PS3 extra scene translation: Ristelle's baby and bff titles

[When you get to Heliord after everyone joins back into your party after Zaude, we get the following extra scene with Ristelle...]


Judith: ......was that a voice...?

Raven: Sounds like a baby.

Estelle: ?


[She heads behind the blastia in the center of Heliord.]


Estelle: What could a baby be doing here...?


[Rita goes over to take the baby from her. Yuri and Karol exchange a glance.]


Rita: Hang on. Let me hold it. --Hey, stop crying.

Karol: As if that would actually work...

Estelle: That's amazing...... Rita, you have a real talent for mothering!

Rita: What's that supposed to mean......

Karol: Hey, do you think this baby was abandoned?

Yuri: If that's the case, we should leave it in the care of the knights.

Estelle: But they probably won't let us in at this time of night......

Rita: ......so we'll wait until morning. We'll just take care of it in the meantime.

Yuri: Yeah, I'll pass.

Rita: W, what?

Yuri: Sorry, but I don't get kids at all, so I'd probably be terrible at it.

Judith: I'll have to bow out too. It's so small. I'd be afraid I might break it.

Raven: A guy like me isn't really suited for raising kids, dontcha think?

Karol: I--

Rita: All right, fine. I'll do it, since you're all useless.

Karol: But I hadn't said anything yet......

Rita: Estelle, let's go.

Estelle: Eh? Ah-- Okay...!


[We fade to black, and come back in after a few seconds on the upper floor of the inn. Rita is sitting on the bed while Estelle is flailing over the apparently-crying baby in her arms.]


Rita: Oh, honestly......


[She gets to her feet. Fade to black; the baby is now in Rita's arms, with Estelle standing next to them.]


Estelle: I wonder why it stops crying whenever you're holding it?

Rita: Who knows.


[Fade... Rita and Estelle are both flailing this time, and Estelle has a book out.]


Rita: Why won't it stop crying all of a sudden...!

Estelle: U, umm... Could it be that it's hungry...?

Rita: So should we give it a banana or something?

Karol: *hidden out on the balcony* Ah... Rita, you can't fe--

Yuri: Shhh... Karol, shut up...


[Rita turns her head.]


Rita: W, who's--?

Estelle: *lightbulb* Rita, this child isn't ready for bananas yet. It still needs milk right now......


[Fade to black. We're still looking at them with the baby.]


Rita: Aww, man... You can't just start peeing without warning like that...

Estelle: U, um... I'll go downstairs and see if anyone has anything we can use to wrap it up in...!


[She runs off. Fade to black, and then...]


Estelle: Now that he's had his milk, he looks so satisfied, yes he does~

Rita: There we go, there we go...

Estelle: ......but I never would've guessed he was a boy.

Rita: Your face is red.

Estelle: Eh?!


[She puts her hands to her face. And blushes.]


Rita: I was just kidding.


[Fade to black! Now the baby is on the bed; Estelle is seated next to it, and Rita is standing across from her.]


Estelle: Heehee, he's fast asleep now.

Rita: *sigh...* And now it's really time for us to go to sleep too...

Estelle: I know, but even so shouldn't someone be watching him at all times...?

Rita: I guess we can't relax just yet.


[Estelle starts to lean a little on the bed.]


Estelle: ......I wonder where Yuri and the others are?


[Rita glances over her shoulder at the balcony.]


Rita: Who knows......


[Estelle slumps down a little more.]


Estelle: Somehow it feels like we're this child's mother and father...

Rita: Huh? What're you saying?

Estelle: Hey, if... if we don't find his mother, let's raise him ourselves...


[Then she slumps over the rest of the way and after a few seconds, is fast asleep.]


Rita: ...Don't say stupid things like that...


[She glances back over her shoulder again.]


Rita: And you guys... In the morning, I'm gonna make you regret this.


["..." and "..." suddenly appear from the balcony. The sleep music plays as we fade to black for real this time, and then the next morning, we're in the Chevaliers Headquarters in Heliord, with a woman there.]


Woman: Ahh, my baby...! Thank you so much. I only took my eyes off him for a second, and then someone carried him off.....

