Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep gamethink 2

Done with Ventus's story

Okay, the thing is that Ven has a serious, serious crush on Terra. I didn't care about this pairing and I still don't care about this pairing, I do not want to ship it, but Ven's intense fixation on Terra is pretty gay. Even Xehanort noticed it, deciding that Terra was the key to preparing Ven for the x-blade. He does say he's like a brother, but you know what? That's a flimsy cover.

It's like Aqua doesn't exist sometimes in Ven's story. He had a ton of flashbacks to special warmfuzzy scenes he had with Terra that didn't include Aqua. Even if that meant he had to mentally edit her out of a scene she'd actually been in -- no joke, we once saw a flashback where she wasn't there, only to later see a more complete version of the scene and see that she was there, just not of interest to Ven; another time we had a flashback where Ven asked her a question, and then the flashback skips her answer and goes right to when Terra joins them.

It's not that he doesn't care about Aqua. I'm sure he loves her like a sister. But this thing with Terra is a huuuuuge hero-worship idealizing and idolizing step away from that. Which makes Terra more than a brother. And that's pretty gay.

So, again, to repeat: I don't ship it, I don't even really like it, but I still think it's there. I don't think Ven is in love with Terra, and I definitely don't think Terra is in love with Ven, but I do think Ven has a huge stalkery crush on him.

Now that I've rambled about that, the rest of Ventus's story!

I have to say that the plot was at least five times better. It might be because Ven is younger, so it doesn't come off as functional retardation when he expresses amazement about how dreams really can come true -- but he is also less incredibly dumb than Terra and I really enjoyed pretty much all his reactions and everything he experienced. I also like the progression: how he spends his first three worlds searching for Terra, then catches up with him and becomes disillusioned, then spends the next few worlds looking for surrogate friends, and coming away feeling really positive about his own friendships as a result. And then, of course, death doom and destruction. But his struggle and sacrifice were also impressive, as opposed to Terra, floundering and failing and not emoting almost to the very end: it was all very believable, nicely paced, and even well-written.

Also, Ven's combat was the best, at least so far in my opinion. He's really twirly and acrobatic and fun, but not slow, and all his unique light-based attacks (Salvation, Faith, etc) are very powerful, very pretty, and very disorientingly Roxasy. Also, the Wingblade command style is pure amazing.

His tiny angst about being tiny in Cinderellaworld was adorable. His bonding with Herc and Zack was adorable. His "fight" with Lea was adorable. His trip to Deep Space where he met Stitch who broke my heart over his broken wayfinder was adorable. Ven in general is just the most adorable thing ever. Oh god why does this series hate adorable so much?

I ended up feeling really bad for Pete, and I'm glad Ven was nice to him. XD He was trying so hard, you Disney Town assholes. And Ven's like, "I bet he just wants friends." Woooob.

Now for plot spoilers:

It turns out Ven is an artificial Princess of Heart that Xehanort made by (as near as I can tell) trying to build up Ven's darkness until he realized that wouldn't work, then unlocking his heart, stealing the darkness from it, and shoving the heart back into Ven? Resulting in a heart of pure light, and a heart of pure darkness. But Ven couldn't even fucking move with only 60-70% of a heart, until newborn Sora's heart reached out to him and shared with him. I am forced to conclude from this that hearts are sooo cute. ;;

I loved the fighting at the Station of Calling, and the fighting inside Ventus's heart. Epic boss battle for the last round, just like Terra's armor getting back up.

I think it is really creepy and really. evil. that Vanitas looks so much like Sora. I mean. What is that-- What is that.

So -- I'm running with the theory that the sequence of events is as follows: tinySoraheart patches up Ven, Ven continues for like four years, Vanitas and Ventus merge and Ven defeats Vanitas, thus ending their heart. But his heart still exists because it was merged with Sora; therefore, Sora ends up having lots of Venlike traits (Ven does Sora's pose, hands behind head and swaying) and techniques of fighting, and when Sora unlocks his own heart, his body takes on the qualities of Ven, who is essentially left within that shell.

So maybe Axel was right, and Roxas did have a heart all along.

Three worlds into Aqua's story

God she is so much smarter than Terra it makes me want to tear my hair out. Also, I can't help but notice that on her worlds she applied problem-solving and informed judgment! She wasn't always right, but the use of thought was pretty damn awesome, comparatively.

Also, repeating, for posterity: Cinderella is lame. Snow White is a moron. And Prince goddamn Philip is the only prince worth anyone's time.

I dunno, can totally buy it as a worried-about-friends thing, particularly since Ven's pretty much entirely clueless, and Terra, Aqua and Eraqus are all he really knows.

WINGBLADE IS BEST EVER OH MY FUCKING GOD.

Also, yes. Aqua is just the most badass badass who ever took the time to kill monsters in the face, so. Yes. <3<3<3<3<3<3<3
