As someone who learned English as a second language, I can tell you I run into this a lot. :/

It's a really easy mistake to make if you're not paying attention, but you don't expect to see it in books you check out of the library. Back in the day we used to have editors and proofreaders look over this stuff before publication... Le sigh.
