Between writing this post on the train and getting home, I wrote a fanfic

I watched the first few episodes of sCRYed again while traveling to and from Boston, and hot damn. I remembered loving it, but I had forgotten how GOOD it gets by episode four (poor Alicia, we've been telling her this for two years now -- she and Sam weren't impressed by the first episode and stopped watching, which I understand if not personally agree with -- but then, Alicia DOES like the terrible manga, so she should've doubted her premature judgment any way you look at it XD ), and all the reasons why it's so good.

((No, really, I mean terrible. Did anyone see that thing? "My balls! You're breaking my balls!"))

I forgot how much I love Mimori for not being Relena, even though it looked like she would be. I forgot how much I love Kazuma for being the happy-go-lucky half-animal brawler that he is. I forgot how much I love bossy little Kanami and her dream device -- Sherrice and her ability to flip from perky to menacing in .02 seconds if you're Mimori and rivaling her for Ryuhou -- Asuka and his first-half drama whore-ness --Kimishima for being such a great friend. I forgot how much I love the terrible jazzy music.

I forgot all the reasons why Straight Cougar is absolutely. awesome. Damn you, Jason.

This is a damn good show. And it has one of the highest death rates of major much-loved protagonists that I've ever encountered, outside of, say, CLAMP, or other serials of the Rocks Fall variety.

Tangentially - I want to write a drabblefic now where Straight Cougar, the man who restructures matter to make his car go as fast as physically possible, goes out into Lost Ground, plainclothes, and he meets Kimishima, the man who is in love with his rinkydink jeep/motorcycle/vehicle-of-the-day/etc. Testosterone ensues.

I caught the first episode on CN.

It's actually surprisingly good. I mean, really surprisingly good. They have old man voices that sound like older men, and I'm not offended by any of the male voices so far. The female voices suck (although Mimori didn't even have one line in the part of the episode I saw -- she just had a gasp -- but I didn't like the gasp!) but they always do. Have I ever heard a female voice actor in a standard anime who doesn't suck?

The exception to all of the above is Ryuhou. Oh god. His seiyuu is Midorikawa Hikaru and, okay, he's famous for his nasal voice. But that doesn't mean he's not a good voice actor. He's a voice acting god. You can't replace him by taking the most nasal nerd on the face of the planet and sticking him in a booth with a microphone! It's baaaad.

But the translation seems to be smoothed over enough to make it flow, and most of the voice actors are good. I'm glad it's on TV. Maybe more fans!

Just... please don't give Mimori a Kagome voice... I just know it will foster more irrational hatred of her.

I wonder if the fandom still hates Mimori? I'm such a Ryuhou/Mimori fangirl.

Hikaru Midorikawa is my favorite voice actor ever. Ever I say! And not just because he voices one of my favorite characters ever. *cough*icon*cough*

Zelgadis FTW *heart*

Yeah, though, he's one of my all-time favorites too. I really like him as Ryuhou in sCRYed -- he's so perfect for the character. ^^ And not just because Ryuhou is an older, more tragic, less Gundam Wing-ed Heero.

I'm not a huge fan of Scryed. ^_^;; I've watched a fair bit of the anime and I own all the manga and it's not bad, but meh.

The manga is terrible.

Terrible.

If you don't like the anime, that makes me sad. It's one of my few favorites. ^^ There are only two anime series that I ever made websites for, and sCRYed was number two.

The manga was ~hilarious~. I bought it at Oni-con because it was so utterly cracktastic that it had me rolling. The anime...it's not that I hate it, but it's just that it didn't float my boat. :)

*has officially returned to anime geekdom*

At least it's not total Lost geekdom.

