Get Backers! The Soul-Consuming Obsession That Is!

Okay. It's been a while since I wrote in here. It's totally not my fault. Blame it on ZERO Mark 1, who hated me and had to be sent away, and then the fact that I was without reliable Internet for a while, and then the fact that when I got back ZERO Mark 2, who seems reasonably fond of me, I was consumed by Planet Ladder and Get Backers and disenchantment with Scryed.

The fifth volume of Planet Ladder came out recently, and I keep turning pages and going, "I knew it. SO COOL." Because even though I knew certain things right away, like Kaguya and Kagami being siblings (you hear me, budding fandom?! she's his KID SISTER! I KNEW she was! you can't make them date each other, okay?!), it was all still handled in ways that made me squeal over the shininess. I mean, yes, Bambi's kind of EVIL now, but she's still flamingly lesbian and in love with Kaguya and has a really twisted Bambi-logic about it. And Laguna and Kura are TOTALLY wanna-be lovers, but Laguna had this whole tragic thing going on, and even though he walked willingly to his death, he kept a sense of humor about it. He was SO SWEET.
Kura: They'll kill you if you go back.
Laguna: I know.
Kura: *startled* You're a fool!
Laguna: *smiling* You did not realize this from the beginning?

I want him to live happily ever after with Kura. *sob* But nooooo, he goes home and gets killed by the people he loves so much. I'm frigging PROUD of Kura for wiping them out now.

Kura proceeds to go home to Geo, marries a princess who they tell you looks different from other girls from Geo and who actually looks a suspicious amount like Laguna, and genuinely mourns when she dies. I liked her. She never got a name. ~_~ And, and, and then things start BLOWING UP.

Oh, and Kagami seems kinda... evil to me now. But no less amazingly, amazingly cool.

As for Scryed... Well, I've got the manga now. I was reading through it, and it just seems... icky. Like, there's all sorts of massive boobtacular women, especially Sherrice, who also gets all manner of panty shot and tentacle scenes et al. And by the way, Eternal Devote requires Sherrice to take all her clothes off, straddle a half-naked Ryuhou's hips, their crotches to glow, and both of them to cry out in... joy, one supposes. That hurts me deeply. I'm sorry, guys, that's just not what I'm reading for. Asuka's girlfriend doesn't come back (if she ever existed at all!) but on the other hand, Cougar stays dead. This is a brutal disappointment, especially since he doesn't seem to have even gotten his cool stuff going. Then I'm all like, "I can't even FIND Mujou Kyouji in this mess." And there's this random new character who really, really wishes he were a girl, and in the end decides to become a transvestite and marry this other guy who looks like he is ten feet of solid muscle. Or maybe those are muscle-shaped bricks.

Sherrice gets Ryuhou in the end. Mimori and Ryuhou stand there and stare at each other for like, ten minutes, leaving Sherrice feeling a little out of place. And then both of them think, "I really loved you." Mimori gives the pendant to Sherrice and wishes her the best, and then just walks away. Ryuhou puts his arm around Sherrice's waist and they leave. I'm like, whatthefuck?

Everything I liked about Scryed is kinda... trivialized and/or jilted in the manga, as far as I can tell. I'm very disappointed. The art isn't even good -- I don't like the style at all. I think I'll stick to the anime if I plan on being interested in it.

But you know what? I'm not. Because now I have Get Backers. ^_^

What do I love about GB? That's too extensive a question to ask. What DON'T I love about GB? *pause* Maybe... HEVN's boobtacular personality. We like to say that HEVN is just a carrying case for Left and Right. Don't get me wrong, HEVN's kinda cool, but you think she wouldn't be wearing a strap of leather under her immense mammaries and a teensy little miniskirt when walking into a lawless den of brutality and nighmares where you're liable to get mugged, beated, or killed at any street corner. And Himiko is kind of sub-cool for the standard. I like HEVN better for some reason.

