So, recap: Asbel grew up and was all excited to become a knight, but his father was killed in a border war, so he had to go home and do lordly things. Everyone there hated him for abandoning his family, so he struggled with the decision of doing the right thing and taking over lordship of a territory where all his friends think he's a jerk, vs doing the thing he really wants to do and going back to the place where he has friends and dreams and aspirations.
He decides to be responsible and resign from the knight academy and become lord of Lhant, but the border war half-destroys it. Then Hubert, Asbel's little brother who was sold off to a nearby noble family, sweeps in to save Lhant. His power levels are over 9000, putting Asbel quite thoroughly to shame, and then he banishes Asbel.
Asbel hates his life for a while, and now we're just kind of meandering, seeking a cause.
If men are chasing after Asbel, Sophie is in danger by being with him. With the same amazing powers of ignoring the fact that Sophie is like 10x awesomer than him that have served him well for the last seven years, Asbel decides that he should try taking her to Richard -- Richard can protect her.
The stalkers find us again and go "I KNEW YOU WERE PLANNING TO GO TO THE CASTLE!" Just as long as you mean that in the sense of "I knew that would be where you'd run" and and not "I knew that and that's why I was chasing you", because he only decided to go there because you were chasing him, which is kind of circular, you see.
It bothers me that I don't have any idea what these guys want.
Envoy: To see Prince Richard? How do you plan to visit someone who's supposed to be dead? Asbel: Wait-- Richard's dead?!
Surprise surprise, the men answer nothing and give away nothing, meaning that Asbel is now more confused and hurt than he was before, and that is saying something.
Asbel is very quietly upset about Richard, but we're going to go look for him anyway. We won't give up!! To the catacombs of the royal sanctuary where we got Sophie killed last time. This is a great idea, Asbel.
We find someone crouched down and clearly struggling through the tunnel.
It's -- Richard!! :D
Richard is as surprised to see us as we are to see him, and also surprised to hear that he's allegedly dead. Asbel gets under his arm and tries to lead him out of the tunnel, but we are attacked by "Cedric's men". Asbel and Sophie get between Richard and the soldiers, and now we fight!!
Asbel tries really hard to call Richard by his title like a prim little knight, but Richard doesn't put up with that nonsense! Teasing about how he could order Asbel to call him by name.
Everyone has forgotten what Sophie looks like so Richard has no idea who she is until Asbel tells her. And then he is also surprised that she is alive, but not that she is fourteen.
Richard thinks that she's the same Sophie, somehow.
We exit the catacombs and Richard unceremoniously drops down onto the sand, refusing to go into the nearby hut. Asbel warns Sophie not to go too far, because seriously, she is a retarded seven-year-old and she will just walk off cliffs if Asbel doesn't get all overprotective parent on her.
I... I think Richard and Asbel are her parents. Richard offered to hold her hand earlier.
Richard: My father was murdered. Asbel: What a coincidence! So was mine! Asbel: What?! Richard: The royal guard turned on him. I fled into the secret passage. Asbel: BUT-- BUT... KNIGHTS. Richard: Yeah, that's kind of the disturbing part. Betrayed by his own knights. Asbel: BUT I WAS GOING TO BE A KNIGHT. Richard: Asbel, you saved my life, again. You weren't going to murder me. Richard: "I thought about that day as I fled the castle. I was so desperately hoping you'd come to my aid. And you did. You actually did. ...You have no idea how happy I was to see you, Asbel."
First of all, awwww.
Second of all, holy shit someone was happy to see Asbel
Richard has no idea what Asbel is talking about when he mentions the alliance with Strahta. Since the whole "alliance" was supposed to be Strahta+the royal family of Windor, this is not a good sign.
The late king would never have taken sides in a dispute like that. But the Strahtan military moving in was around the same time as the uprising in Barona...
Archduke Cedric, Richard's uncle, is the man behind all of this. Richard tells Asbel very clearly that he plans to build an army and avenge his father. He asks Asbel very humbly to fight with him, "I need your strength," and Asbel agrees, offering a hand to Richard, who had deflated.
Good boy! Seize on the only person who is happy to see you and stick with him.
Richard is the blond pretty guy, Cheria is the cute pink-haired girl, and Hubert has blue hair and glasses. Malik is our resident "old guy", he's a blond rugged-looking man, and Pascal is a woman I haven't met yet, but she has funny hair.
SKIT! Why is Richard so huge in skits compared to Asbel? He's only an inch taller. In the actual game, their sprites are much more sane-looking.
Also, wait a second, that chibi skit art just clearly showed Richard having two different colored eyes?! What just happened there. Where did that grey eye come from.
She wakes up and gets way up in Sophie's personal space excitedly, and Sophie violently shoves her across the landscape. Then runs and hides behind Asbel. "She touched me. :( " SO CUTE.
Pascal runs up, undeterred, wanting to touch Sophie again, but Asbel gets between them. It's like getting to touch a celebrity omg she never thought she'd meet one in person omg
Asbel: One what? Do you know about Sophie? Tell us! Pascal: It's easier to just show you! It's right over there.
Pascal takes us to a strange glowing thing on the ground. She says you use this to just PSHEW down to the underground ruins where the illusion is! She talks in gibberish.
If we take the warp thingy down to the "ruins", we can get around the bridge, Richard and Asbel realize.
