I FINISHED A VIDEO GAME OMG
CACKLING
I FINALLY BEAT KINGDOM HEARTS RE: CODED! Saw the secret ending, too.
The entire premise of this game is, literally, that Sora needed extensive training in soul-crushing despair before he could be ready to confront the reality of how much Roxas and Ven's lives sucked.
Roxas is still my wonderful beloved tragic touchy pissy woobie and I love him. (His whole logic behind the final boss fight was literally, How dare you be okay with forgetting things!! FUCK YOU.) Riku and Sora are still inordinately gay together. Kairi is still sadly shoehorned in as an afterthought instead of being a relevant character. Namine and Sora are still tragic and I still OTP them like mad. And for the record, that does not count as thanking Namine either!! The real Sora has to tell the real Namine.
On a related note, I still feel Nomura owes Roxas and Namine (and Xion and Axel) better than "And then they were absorbed into whole people who were not them, and everyone lived happily ever after but they no longer existed, the end." They rationalize so much other nonsensical bullshit, can't he rationalize some nonsensical bullshit justifying Roxas and Namine and Ven all getting to coexist happily in their own bodies, being normal whole people?
Damn you, Kingdom Hearts, for making so little sense, and being so frustrating, and yet giving me all the feelings.

Although, if you think re:Coded is nonsense, well... :D

Is Roxas in it?
no subject
...do you really want me to answer that?
no subject
Is he not in it? :(

That's not what I said. I just figured whether he's in it or not would be a spoiler and you're generally anti-spoiler!

"He" was fucking adorable in Coded, even though I really, sincerely thought the game was over by the time he appeared, so I was breathing fire a tiny bit.

Aaaaand... not as far as I know. I've only played to the beginning of the last world, since I'm beastly underleveled and keep getting my ass handed to me, so there's a chance he might turn up there? Considering what the last world is. But I don't know for certain. I guess you're going to have to be content with Neku. c:
Here Be Spoilers For Coded
But he's really, super ambivalent about it. He's like, "You'll meet people. You won't remember who many of them are, and they won't remember you. But you do know them. And the moment you leave, you'll forget them again. So it really doesn't matter what you do."
And Sora goes through and Roxas keeps going "You forgot them, didn't you? How does that feel? Hurts, doesn't it?" and Sora is like "Yeah, this sucks, I'm really super sad, you dick" and Roxas would be like, "You're letting your sadness rule you. You're empty. You have to let go of the things you don't remember or you can never be happy."
Sora debated it for a long time as he went through Castle Oblivion, but eventually went, "No, because maybe it will hurt less, but the hurt and the sadness is proof that I knew these people, and that's part of who I am. Until I remember, I accept the pain that comes from forgetting them."
And Roxas is like, "You... ACCEPT the pain of forgetting? I WILL SHOW YOU PAIN, YOU STUPID LITTLE PUNK." And then he seriously kicks my ass, but I had infinite health cheats on, so nyah nyah.
After he "wins" Sora refuses to kill him, and he goes, "Oh, because you figured out I'm just data too, huh? Not even worth finishing off."
But Sora is Jesus and goes, "No, it's because during the fight I felt your pain, and it's horrible. :( And somehow I know that it's my pain, too. :( "
So Roxas gives up, because obviously Sora's Soraness is unstoppable, and resigns himself to fading into nothingness, AGAIN. He melts into Sora, who is super confused.
It was adorable. And miserable! But it was very much in line with my Roxas. 8D

To which I replied "So it's like every other game in the series then?"

"Okay so the first game ended with the main antagonist defeated, the worlds all returned to normal, and everything pretty well-settled except that our hero's best friend was stuck in an alternate dimension. The hero is determined to save him and return home with him. The heroine is at home waiting for them. This should be easy to wrap up!"
"But we'll do it in a side story where the hero loses all his memories because a new group of characters working for an unspecified Organization want to use him to secure promotions for themselves. It will also turn out that the hero's best friend no longer needs rescuing, but he'll never know that, and we'll end his game with him in a coma, trying to recover his memories, while his best friend fights off the villain from the first game who is possessing him."
"And then when we come back to the main story, we'll introduce an additional character, and explain that all the people in the Organization are a new type of monster that is threatening the universe and the hero has to stop them, and also make some of them happy, because this type of monster just wants to be human again and some of them are good, so some of them will be absorbed by the hero and the heroine and we'll pretend that was a good thing. At the end, the hero and his best friend and the heroine are all back home, and everything is settled until they get a letter I won't go into details about."
"THEN, THREE MORE SIDE STORIES, ONE OF WHICH TELLS US MORE ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION MEMBERS AND ONE OF WHICH IS A STORY ABOUT NEW CHARACTERS IN THE PAST AND HOW THE MAIN VILLAIN IS STILL TOTALLY ALIVE AND POSSESSING ANOTHER CHARACTER AND HOW THE HERO AND THE BEST FRIEND HAVE OTHER PEOPLE INSIDE OF THEM. THE FINAL SIDE STORY WILL BE ABOUT HOW THE CONTENTS OF THE HERO'S JOURNAL ARE ACTUALLY A COMPUTER WORLD FILLED WITH GLITCHES AND A DATA VERSION OF THE HERO HAS TO STOP THE GLITCHES FROM something something something IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT, AND THE WHOLE POINT WILL BE THAT IN KINGDOM HEARTS III THE HERO HAS TO BRING ALL THE DEAD PEOPLE BACK TO LIFE AND MAKE THEM ALL HAPPY."
I assume that, by the end of Kingdom Hearts III, Nomura's next game will need to resolve multiple time paradoxes, explain string theory, and grant everyone immortality.