Rita: Honestly... Be more careful!


[The woman bows and leaves, without her baby again with her invisible baby.]


Karol: But that's great.

Estelle: I wish we could've looked after him just a little longer...

Rita: *shrugging* You've got to be kidding.

Estelle: But it seemed like he was really getting attached to you, Rita.

Rita: There's no way that was attachment.

Estelle: Then it must be that children can instinctively recognize good people.

Rita: Good... people...

Estelle: Well, aren't you're a good person, Rita?

Rita: ..........



Notes: I love everyone's excuses for not taking care of the baby, especially Judith's. "Hmm, what if I break it?" And Karol being the only one who knows better than to feed a banana to an infant. Anyway, it's all very cute and fluffy and Ristelle will totally get a baby of their own someday, I'm sure.

[If you go back to Zaphias and sleep in Yuri's room after getting all four spirits, you can get a scene between Rita and Estelle...]


[Karol is asleep on Yuri's bed. Raven is asleep on his floor. Yuri is staring out the window thoughtfully.]


Yuri: ......


[He looks down. Below, Rita is standing out in front of the inn.]


Rita: ......


[Estelle comes down the stairs.]


Estelle: Can't you sleep?

Rita: Mm? It's not that.


[They both sit on the steps together.]


Estelle: When we defeat the Adephagos, our journey will finally end.

Rita: And then will you go back to the castle?

Estelle: I guess I will. I have to. ......what about you, Rita?

Rita: Since Aspio was uprooted, I suppose we should reconstruct it.

Estelle: Well then, I'll go and help you out.

Rita: A princess can't just go wandering out whenever she feels like it, you know.

Estelle: Oh, that's right... ......but when I go back to the castle, friends can still visit me, right?

Rita: You'll forget about me.


[Rita glances away.]


Estelle: That won't happen.

Rita: Even if that idiot prince becomes Emperor, you'll still probably have lots of responsibilities. You'll be busy taking care of the country. You won't have time to play around. Day after day, it'll just be one thing after another, on and on, and there'll be so many endless things to worry about... And in a situation like that, you'll just lose track of that girl you used to know.

Estelle: Huh?

Rita: I said I'll go to see you.

Estelle: Rita...!

Rita: But don't get me wrong. It's not because I'll be lonely or anything like that.

Estelle: I understand. ......You're such a good person, Rita.

Rita: Hey, cut it out. It's not that I'm a good person.

Estelle: Good people always say that. Sometimes good people feel the need to act like bad people. Like you do, Rita.....

Rita: That sounds like some of the idiots we know, anyway.

Estelle: Heehee, now that you mention it, it sounds like most of us. ...Can we talk like this again sometime? ...and stay friends like this forever?

Rita: Until you forget about me, anyway.

Estelle: I won't forget. We'll always be friends.

Rita: Always?

Estelle: Always and always.

Rita: Well... that seems kind of troublesome...


[Estelle gets the "Genius Mage's Best Friend" title. Rita gets the "Imperial Princess's Best Friend" title. Meanwhile, back upstairs, still watching...]


Yuri: ......


[The title "Genius Mage's Best Friend" reads "Rita's best friend forever. She pinky-swore that she would always feel this way." The title "Imperial Princess's Best Friend" reads "She made a vow to be Estelle's best friend forever. Although she may gripe about it, she isn't as annoyed as she'd have you believe."]


Notes: Rita's insecurity about their friendship will never stop being adorable. But between this scene and the last scene, I feel a little like Rita actively feels unworthy of Estelle's friendship. Parallels of Flynn and Yuri: Yuri puts Flynn on a pedestal and thinks Flynn deserves better (and is ignoring or dismissing Flynn's preoccupation with him); Rita puts Estelle on a pedestal and thinks Estelle deserves better, and tries to shrug her off, despite her own obvious preoccupation with her.

I know Rita and Yuri agreed that they were both bad people early on in the game, but the repeated focus on Rita's discomfort whenever Estelle calls her a good person makes me feel like she thinks a good person wouldn't have feelings for her "best friend" like this.
