Rita stared at her friend with accusing eyes. "What do you mean you couldn't go through with it?!"
The other girl smiled. "I love Yuri," she said simply. "He changed my life. I'll never forget that. And he will always... have a special place in my heart."
"Estelle." Rita kept her voice reasonable and calm. "Those are all great reasons to marry him."
Estelle shook her head. "He did ask me to marry him, but I think -- he was only trying to make me happy. And there are... other things that would make us both happier."
The fourth time it happened he was ready for it. It was just what she did; they settled down and Judith vanished, and he only caught her when she deigned to return to the city. He wasn't sure if she went off to speak to Ba'ul where no one would see, or if she just genuinely liked being away from the city and the noise and the people.
When she drifted back into town, Yuri braced the hand not holding his sword on his hip. "You're always going off for walks by yourself," he said. "Ever thought of asking if anyone cared to come with?"
Judith smiled, a secret, whimsical expression. "Why?" she asked blithely. "Is anyone interested in coming?"
Yuri matched her smile with a grin of his own. "Seems like the companionable thing to do."

"What the hell are you talking--"
And that was when Estelle kissed her.