But yes I agree (on many points). Eating so many people probably isn't very healthy. I mean, look at the other examples of people eaters, Vanitas and Xehanort. Not comforting. =/
I do remember being asked by a someone who never played KH to explain the logic behind Nobodies only for them to exclaim that games shouldn't be this complicated before I was halfway done. This was back when KH2 just came out too. XP
But, eh. So long as I mainly view the series as, fun gameplay + Saving Disney worlds with Disney characters + feels, I'm good. Plus on some level it is fun to see how weird KH can get at times. Xp
The only thing I'd probably want to add is for them to get better/more script writers so some things can feel a little more consistent/balanced (considering how many plot points/characters they've got now).
You were probably joking about immortality and string theory's in KH but I'm taking that as a serious possibility. After DDD there's nothing that will surprise me anymore (or was it Recoded?). When Nomura was given the advice to not make KH too simple of a story he really took it above and beyond. XP

And your point is certainly well-taken; when I was more invested in the fandom (and less enjoying the ride), I used to get kind of annoyed by the wide swaths of fandom convinced that Sora is or was a terrible person for these things that were completely or almost completely beyond his control. Eating Roxas was something he did unconsciously, and Roxas had already eaten Xion, who was trying to eat him anyway, and eating Ven was an act of compassion on tiny Sora's part.
If I was frustrated with anything by the end of Re:coded, though, it was data!Namine's continual devaluation of herself. (
I was joking, but I also haven't played DDD yet. (Re:coded was plenty weird for me, CAN'T WAIT FOR DREAM DROP DISTANCE.)

So much crazy is genius in my mind. =D
Ugh, don't remind me of those fans. I've stopped trying to see how anyone could rationalize Sora being worse than Xehanort just because he defended himself and other innocents against Org. 13's plan to kill and use everyone for their own sake. Seriously, how was he suppose to react, gee willy I feel too bad to fight back because they don't have hearts even after they mind raped me (and he does remember that in the final mix version) and want profit at the expense of my friends? =/
Seriously the only Nobodies worth any sympathy (after a while in some cases) were Namine, Roxas, Xion, and Axel who were either never bad to begin with or actually had development and did things that made them more heroic. Guess which Nobodies Sora never tried to kill. >>
I'm going to assume those fans have problems with heroic/positive characters who give a flip about anyone besides themselves (you can't even use the fact they're Nobodies as an argument since even someone like Axel proved he could eventually decide to care about something other than the Org.13's plans enough to sacrifice himself over it. All it took was giving the ice cream he stole to someone).
Namine may not be the most tragic character out of everyone. But in a way she's kind of the saddest to me. =/
She's the only main character not part of any trio. Sora, her first real friend, forgets her and only remembers her when it's too late to have a real reunion. She's born in Castle Oblivion all alone and the first people who find her physically and emotionally abuse her as a pawn to hurt others (not the most motherly enviroment for a newborn existence). In fact, Namine has to keep hurting people afterwards, which is disturbing to watch considering her nature appears gentle and peaceful. She helps Xion to 'vanish' and helps brainwashes Roxas to wake Sora up, whom she tries to explain things to in order to hopefully make things easier for him, but DIZ won't let her. Not to mention DIZ is the person she spends the most time with during those days and he despises her existence enough to order her death when he's done needing her (she doesn't even get a apology from Ansem like Roxas did, and Kairi's right there).
She reunites with Kairi and gets to be with Roxas and Sora through this way which is something she's been aiming for. But I guess when you compare her resignment to her fate with Roxas or Xion's attitude about it you just get the impression how lonely and little her life experience was compared to the others. Not comparing pain or anything, I mean Roxas and Xion also decided that was for the best all things considered. But they at least struggled with it due to having found something of their own they wanted to live for, such as Axel, each other,...ice cream. =/
Namine seems to be based more around atonement for her actions alone and her first chance at peaceful happiness where she or someone else is not threatened happens only after she's been eaten and accepted as gone by most.
Dang, if it wasn't for the fun romp through Disney worlds I'd be constantly thinking how much KH character's lives can suck even in a good ending.
You may not think so after playing it. It get's pretty... deep. Yeah, that's a good word for it. One part of the game actually freaked me out, which has never happened before in a KH game before (the visuals...don't be fooled by them). But other than that look forward to some pretty decent character growth/insight for Sora and Riku. And some other surprises (get the secret ending).
(Between Re:coded and this, I think Re:coded is still weirder in terms of plot. But that's my opinion.) Hope you enjoy it.

"Sora's Soraness" Pffth (skyness), that's one way to describe it suppose. Xp
I've long since beaten DDD and let me tell you without spoiling anything it's a combination of...
What the heck. Smart AI pets, can they stay forever! Oh, this is so fun and happy- uh, ehhh! Ouch. Wow, I can't believe they actually went there. Not again, not- oh well it's not that bad. Disney magic beats SE logic! I knew it. Noo! Yes, they went there. Finish Versus, I need KH3 within the next decade (waits for Kh 1.5 localization date). x0
But yeah. DDD has some things you'll be scratching your head over (which is probably a pointless thing to say since it's KH). Though from you guy's comments, I think you might feel very hopeful about certain points that get addressed/more development than previously before. Plus a lot of characters do get attention that might surprise you (you know, for a smaller game like this). But overall it's a fun game that pushes the plot forward and sets up KH3 and what you might expect from it other than saving TAV.
