Hisashiburi deshou?
Wow, long time no update. I didn't have time to write down my state of affairs, I suppose, since I was too busy... not doing anything important.
Three issues!
Issue A: The .hack//SIGN Dub
I am ecstatic. I watched the first broadcast, like twenty seconds ago, and it made me very happy. They obviously made a good effort to keep all the voice actors sounding at least somewhat like the original seiyuu, and the tone of everything was kept nicely the same. The one and only thing that I thought was noticeably different was that sometimes instead of sounding fatalistic Tsukasa sounded too normal -- questining "Waiting... a long time?" instead of dully repeating "Waiting... a long time..." -- and that MAHO has now become Maha. In the original, his name was meant to be all caps, and probably supposed to mean "magic" (mahou, long o, means magic in Japanese) and they changed it to a more normal name, Maha. But I'm not objecting at all, because this dub is the best I've seen in a long time. Congatulations, Project .Hack!
And... *tear* The soundtrack! Heck, even the original Japanese of Yasashii Yoake was kept! *heart*
Issue B: My Latest Reading Endeavors
First I picked up "Swordspoint: A Melodrama of Manners", which was a random book I had read a description of and picked up. I discovered quickly that the main characters are gay. Imagine my delight! Richard St. Vier is one of the coolest guys ever, and Alec is so amazingly original as a character that I adore him to death, even though he's also one of the single most offensive protagonists in the history of time. An actual critic who gave this book glowing praise referred to Alec once as "The Boyfriend from Hell", and I have to say that I agree. It's the perfect nickname. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is both literate and in possession of good taste... if you can find it. (The author is Ellen Kusher.)
Then I started reading my other new book, which I bought at random from Barnes and Noble with a holiday gift certificate. It turns out that this book's main character is a lesbian. I swear to God this is random chance. Do I know how to pick 'em, or do I know how to pick 'em?
My gaydar must be on overdrive lately.
Speaking of gaydar overdrive...
Issue C: Planet Ladder
...Planet Ladder is just full of gay. Seeu and Kagami are gay, Bambi is showing every sign of having a crush on Kaguya that I think is adorable, and Kura definitely is having thoughts about Lagunahaan that are just a few miles to the right of normal.
Planet Ladder has magic and fantasy, slashy suggestions en masse, and whole truckloads of politics and manipulation. It was clearly made with the sole intention of making me like it, and I'm wholeheartedly behind it. If Alicia weren't planning a website for it, I might have to do it, and that would suck, because I still haven't gotten Shine up.
I think my favorite character is Kura. He is the epitome of evil tyrant -- he's the emperor of Geo, the most advanced world of all now that Asu is gone, he has conquered no fewer than three "worlds" and at least one more is his in all but name, and he'll have you hanged if you so much as speak the name of his sword. (The living weapon, Nox Light. It's extremely powerful, and he's very proud of it.) He even looks like an evil tyrant: with his little Goatee of Evil and his thin, straight hair.
But he's an evil tyrant who has a sense of humor and knows how to have fun! He's grinny and jokey and stuff! When he told Bambi to stop calling him "old man" and she asked him what he's prefer to be called, he recommended that she try KURA-CHAN instead!
He would've killed her ages ago if she didn't look so much like Lagunahaan. I want desperately to know what happened between Laguna and Kura~.
Of course, Kura and Laguna are only fragments of the massive coolness of Planet Ladder. Seeu and Kagami/"Gold" and Kaguya and Bambi and Meshie and Idou... are all wonderfully, wonderfully cool. They all deserve fics. I'll get around to them; I started a fic for Seeu that is chock full of horror and yet very likely true, and I want to finish that first. Then I should do Walks Among Thee...
I'm so busy.

The jury is still out on Idou, I think. I can see where you'd get the impression that he was a bit jealous, but at the moment I'm thinking he was kind of iffy on Seeu from the beginning. Like, he didn't know whether to be his friend or lecture him. Or something. I DO think that there is possible a triangle of some sort between Kura and Idou and Laguna, however... Because remember that it was just the three of them when it came to the question Laguna never answered, and both Laguna and Idou were priest-types. (Kura just happened to be OF a religion.) Since Kura and Idou were enemies in the first place...

I don't think Laguna had a PROBLEM with Gaviesu being a cross-dresser so much as he was horribly embarrassed that he hadn't immediately recognized that he was a man. ^^ Because you're right -- Laguna is NOT exactly the incarnation of respectable manliness himself, over here... ^_~

For me, I think that Idou was attracted to Seeu, but it seems as if Seeu and Kagami paired up early on. However, I can see your point, he does seems to try to be the older brother type for Seeu, but I think he was like that for all of them. He seems so much older. I do agree about Idou having something with Kura and Laguna together. I'm inclined to believe that because of how Kura introduces Bambi as "Our new lover". It's like she is Laguna's replacement. Maybe for Kura she is in way. He was so hurt, by Laguna's death... I would feel sorry for him except he's really insane and cruel. Deep down I think it was Kura/Laguna and that Idou would have been more of a sort of third wheel.
