Fandoms with and without shipping
I've now watched the first 4 episodes of Daredevil (why is it so fucking hard to find time to watch this show?! I want to watch it so much) and it's great. I like Matt, I like how they depict his senses, I like him and Claire and I would be fine if they were just awesome friends but I ship it pretty hard (KIIIISS), and wow this show is violent. All the over-the-top explosions in the world aren't as violent as watching men just punching each other for five minutes, or a nice long scene of a man using a car door to slowly beat another man's head off.
It occurred to me recently that politics and current events is sort of my fandom now. It updates constantly, I follow it and have emotional reactions to it, I want to talk about it with other people who enjoy it... So, to that end, I created a new community:

My plan is to update it on a mostly daily basis with quotes from a linked news article and some thoughts about it. Discussion in the comments will be encouraged, and a socially liberal slant will be taken. I thought I might begin posting probably next Monday (har, 4/20) so as to have some posts up for the beginning of
three_weeks_for_dw... Although idk maybe I should wait since I'm going to Scotland the first week of May... But idk maybe I should start now because I am certainly bursting with opinions and listening to Fox News in the background of my life is slowly driving me insane!
Anyway, you can join if you want to read about current events stuff and then say words about it. That way I won't be talking to myself.

Daredevil is violent. In that second episode when we had that prolonged single shot of Matt fighting like a dozen guys in that long hallway. It felt endless, but there was no mitigation. Matt's injuries were tangible and you could see how hurt he was in every instant he could allow himself to feel it. They make no bones about the fact that beating a man unconscious is not easy.
I'm not a big fan of violence in media, and I won't say I didn't look away from the screen a few times, but I think it's fantastic in Daredevil. They're embracing reality, experimenting with genre and tone as Marvel's canons do, and it's "gritty" in a way that gritty stuff rarely is. It's powerful and they've used it to great effect so far.

I was kind of digging Matt and Claire from the first time they talked, they had a great dynamic. I wasn't sure she would ever show up again after the abrupt end of that episode, but I hoped that she would continue to be the person he goes to for patching up. When the Russians got her and Matt parkoured his way across town and he was too late and he raged out and threw some poor stranger's chair across the apartment I had so many feelings. So many feelings. And he hugged her and she made him feel her heartbeat and he told her his name and. KIIIISS.
That episode was soooo violent, I flinched with genuine concern about what might happen to Claire. I feel like all bets are off!! The car door lskdfjlsjg just fucking wow. I did not recognize Gideon Emery, not that it matters, he's not coming back, lolol.
Do not embarrass Fisk in front of potential girlfriends, he does not like it

I also really like Foggy and his dynamic with Matt. I keep comparing it to the film (at least the theatrical release) where Foggy was played as an incompetent lawyer who was only going along with Matt's idealism because he couldn't get a job anywhere else. Having them both be intelligent, good at their jobs and sharing the starting ideal of their practice works so much better.
I'm uncertain about Karen. She's yet to win me over, even if I do like bits and pieces of her story line.
Even Fisk is really well done. I'm legitimately interested in his courtship with Vanessa, which I did not think would be the case. I wouldn't say I ship it but the actors make it work and the exchanges sound natural, and I am definitely wanting to see where that plot thread goes, as she's his wife in the source canon.
I SPEWED WORDS AT YOU, I'm sorry. (I'm not.)

I think Foggy is great here. I mean, I'm hardly surprised that a Marvel production doesn't involve cliche comedy secondary characters, but that's really what he came off as in the Affleck movie -- he was just some sleazy lawyer we were supposed to laugh at because he's so not a hero and then forget about when he's not on-screen. In the show Foggy really feels like a great friend to Matt. You can tell that they have fun together, and he's actually cute funny instead of loser funny. I really enjoyed that when Matt came in and was like we're taking this case because of ulterior reasons, shut up Foggy, Foggy went along with it until they were in private and then called him out on it, and Matt admitted that he was getting a little too vigilante and he apologized for undermining their very genuine partnership.
Agreed on Karen. I'm not sure what my hesitation is. I don't dislike her! I was sympathetic to her not wanting to go home to her apartment that time... Loved when she and Foggy came pounding on Matt's door in the middle of the night when he was out getting stitches. But I'm not really a fan of hers at this point in time. She can stay.
lol, I am slightly enamored of Fisk and his apparent awkwardness around women?? What a quirk for a terrifying criminal kingpin to have. I have this sense of him when they're together that he's still scary, there's just something unsettling about him, but he's leashed scary, and he's almost reserved? Introverted? I don't know. I look forward to seeing more with him and Vanessa too. Loved when Gideon Emery came in and half the restaurant stood up, revealing themselves to be his security team, and Vanessa is like "...wtf, who am I on a date with". Wesley's a neat guy too!
I GUESS I KIND OF LOVE EVERYTHING??? is the message of this comment

i'm really glad they chose to be so violent in this series if only because it wouldn't feel like daredevil if it wasn't so gritty and bloody and dark. it would've been like... deadpool without the r rating. i'm so amazed at how well the show runners captured the essence of miller's reinvented daredevil but also made it so it's not... as dark (because i can't imagine anyone sticking around to watch if all they saw was matt constantly failing). but really, they said they were basing the show off of the books of miller and bendis and boy, oh boy, can i see it.
unfortunately there is... one thing that really disappointed me but talking about it would be a spoiler so i'll just go on to say that besides the one thing, this show is perfect to me. they got the matt and foggy relationship down and i love what they're doing with karen. it's probably because i disliked her so greatly in the comics that it's refreshing to see this sort of take with her, where she's actively playing an important role, rather than her just constantly pitying matt in the background and talking about how sad and terrible it is that he's blind.
but yeah, huge approval from me. i can't wait to see what else netflix has in store for us because i now trust them with my life.

I think they have found a good balance between "Matt is in over his head" and "Matt is awesome". It's dark and grim but not hopeless. And it's heavy but not miserable. IMO it's a huge improvement over the grimdark srs bizns DC movies.
The comics Karen sounds kind of awful, lol. No one wants constant boohooing over how sad it is for someone to have a disability!
I watched like the first forty seconds of the fifth episode and then Netflix quit until I had to go to class and I was maaaaad :(
