Fandoms with and without shipping

I've now watched the first 4 episodes of Daredevil (why is it so fucking hard to find time to watch this show?! I want to watch it so much) and it's great. I like Matt, I like how they depict his senses, I like him and Claire and I would be fine if they were just awesome friends but I ship it pretty hard (KIIIISS), and wow this show is violent. All the over-the-top explosions in the world aren't as violent as watching men just punching each other for five minutes, or a nice long scene of a man using a car door to slowly beat another man's head off.

It occurred to me recently that politics and current events is sort of my fandom now. It updates constantly, I follow it and have emotional reactions to it, I want to talk about it with other people who enjoy it... So, to that end, I created a new community: [community profile] daily_liberal

My plan is to update it on a mostly daily basis with quotes from a linked news article and some thoughts about it. Discussion in the comments will be encouraged, and a socially liberal slant will be taken. I thought I might begin posting probably next Monday (har, 4/20) so as to have some posts up for the beginning of [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw... Although idk maybe I should wait since I'm going to Scotland the first week of May... But idk maybe I should start now because I am certainly bursting with opinions and listening to Fox News in the background of my life is slowly driving me insane!

Anyway, you can join if you want to read about current events stuff and then say words about it. That way I won't be talking to myself.

I'm three episodes in on Daredevil, so I can't say much because I don't know much, but I kind of love the level of violence. I mean, the fight scenes are brutal, and I kind of feel like they're more realistically brutal than the MCU movies or Agents of SHIELD. They're low-down, dirty, drag-out fights where you hit someone over and over and see who goes down first. That's pretty real for a fight. They're small-scale, low stakes when impacting the multiverse, but high stakes on a personal level, and so they're more intimate. All in all, it's a different scale than MCU, and I like that they can do that.

We are so in sync with Daredevil, right down to the episodes watched. Yes, it's wonderful. Yes, MATT AND CLAIRE. I have not shut up about them to Yuul for days. Yes, holy crap the violence. I thought they couldn't top Healy's suicide but Fisk with Gideon Emery (the voice of Balthier and Fenris!) and the car door... yikes.

Yeah, everything about Matt and Claire's dynamic makes me so happy. I also like that she's sensible and good at her job and actually helpful. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Rosario Dawson is acting the hell out of her. (Then again, I have yet to see a single actor on that show that isn't knocking it out of the park. Even the kid playing young!Matt.) The chemistry between the two sizzles and the dialogue is believable and this is everything I want in a superhero romance, including the fact that being a superhero's lady sucks. Watching the episode switch between Fisk and Vanessa having a nice dinner in a lovely restaurant and poor Claire getting the crap kicked and/or scared out of her... it was very effectively done. UGH I LOVE THIS SHOW and I don't say that often!

I also really like Foggy and his dynamic with Matt. I keep comparing it to the film (at least the theatrical release) where Foggy was played as an incompetent lawyer who was only going along with Matt's idealism because he couldn't get a job anywhere else. Having them both be intelligent, good at their jobs and sharing the starting ideal of their practice works so much better.

I'm uncertain about Karen. She's yet to win me over, even if I do like bits and pieces of her story line.

Even Fisk is really well done. I'm legitimately interested in his courtship with Vanessa, which I did not think would be the case. I wouldn't say I ship it but the actors make it work and the exchanges sound natural, and I am definitely wanting to see where that plot thread goes, as she's his wife in the source canon.

I SPEWED WORDS AT YOU, I'm sorry. (I'm not.)

I HAVE SO MANY DAREDEVIL FEELINGS hello my name is yuul and daredevil is my fave marvel character and i've been reading his comics ever since childhood and still read them to this day and now i have a wonderful tv show to love!!

i'm really glad they chose to be so violent in this series if only because it wouldn't feel like daredevil if it wasn't so gritty and bloody and dark. it would've been like... deadpool without the r rating. i'm so amazed at how well the show runners captured the essence of miller's reinvented daredevil but also made it so it's not... as dark (because i can't imagine anyone sticking around to watch if all they saw was matt constantly failing). but really, they said they were basing the show off of the books of miller and bendis and boy, oh boy, can i see it.

unfortunately there is... one thing that really disappointed me but talking about it would be a spoiler so i'll just go on to say that besides the one thing, this show is perfect to me. they got the matt and foggy relationship down and i love what they're doing with karen. it's probably because i disliked her so greatly in the comics that it's refreshing to see this sort of take with her, where she's actively playing an important role, rather than her just constantly pitying matt in the background and talking about how sad and terrible it is that he's blind.

but yeah, huge approval from me. i can't wait to see what else netflix has in store for us because i now trust them with my life.