Pairings? Why, thank you for asking. And if you want to know why there are so many gay pairings here, it's because Get Backers is composed of 90% gay pairings. I swear to God. They're not established, but they're so heavily hinted at that even the staunchest of our male friends was forced to acknowledge that, okay, [fillintheblank] is really gay. There's only one straight guy among the heroes AND the villains. We were talking about putting him in a wildlife preserve as an endangered species. There's a couple of bisexual guys, and a couple of ASEXUAL guys (I'm sorry, Akabane just doesn't get to have sex -- ever)...

Ban/Ginji: Well, DUH. If you don't see this pairing, you haven't seen the SHOW. They're our heroes, and Ginji worships Ban-chan, which is a good thing because Ban is the one with all the brains of the Get Backers. (It's their initials! See! G and B! Hah! They're such dorks.) Whenever they are separated, half of their thought processes appear to be, "I want to see [insert other guy's name here] quickly..." or "where are you, [insert other guy's name here]..." Still, there are other pairings I like for these two, although you'll only see one of them here because the others are just gratuitous. ^^

Jubei/Kazuki:

No, wait, maybe I'm moving too fast.

Kazuki: Kazuki is gayer than a whole flock of flamingoes. Queer as a three-dollar bill. When Kazuki was a little girl he wore pink women's kimono with all the fluffy little extras that make it for females; he had long unbound brown hair that was rich and thick and so very girly; he admits that he and his family did this on PURPOSE. Thus, we call recollections of his youth "flashbacks to when Kazuki was a little girl". Today he does not wear ladies' kimono, because he wears jeans... and a white wisp of shirt that has no shoulders. It's kind of like one of those fluffy white artist's shirts, only it's missing the half that goes above your biceps. His hair is down to his ankles, although tied around in interesting styles. He fights with string, is just a little bit mentally unstable, and used to be a leader of a gang of thugs called "Elegance". Only Kazuki would name a gang "Elegance"... and only he could make them scary.

Jubei/Kazuki: Jubei is voiced by Koyasu Takehito, which should give you an idea of his personality. I hate that man because he's everywhere, and usually hate the characters he plays because they're universally emotional cardboard cut-outs, but Jubei is an exception because he and Kazuki make me squeal like a fangirl. Jubei's family have been physicians/guardians to Kazuki's for 500 years, and when Jubei was a kid he took this very seriously, like every twenty seconds, to get inordinately close to Kazuki to see if he had scratches or whatnot. Apparently, even once Kazuki politely told him that he WASN'T a little girl, sorry to disappoint, this didn't deter Jubei, who has said something like four times that I've seen "I was born to protect you". The way they glow around each other would be freaky if I didn't love them to death.

Shido/Madoka: Oh my GOD, they are SO CUTE. Shido thinks that he's Trowa, and he kind of is (down to the lions!) but his particular violinist is a rich GIRL named Madoka, and they are so so so adorable. Madoka-chan is smart as well as sweet -- the kind of girl who won't give up on what she wants no matter what, and who will blush cutely whenever someone hints that she might've fallen for Shido, and punch a man in the privates if he hurts her friends. ("He did have a weakness after all!") And she's blind. You GO, Madoka-chan! Shido getting all awkward because he doesn't want to hurt her feelings even though they're enemies is just... overdose of cuteness. (There's this one scene in the manga where she asks him to attend one of her concerts and he politely refuses. She looks sad. Twenty seconds pass before he caves in, unable to help himself.) So even though Emishi wants Shido, he can't have him. Shido's straight, and he's got his little girlfriend. ^_^

Ban/Clayman: Because Clayman is DAMN COOL, and she knows how to deflate Ban's ego and/or manipulate him to her cause. I have every intention of writing them a fanfic. It's all because of this one scene where she charged them a bill for damages done to her studio while on a job for her, and the charge was 300,000 yen (Ginji couldn't even comprehend this amount of money; he had to ask Natsumi, who is not much smarter and whose only comment was, "That's a lot, isn't it?") and Ban immediately called Clayman up on his cel phone to yell at her and try and get her to drop some of the charges. She'd just gotten out of the shower, wasn't even fully dressed, and was not ruffled in the least; she sort of prodded him gently into agreeing to pay the full amount, and then put down the receiver to listen to him yell from across the room while she dried her hair. ^_^ I LIKE their dynamic. I wish I knew her real name.