*plants the seeds of malice and EVIL in you and shares some with your muse, too*

I didn't watch the whole dub but it was enough to convert my friend into a s.cry.ed fan so it's saying a lot in my book. ^^;

People don't like Mimori? I've never actually stepped my virtual foot into the s.cry.ed fandom so I wouldn't know. I'm actually surprised and not surprised at the same time. Mimori wasn't a bad character but I can see how she gets cursed in fandom. There's always one girl in shounen anime that gets hate from all the fans. But I liked her. I thought she was intelligent and non-stalkie, which is always a plus. Always thought she deserved better than Ryuhou too.

Cougar is so cool. OMG! I loved him instantly. I wanna see the series again. Between my friend and now you.... I needs s.cry.ed!

Oh, and I still have your s.cry.ed manga now that I think about it. It's under my bed. ^^;;; Do you want it?

Do I want it... XD I don't know either.

I'm desperately, desperately hoping they don't give Cougar a lousy voice actor. ;_; HOW is anyone going to pull off our favorite speed demon in English?

Yeah, Mimori is not had fans of. I suppose it's because she's the Goody-Goody Female with Romantic Interest in the Stolid Hero. She interferes with the [LACK OF] potential yaoi [OMG PLEASE STOP SLASHING RYUHOU AND KAZUMA IT MAKES TEH BABY JESUS CRY]. But I always really liked her -- she was smart and never made herself a hypocrite, not even (especially not) if her Romantic Interest tried to use emotional blackmail to convince her not to do what she believed was right. She was also sort of fun. How many other goody-goodies have playful banter like Mimori had, with random co-workers and Cougar and the like? ^_^

I think a lot of people actually don't notice until they think about it that Ryuhou is a total. jerk. So it's easy to sneer at Mimori for not listening to him when she gets in trouble.

I like Ryuhou/Mimori because of its potential, not the way it was in the series. XD I also love Cougar/Mimori, of course. Because... Cougar can have whatever he wants.

*infects you*

...do you think you can sell the manga? XD

[identity profile] yami-chan.livejournal.com 2005-06-05 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Cougar’s voice actor isn't so bad actually. At least he can speak fast and I think he projects him the right way.

I completely agree with you about Mimori. Yeah she was a goodie-goodie but at least she wasn't annoying. And I never thought she interfered with anything, not just because Ryuhou/Kazuma is impossible but because she didn't... I donno, do anything besides worry about him and try to be friends again. I always thought that's what she wanted--to have her childhood friend back. Also after all the shit starts to hit the fan, I always thought she put her feelings for him on the back burner and worried about making things to turn out all right without him getting himself killed.

Because... Cougar can have whatever he wants.

YES, so true!

And I could probably sell it off ebay or something? But I don't have all that ebay stuff set up (don't even know how to really use it). So if you have an ebay account, why don't you put it up for sell? I'll just mail it to whoever wins it. Unless you have a better idea? Book Off will probably take it now that I think about it. But the price they may rip you off. Kino? I don’t know if they accept used books.

*deploys*
Now, quiet you. He's fine. Taking a nap. He didn't finish reading his book after all.

*Breaks down wailing*
IT'S NOT MY FAULT!

But anyway, I don't know if I could take the emotional rollercoaster of watching Scryed again. I mean, it's HEAVY, HEAVY stuff. And, you can't afford to like anyone. Even the mains. Too painful.

It is sooooooo your fault he's dead! AND YOU KILLED LULU!!!!!!

I think that the big fun of watching sCRYed again is that I forgot all the delightful little things, or how they shaped the critical moments -- like Kanami's dreams, or that beautiful moment where Cougar and Kazuma see each other for the first time when Kazuma is escaping from HOLD.

(*split second -- everything stops -- staring*
Kazuma: You!
Cougar: Kazuho?!
Kazuma: IT'S KAZUMA.)

...everything involving Cougar, really.

Because yes, the end, with the dying and the stress and the unhappy everything, that really really sucks. I think the happiest moment of the series was, like... the Alter squirrels. They were cute and fuzzy. But getting to the horror was so much fun and so well-done and you had to love everyone [they were planning on murdering]...

Argh.

ALTER SQUIRRELS.
