I'm finishing Re:Coded, since it apparently has the premise for KH:3DS in it? But yeah, it features shiny pretty fancy 3D renders.
If nothing else, I will keep you informed about what happens and you can decide if you want to consume the whole series? KH3DS is due out at the end of July, so it's not a lot of time to power through like six Kingdom Hearts games, and you already have a busy schedule of playing things that aren't The World Ends With You.
Playing around it with has also made Nomura start considering a sequel, which I am......... wary about. Nomura's sequels have made KH increasingly nonsensical and ridiculous, and just look at the train wreck of FFXIII-2, and...

Hm. Sounds like wary is the only appropriate response. Well, nonsensical and ridiculous can be fun in their own ways, and--as you say--more TWEWY. That said, I have not actually got around to FFXIII-2 yet either, and I've purposely avoided reading about it. Now I'm kind of curious. X D

I disliked FFXIII-2 so much that at 80% finished I lost my will to
livecontinue and sold the game back while it was still worth money by Gamestop's standards. The premise was bland, the old characters were maligned and the new characters sucked massively, the plot was stupid, the ending is worse, and it was all just a huge annoying setup for many future DLC releases that will "explain" and "fix" all the things that didn't make sense. I don't like that in my games. The battle system was fun, though. I started a liveplay or two on this journal a few weeks back and it quickly devolved from genuine commentary and interest into "What the fuck? This is so stupid" or "I am getting angry angry" about 70 times per night. /orzzOf course, I didn't like FFXIII much to begin with, so it's no great loss by my standards.
For TWEWY I am torn between excitement at more things and genuine worry about them ruining it. It is a beautiful, extremely moving, self-contained story, one which I find more or less perfect just as it is. The only real question I still want answered is "Why is Joshua so pissed off about the happy ending in the secret video?" and even that I can theorize about. If they make it a new story featuring mostly new characters, maybe even in a different city's Game, that could be amazing. But if they give it the Nomura treatment and come back and say "Hi, here are the characters I know you want, the ending didn't actually work out, and here are some things that don't make sense, and we heard you like emotional impact, so have all of it until you go numb! BUY IT UNTIL YOU RUN OUT OF MONEY" then I will destroy Tokyo.

That's pretty much what I expected from FFXIII-2. Fortunately for me, I'm able to disconnect story/characters from gameplay. I much prefer both to be good, obviously, but as long as I can have fun killing things, I'm usually okay. OTOH, obvious DLC hooks make me raeg, so . . .
I think a different city is the only way a TWEWY sequel would work for me, with a few familiar characters as the battle-scarred veterens--kind of a Gensui sort of thing. And real!Shiki, definitely.
Weirdly, the thing I'm most concerned about is the handling of the pins, clothing, and food. X D

I can SORT of come up with ways that a direct sequel could work, but I'm not confident. But it would be amazing to see another Game setting, or a future Game setting.
Could you make a compelling game out of an AU that's less silly than Another Day?I feel like part of what made TWEWY really work was that we didn't know anyone, and they could play with the fact that Neku doesn't remember anything and no one could tell for days, and play with the tragedies and reveals of each character. Going into a new game already knowing a lot about each character would make it a completely different experience right off the bat, although there are still a lot of unanswered backstory questions for every character.I'm sad that I doubt Nomura will do anything interesting with the TWEWY cast. I have about 80% confidence that they will be mostly thrown in there haphazardly, say some things that may or may not be IC and/or copy-paste dialogue from their game, Sora will convince everyone that their hearts are connected and undermine the entire driving theme behind the game, and we'll miss all opportunity for a really interesting, unique integration into KH's setting. This is the treatment we've gotten from Disney worlds in KH games ever since the first one; the first one took the Disney characters and interpreted them for KH's setting, but the second one literally just copy-pasted a lot of plot and dialogue. But Nomura has a slightly better track record with interpreting the FF characters, so he might be more willing to experiment wit them... In TWEWY, we have a character whose closed-off heart genuinely equals the downward spiral and destruction of a world. That's chock full of KH significance! I want to see him play with it.
If Nomura does well by TWEWY-in-KH, my confidence in the sequel will go up. Otherwise, I'm not exactly holding my breath for awesome. X3

The time between a game coming out in Japan and a game coming out in America is fraught with difficulty, especially with a series like KH. When I app Neku at Marina I'm going to label his intro post with "If anyone spoils me for KH3D, I will punch you right in the throat."
And then I will keep going "AHHH I SAW A SCREENCAP WITH CAT'S MURAL IN TWILIGHT TOWN THAT IS THE COOLEST IDEA /glides right past everything"

Anyway, I think the real sticking point in transplanting TWEWY into KH is the difference in dev teams. The former was done by Jupiter, the latter by the actual KH team. Even though Nomura has directive control over both, their work seems to stand in stark contrast. I always thought the original Chain of Memories felt kind of disconnected from the rest of the series.
Maybe they should get Jupiter to work on that part of the game, because otherwise it'll likely turn out like you said above, just transplanting the plot and dialogue of TWEWY into KH.
