Holy crap the debate

Oh god it's happening, isn't it? There's going to be a debate. Part of my brain still can't even conceive of Donald Trump 'winning' (either the debate or the election) but for some reason it's a close race. What if he somehow gets a bump from this? What if she does any of a million things wrong, like be too condescending or get cornered on stupid scandals or fail to move the topic off herself or be too short or have a uterus?

The polls don't make me as anxious, because I know that national polling doesn't matter; only polls from the individual states are relevant. But this is the sort of event, especially this first debate, that can really have a lasting impression on people. Al Gore and his irritated sighing comes to mind...

I heard a podcast yesterday talking about the first Obama v Romney debate, and how Obama came prepared for the super-conservative Romney that won the primaries, and he floundered when Romney took a more moderate stance. People concluded in the first 15 minutes that Obama had "lost" and even though he did much better later, that was the narrative that played ever after.

It's all about to burst into flames, probably.
