for example, [expands upon his plot ideas here which actually involve plot, and are thus rare on ffnet].
Me: ...that has nothing to do with what I was talking about.
Really annoying ten minute argument continues from there, mostly about what we're misunderstanding. Stay within the set definitions, damnit! It's not fun arguing if we can't even agree about what we're arguing on! Why are the newer models of Jason inferior? The formula needs perfecting. Maybe they just need to start making female Jasons? I wonder if that would make them more comprehensible!
