I'm the spoiler queen. I love spoilers. If I have an entire anime in front of me that I won't be able to watch for another three whole days because my friends don't have time, I will spoil myself stupid so I can know what I'm missing.

The Harry Potter book is different, and a lot of whining has come up about people not wanting to be spoiled, and a lot of whining about people who don't want to be spoiled.

Yesterday on my friends' list many people politely asked for spoilers to be LJ-cut and marked. This is not an unreasonable request. It is not difficult to do. It only requires common consideration and the ability to type, which you presumably have anyway. Today many people are complaining that this was apparently too difficult for enough people that they are now MAJORLY spoiled for the end of the book.

It's not that hard. [livejournal.com profile] terrykun has been boiling over to talk to me about the plot twists all last night. He's waiting patiently though. We're not talking about people who willingly click on spoiler-warninged LJ cuts or people who waltz into chatrooms called "Harry Potter Spoilers For People Who Don't Like Reading". We're talking about people too inconsiderate to think about the 60 people on their friends list who are still reading.

So when I read people whining about the people 'whining' about spoilers? There's an argument about it on one of my communities as we speak. This whining is absurd. You can't tell people it's THEIR OWN FAULT for having lives and not having finished the book in 16 hours. You can't tell them it's THEIR OWN FAULT for going online when they can still be spoiled. It's like trying to blame someone for not living in a tree for three days if you live with someone who reads faster and they spoil something for you. It doesn't work that way.

If this was a month after the book came out, okay. It's unfortunate that some people still haven't read it, but you can't stop the spoilers. But 24 hours after the book's release, you can chokehold any opinion you can't censor for the people who willingly click on it.
