She started early today

My sister and I have an eye doctor's appointment. Key words there being DOCTOR and APPOINTMENT. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that they expect to see insurance.

So I casually remind my sister that they'll need to see insurance over breakfast today, so she can't forget to bring her card.

Ali flips out. She doesn't have a card. She never had a card. Mom has the card. Why would Mom have given her the card -- besides that it's common sense and something Mom did to me the moment I left for college? So Ali is throwing a fit and she calls Mom and whines and complains about both of us, but I have to go on the phone (so she can yell at me to get a job at Home Depot for two weeks) and Mom bitches me out for not telling her what the woman who called to confirm the appointment said.

It's not like she asked us to bring her a shrubbery, okay? She called to confirm an appointment; I said sure, we remember, and then we hung up. She asked us to bring our up-to-date insurance cards; I said sure, we're not stupid, we'll bring our insurance. But apparently I'm not capable of taking messages, and the real message should have gone "First I got a phone call from the eye doctor's secretary, she said hello, I said hi, she said this is Dr. Zweibel's office, I said oh hi, she said..."

Why didn't Mom give her her security card? Ali's a whimsically vindictive fuckhead but she's not retarded, she's not going to eat it or color on it or anything, and if she's dumb enough to lose it she deserves whatever suffering she has to go through. Is it ridiculous of me to assume that I'm not the only child who has to have insurance if she gets hit by a bus? Are they going to see Ali's earrings and go, "Oh, she's POPULAR, she MUST be insured," and just take her in on faith?

But it's not Mom's fault for not realizing this, because Mom has a foolproof system in place. In it, she keeps "copies" of our insurance cards "on file" at our local doctors'. This never works. Every time in the last few years I can remember where we haven't brought our cards they've asked to see them, and we have to convince them to take the ones on file.

So why should Mom have thought about it, just because she withholds Ali's insurance card for no especial reason? It's not like she's responsible for it or anything.
