Reluctant Concession

So it's over. It's over, and it almost feels like I'll never be able to look at America the same way again. Last time it was easy to say that it was a fluke, that he only squeaked into office because of tricks -- and he did -- but this year he won with a majority. I have never been so disgusted at being an American before: not because he won, not because I don't like the country; because the average American is apparently so blind to the issues, so completely reliant on blind faith or mindless fear or misguided ideas, that those of us who realize that a "flip-flopping" accusation is absurd are in the minority.

I really thought that after all the scandals (real scandals, political scandals, not lame personal scandals like Clinton) and his incompetencies and his glaring losses in the presidential debates, people would come to realize that they needed someone better than him. That after the way he belittled not only foreigners but his own countrymen (how about those pansy French, huh? who wants to see some Massachusetts liberal in the White House, since now being either of those things are apparently character flaws? that guy's a trial lawyer and we all know lawyers are scum!) they would realize that this man is not a leader; he's a small-minded greedy corporate dog who will attack blindly at anyone who opposes him, whether it be the French or someone from Massachusetts or a liberal or a lawyer.

And he has helped to inflict those opinions on the rest of the sheep that comprise Red America, too.

(Depressing Edit: According to exit polls, 80% of people who thought the economy was the most important factor of the election voted for Kerry. 70-someodd-% of the people who thought the war was the most important factor of the election voted for Kerry. But the majority of the voters who swung the election voted en masse for George W. Bush, and the issue they thought was most important? Morals. Because whether you have jobs, or whether your children die in foreign wars that promote terrorism, isn't as important as whether or not your candidate is a Bible-thumper. It was the personal differences, and not the politics, that decided this election. What is wrong with this country.)

Still, everyone who voted -- even and especially those of you who weren't going to vote, for whatever reason changed your mind -- thank you guys. Whether or not your candidate was elected, you let your opinion be heard.

Whether or not Bush will listen is another thing, because he has won, and now chances are he will do whatever he wants, regardless of your opinions, just like he's been doing for the last few years.

This is probably the last thing I have to say about this topic, although you can read over here for more on it. I'm sure I'll be keeping up with politics and I will grit my teeth and gradually come to loathe being an American over the next four years -- even if/when I relocate I can't get rid of that -- and I will have Things To Say, but this topic, and the apparent devolving of the American populace, breaks my heart, and so I will end it here. I am going to take a nap now.

*hug* Thank you for expressing it so well for the rest of us. We will always know we aren't to blame for whatever horrible things happen.
