Nitpicking video games!! The World Ends With You (part 2)
This game is full of mindfuckery and goodness. And total creepsauce. Really the moment I realized this was a game full of dead people, around Day 5 of Shiki's Game, it became pretty awesome. The dialogue is simply fantastic, except for like, Beat's "slang". Whatever, we've well established he's an idiot.
I defeated the entire last few days of the game on Easy mode and with the level meter cranked all the way up because Normal mode was killing me (fucking Minamimoto) but the battle system itself was much easier to use, especially in Joshua's chapter -- I found his number system much easier than Shiki's card system for some reason. It got to the point where I didn't mind the fact that half the time in boss battles, only one of your two characters is useful, so you can be forced to play the other person. I got pretty decent at multitasking it.
Anyway, this story is about Neku, and I love his character evolution. It's subtle, and each person helps him along, and I loved watching that. Shiki taught him to not disregard others, and Joshua taught him to trust, and Beat taught him how to lead. I was expecting a much more simplistic evolution, but it really turned out beautiful.
The ending was epic. And I love that, in the end, despite everything Joshua did, Neku still trusted him, and still was willing to forgive him, and still considered him a friend even though no one has more reason to hate Joshua than Neku, and Joshua did not exactly go to great lengths to make himself likable at any point, or even ask for forgiveness ever.
Shiki: Her jealousy, and her subsequent decision not to be jealous anymore, was awesome.I totally ship her and Eri. She's kind of cute from what you can see of her in the end credits, too.
Joshua: Incredibly gay and totally fascinating. It's not that I didn't expect his plot twists half of the time, but his approach just makes everything so much more interesting. Plus, I love that Neku has taught him things, even though you'd think it wouldn't be possible. But he made the right choice in the end -- Neku made him change his mind.
Beat-Rhyme: Why wasn't there more of the little Rhyme Noise?! Anyway I still think they were kinda shippy. But I really enjoyed them and their plot and all their little revelations.
How did all of these dead kids just come back to their parents? I want to know.
Mr. H: Yaaaay, Neku's fanboy idol gets out clean! I really like him, but I suspect I'll have to find the secret reports to know what he was really all about, huh?
Reapers: Minamimoto and Konishi were very, very interesting, even if Minamimoto was infuriating. Kitaniji turned out to be very interesting as well. Of course Kariya and Uzuki were cool. Reeeally have no use for food-analogy-guy, except for the quote, "The proof is in the pudding. The pudding... of their doom." Awesome.
Music: Still painful overall, but much less painful than I thought. Once "Calling" and "Deja Vu" weren't like the only tracks they played, it got better. I think I hate those tracks.
Spoiler spoiler spoiler: The best line in the game is contained below, and refers to something that may or may not have happened, thanks to Joshua's tricksiness.
Joshua: Morning, sunshine.
Neku: Har har. You're killing me, Josh. Oh wait.
That was when I knew this game was truly awesome.
Now I'm off to get the Secret Reports and Another Day.