Akabane: --is the coolest thing ever in the history of ever. But he doesn't get to have sex. Ever. I'm sorry. That's what we in the business like to call "bad touch".

MAKUBEX/Sakura: Um... I think someone should hit me for this one. Sakura is 23 and MAKUBEX is 14. But... but... But I think they'd be cute together. ;_; Besides, Sakura is devoted to MAKUBEX in much the same way that Jubei is devoted to Kazuki, so... Besides, I think MAKUBEX has a crush on her anyway. I'm already writing a fic for them.

Oh, and: "You figure out what Sakura feels about MAKUBEX and I'll figure out what kind of present he gets on his eighteenth birthday, desshou ne? ^^ "

I love Neesama.

(If I respond to this, like, three times, it's LJ's fault and TOTALLY not mine. O_o)

I forgive you for venturing into my home turf. ^_~ I like talking! *too much, really*

Takehito Koyasu started annoying me because he was everywhere. O_o I couldn't watch anything without him having at least a bit part. It literally reached the point where we were thinking about making an anime review site where we'd have the header of every review with a genre check, a total episode check, a Koyasu check, etc. ^_^ And then I started thinking that all his characters were really similar -- like, Aya, Zechs, Hotohori, Touga, etc can all be summarized with either "angsty" or "jerk" or both. ^_^;; Thus "cardboard Koyasu character"... I thought I'd hate him just because he fit so neatly onto the angsty half of the cardboard.

Honestly, though, I love Jubei. ^_^ I love the fact that he's got this deeply ingrained samurai ethic and he used to be such a happy kid and he's always been desperately in love -- I mean, very close to Kazuki. I like watching him visibly shutter himself away whenever someone talks about how he hurt Kazuki, and then sloooooowly learn to smile when he starts hanging out with Kazuki again. ^^

But Kazuki's probably my favorite. ^_^

I've seen the fic you referred to. *sweatdrop* I think that the author WAS pretending that Kazuki is female. ^^ And it wasn't exactly the best fic... >D Neesama and I shall do our best to fill the gaps! She's already writing a lemon from Jubei's POV. *snicker* Gooooo, hot springs!

As for Akabane... ^___^ Yeah, I have to admit you're right. If he thought Ginji would react in ways that would amuse him, and/or bleed copiously, he wouldn't mind terribly. "Bad touch." ^_~

Madoka's 17; Shido's 21. It's not so bad compared to Sakura at 23 and MAKUBEX at 14. O_o I agree though that he's much beyond his age, probably because he's such a genius... Anyway, I just really adore Madoka, and she's the only person who can make Shido get all awkward and cute, so I'm all for them. ^__^ Emishi seemed very one-sided, but he's a womanizer anyway; he'll recover quickly enough. And it'd be terribly easy for someone to write a fic where Shido and Madoka's thing doesn't work out somehow and he recognizes that Emishi is faithful to him. I don't know if I can see it, though... Emishi just seems too extremely random, I suppose. ^_^

I like Sakura a LOT. ^^ I don't know why. *flees, having talked too much*

*nods about the KT thing* Yeah. But he's done some really weird roles, too! For instance, in games like Persona, he did yeah, angsty Tatsuya, but you should at least listen to the "Persona Ondo" he sang at least once. It's worth it, really. It "breaks" Koyasu-sama's fans. XD I'm regretful that people can't really remember the "silly" roles he did, like Chou Koumei in Houshin Engi, Himejima in the HanaKimi drama tracks, and yes, singing the Persona Ondo -- they are all overtly gay gay gay characters. If it weren't for his gay roles, I doubt I'd have that much respect for him left. But he sang the ondo, and for that I will love him forever. ^_^;

Waahh, was all this Jubei suffering shown in ep. 19? I have to wait until after spring break before I can start downloading episodes again. -.- Jubei is really awfully cute! I don't see him as the angsty, cold, has-no-feelings like Aya type of character... of which I am very grateful. (Hated Aya with a passion.) Do you know which ones are the Jubei/Kazuki manga volumes? >_> (Yes, Ban, I love you! I'm sure you have your spotlights in those volumes, too! XD)

