Ode to my Computer
I sent my uncooperative laptop in to Hewlett-Packard for repair on Thursday, April 17th. Next day shipping, so they'd have gotten it by Friday afternoon. Then I go to the website on Sunday to check on when my order is due back -- and they tell me that it's already shipped. As a matter of fact, they tell me that it shipped back to me on Friday -- April 18th. I verified this with FedEx, as they quite cheerily informed me that my package was already in New York.
I came up with a list of possible explanations for this.
1. They received my computer, immediately began working on him, and had him repaired within a matter of hours and shipped out the same day they received him.
Likelihood: miniscule.
2. They received my computer, decided that if they hadn't fixed the problem the first time, they weren't going to be able to, and sent me a new laptop instead.
Likelihood: small.
3. They received my computer, began working on him in a reasonable amount of time, and had him ready for me 3-5 weekdays later. They then proceeded to use their time machine to send the laptop back in time so that they could send him out the same day they received him.
Likelihood: seems logical.
4. They received my computer, had an angry discussion amongst themselves about how many problems I've been having, and shipped back a technical support representative in a box to beat me about the head and shoulders with a rolled-up warranty agreement.
Likelihood: it's what I'D do.
I received the package yesterday evening... Yep. It's my computer alright. All my data's even still on him. He hasn't gone bright radioactive pink yet, but I don't trust him...
In anime news, I *heart* Get Backers so much, and Anime Empire rocks my socks. How did I survive before Anime Suki? Having finished the MAKUBEX arc now, I am more firmly convinced than ever that I adore everybody. It ended beautifully. I am going to gauge my eyes out if people start accusing MAKUBEX of being gay, though. There are so few straight men in the series -- leave them alone already. I will cry when the first Ginji/MAKUBEX fic appears. (And it will, because the gods of fandom don't like me that much.) That boy was having a moment full of shoujo bubbles with Sakura. Can't you people tell the difference between romantic moments and moments of emotional epiphany? MAKUBEX wasn't being converted to the homosexual side of the Force, he was realizing that he's not alone. Nobody respects this. Grr. Fandom makes me angry.
Of course, I'm not entirely unprejudiced here. I have another MAKUBEX/Sakura fic being written now -- I enjoy it already -- and it occurs to me that they're definitely up there with my favorite pairings for some reason I can not even begin to explain. I have more fics planned for them than for the threesome put together! ^_^
Speaking of the new fic...
"Why didn't you tell me about him?"
That voice was so cold, so disinterested, that she almost didn't think she was expected to answer. It was the winter in that tone that made her flinch, more than the request, and she wished with all her heart that he had never had reason to ask.
Cold like winter, dark like winter. It was shadowed in the vast room, the light of fading sunset barely visible through the slits in the blinds. It was even more shadowed where he was, alone and small in the center of the room, like a statue on a nightscape plain, still and firm and shrouded in darkness.
"Why did you never tell me about him?"
This time he turned to face her, and the dying rays of sunlight fell upon his silhouette, and she knew that he wanted an answer. But it was no longer expectation or fear that kept her silent, but despair.
His eyes were colder than his face. More than cold: dead. It was as if he couldn't muster up the heart to be stirred to an emotion, as if he didn't have the will to care. She had seen him with those dead eyes before, but not in years, so many years in which she had dared to think that perhaps he had learned to follow his human heart instead of his head -- his brilliant, analytic, inspiring mind. A brain was nothing more than a computer in the end.
MAKUBEX was called the Electronic Brain of Infinite Castle, and his expression was one a computer might wear. Sakura, who had never been afraid of him, cowered in that impassive regard now. She was glad she had instinctively knelt after greeting him; she felt that she was transparent to him enough without swaying and shaking like a battered leaf in the harsh, ice-laden wind.
"Why?" he asked again.
I dunno, I just like it. ^__^ You'd think from the setup that I'd be making him out to be the Bringer of Doom and Destruction, but I actually already like Kiyoshi a lot. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about him, though (sorry -- your dream girl is already spoken for, by a 17-year-old boy desperately pretending that he's one of his computers so as to not be too obvious about his jealousy) because I want him to have a happy ending already.
And on two final notes: Most importantly, why haven't you (yes, you) joined the QPQ RPG yet? I know you can read, and if you can write, too, you've got all the necessary skills! Secondly -- if you're ever in a position to read about Koori no Mamono no Monogatari, do so. I am shamelessly pimping this series to everyone, because Wild is sodamncool. (Now I want to model Jonathon after Wild, because I know that Sasha would love him to death... Poor Sasha. ^^ )

Running all the way, breath coming fast, but she had to run. She'd done nothing but run ever since hearing of the summon. Couldn't stop running, had to get there now, had to get there before someone said something that everyone would regret...
"There's a newcomer," the messenger had said. "He started a fight with the entry guards. He wants to see you."
So she'd been running, because she knew; even though she hadn't seen him or heard of him or thought of him in a decade, she knew somehow that it was him. And he had the power to destroy everything with only a few simple words...

The doors were already closed when she got there, she nearly threw herself against them to get inside. A crowd turned faces to her -- curious, accusing, eager. Everyone was here, already, she was late, too late. She could see them, facing off across the stairs in the distance.
She was worried, so worried, as they stared at each other without moving and she cluttered up the stairs, feeling like an entire herd of thundering horses all on her own. They looked up at her noisy entrance, and their faces smoothed instantly.
"There you are, Sakura..."

"There you are, Sakura," the boy she had devoted her entire adult life to had said, his voice cold like winter, disinterested. Uninvolved and uncaring. "You've kept your fiancé waiting."
