On "To Reign In Hell"

Good book. Interesting setup. I liked Lucifer and Satan a great deal, especially Satan, as really the whole story is his slow evolution from indecisive (after, apparently, Lilith broke up with him for being too impulsive) back into acting on his instinct, because indecision never got him anything but grief. I did feel sorry for Yaweh and Michael -- not Raphael, though -- although I didn't care much for Yeshuah except for occasionally pitying him. Zaphkiel towards the end was interesting, he's a clever one, and I wholeheartedly enjoyed Mephistopholes after Ariel's death. (Hahahaha, take THAT, Abdiel!) It hurt me when the misunderstandings got resolved but there was no real way to resolve the problems that had already begun except to finish out the war, and I enjoyed the final development of Earth and the characterization angelic battle over that territory. The misunderstandings, and Abdiel, were really teeth-gnashingly frustrating, but what are you going to do?

I would have enjoyed this book a lot more, however, if literally every major plot event didn't rely so very heavily on the fact that whenever anything happens, the angels involved have to walk around travelling slooooooowly over the landscape of Heaven on foot. By the tenth time a major plot event happened because of random people encountering and/or missing one another on the fucking road, I was sick of it. And sometimes it was just ridiculous: "I sensed someone over here ten minutes ago, and they just left, so I will follow them, and we will all walk along this road without seeing each other for days, and then they will get to their destination and talk and leave again before I can catch up with them, and their decisions there will affect my whole future but I JUST missed them."

This entire plotline is one great big, "Oh, you JUST missed talking to the guy who could've solved all your problems."

Still I enjoyed it, and heart [livejournal.com profile] anoma for recommending it. (John, what did you think?)

Hey, never let it be said that frustrating didn't have its own charm. XD I'd have put the book down if it got TOO frustrating. The frustrating was quite balanced out by the characterization and the unique slant, so I'm happy. ^_^