And I take back everything I said about Madoka, because I thought she was 12. O_O I suppose Emishi being Shido's old playmate would work. *laughs* I still have a hanging suspicion on Shido's sexuality, though... especially since everyone else is so gay. ^^;; Without having seen ep. 19, though, I'm still going to say I have no doubt Emishi is really, really, gay. You know what they say about womanizers! *shifty eyes*

What can I say? Akabane is my Very Special Friend. *snickers* We all know he secretly wants to be Ginji-kun's Very Special Friend. Poor, poor, Ginji. >D

I want to read this Jubei lemon when it's done. Please don't make me beg. :D It's kind of a relief to run into other Jubei/Kazuki fans since most of my friends think it's really boring compared to Ban/Ginji. ^^;

I bow to your superior knowledge of Koyasu. >D If I'd seen more of those roles, I might've had a different opinion. What he did to Weiss to promote Aya still hurts me, though. *twitch* I didn't like Aya and looking at how all the character designs for EVERYONE except Aya were butchered... Gluhen makes my brain ache. *siiiigh* Anyway, I'm glad we agree about Aya, because that's one of my stronger opinions. O_o

Anyway, you can watch Jubei angst subtly all throughout the arc. From the moment he gets told he has to kill Kazuki, and every time Kazuki's name is mentioned after Jubei thinks he's killed him, he hides completely behind his sunglasses and his collar so that you can't see his expression at all. Normally you can see his eyes through his sunglasses, and his mouth as he talks... It was really telling to me. ^_^ And aside from the extended flashback to when they were kids (SO GAY -- I mean, cute) Kazuki spends half the episode reaffirming that his ambiguous feelings for Jubei haven't changed after all this time, and Stuff Happens, and Jubei is smiling by the end of the episode. Albeit a strained smile. He was kind of in pain at the time. ^^

For maximum Jubei/Kazuki, I recommend tank 14 -- that's the one where Ban and Ginji wind up at a hot springs resort and come across Jubei and Kazuki staying together up in the mountains. Even Ginji thinks they're really gay. ^_^ JUBEI actually initiates all of the warmfuzzy moments between him and Kazuki while they're, um, naked in the hot springs. Their battle is either in tank 8 or 9 -- the ones I don't have *SOB* -- and Jubei also has an extremely cool moment or two with Sakura and MAKUBEX in 10. Since Kazuki "dies" in tank 15 (...must... know... what happens...) one imagines that Jubei found his way into the volumes after that to demand to know where he's gone and what's happened to him and how they're going to get him back.

Tank 15 is where we learn that Kazuki is, or at least was, probably a bona-fide lunatic. O_o

I don't blame you for being dramatically opposed to Shido/Madoka if you thought she was 12. O_o That would be... well, I don't think I could've supported that in all decency, because Madoka is a sheltered little rich girl and MAKUBEX is a streetsmart genius who is mature for his age.

...even though the age difference would be the same. *sweatdrop* MAKUBEX is a liiiiittle closer to legal than she would've been....

And on the Emishi note, he IS really, really gay. >D Now that you mention it, the woman he was trying to get some with was REN (Ren, the 13-year-old granddaughter of the pharmacist!)... even though HEVN was right there. ^_^ Maybe he wanted Ren because she's easy to mistake for a guy. ^_~

Poor Ginji indeed. >D And poor you. No worries; Jubei/Kazuki is my favorite pairing, and Neesama's favorite pairing, and I promise I'll let you know when her lemon is done. As soon as I finish reading it. ^_^

Don't say that to an Aya fan, they get scary. ^^;; Have you seen the B Side Manga?

I don't think so... Is that Weiss? I've only seen Assassin and White Shaman for that. (*drools* Pretty art~)

And I humbly bow before your Aya-fanness. ^^ I happen to dislike the guy, but I'm not going to say that hundreds of thousands of fangirls are wrong... and risk getting set upon by a lynch mob. ^_~

Errr I am not an Aya fan. Did I give that impression. Gomen Gome. Kenkun desu yo. It's just you mention how nice Aya character design looks to an Aya fan and umm they get scary. ^^;; Oh, no Aya's new character design is bad very bad. *Sighs* Personally, I think the Yoji and Crawford fans have more to complain about...

Anyway, I have a few links to the new manga. 4 new characters ^^ Want them? Though, if you are a Yoji or Omi fav, let me warn you, so far they have yet to show. I think they're upset with Aya's seiyuu right now... Please forgive me for not remembering the god of Seiyuu's name :P *Heavy on the Sarcasm*

I've only seen two episodes of Gluhen, and yeah, it seems like he's trying to pull in more Aya fans. ^_^; I think it's working, too! I used to loathe Aya, but he's getting better in Gluhen. None of that grouchy, cold, unfeeling cardboard character. *laughs* Ken doesn't look so bad, though...? Yohji, though -- I hated him, too (all right, I admit it! I hated Weiß and adored Schwarz. >D), but I do feel sorry for him in Gluhen. Wow.

Re: Jubei/Kazuki -- that is so sweet. ;_; I want this episode! Bleh. I'll have to satisfy myself by ganking vol. 9 this weekend, which is probably where I want to start, since. Um. I want to skip the introductory parts and I want to hurry through the MakubeX arc. Is Kagami anywhere in that episode? I do like him... I have a tendency to like really minor/flat characters. I liked Jubei and Kagami before I knew either was going to play a somewhat bigger role than expected. ^^;

Kazuki dies? O_O; I must have this. I need to know what happened. I'm spoiling myself with scans, but no matter. *howls* Is it true that he's permanently (?) blind in the manga after the fight with Kazuki, then? But anyrate, I want the onsen tank, where Kazuki goes, "Jubei <3 <3 <3" All right, so they're actually dots, not hearts, but you can practically see the hearts. *_* And Jubei does say "My Kazuki!" or something! At least, in the Chinese scans I saw. ^_^

Maybe he wanted Ren because she's easy to mistake for a guy. ^_~

*rolls* That is too true. Too true! XD I have nothing more to say on this.

I really have to get the manga, because there are characters the anime hasn't introduced yet that I really want to meet, thanks to that relationship chart posted at [livejournal.com profile] getbackers. I guess it's true that Kagami doesn't stay there very long...? He doesn't seem to fit anywhere, at least.

I couldn't see Shido as a pedophile, so that explains the initial resistance to Shido/Madoka. ^_^;;

I haven't seen Kagami at all. Apparently, he's there in front of the door to the room where MAKUBEX is waiting, and then he just steps aside and lets them go in and isn't seen again as far as I can tell. O_o

Kazuki doesn't quite die in 15. He has a confrontation with Toshiki, who along with Jubei was his second-in-command when Kazuki was the leader of Fuuga, the nastiest and strongest gang in Mugenjou before the formation of VOLTS. A bunch of unspecified things happen: I think Jubei and Toshiki had a duel that affected all of Mugenjou and which was later called "Hell Night", and then Toshiki vanished. But now Toshiki is here, and powerful enough to kick Kazuki's ass. Ginji spent the previous like two chapters getting horrible premonitions that Kazuki is going to die horribly; he panics when he can't get to where Toshiki and Kazu-chan are fighting, and he KNOWS that Kazu-chan is in agonizing pain, but when he gets there, Toshiki distracts him. When he looks back, Kazuki and Toshiki are both gone, and Ginji can no longer feel Kazuki's presence. That part of the story ends... and Kazuki doesn't come back. Tank 15 ends with Ginji unable to take it any more and insisting that he's going to look for Kazuki even if he has to do it alone. (Of course, because he's Ginji, everyone comes with him. ^^ )

I'm sure Kazuki isn't dead... But something weird is definitely going on. O_o I'm very upset I don't have the next volume or two.

And Jubei isn't permanently blind either. The reason he and Kazuki are at the onsen is because between the Fuuchouin clan and the Kakei clan they know enough secret techniques to cure any disease known in modern Japan, including whatever's wro

Koyasu? Gay characters?
