Nobody servants

Random thoughts on servant Nobodies. This is all ridiculous amounts of conjecture, 99.9% imagination, and I encourage feedback and opinions! (Especially ye of [livejournal.com profile] ruinreverse, who are welcome to chime in with your impressions of your character's servants.)

I: Sorcerers
Equally male and female. People who used to be take-charge, leaders, become Sorcerers when their hearts are stolen. They tend to have a certain amount of authority and are relentlessly loyal. They may have small hobbies that they indulge on the side but they enjoy working, including the vicious parts of working. I think they think they are the bestest Nobody servants, working for the bestest Nobody, and thus they are somewhat more elitist than the others. Sometimes they're given a few loose Nobodies, usually Dusks although occasionally some higher-ranking ones like Snipers or Monks to attend them in tasks like patrolling.

They are still and serene, drift. They have a very piercing stare and tend to believe in personal space.

(My internal Nobodies seem to feel like being made a Sorcerer is somehow one of the worst possible fates for someone you like.)

II: Snipers
Largely male. People who used to be good-natured and self-assured and maybe a bit smugly mischievous make good Snipers. They enjoy making their own fun -- also known as "patrol can be fun if you make a game of seeing how high into the air you can shoot that Shadow before it fades into darkness". They're social but take their jobs seriously, and make excellent guards if you don't mind their entertainment. The majority is male because men are more likely to consider "inventing new kinds of casual violence" amusement.

They get extremely fidgety and love to port around dizzyingly.

(Somebodies who might make good Snipers: Cid.)

III: Dragoons
Equally male and female. People who used to take themselves too seriously be prickly and straightforward often become Dragoons. They are pragmatic and businesslike, don't like playing games or experimenting. They deal best in familiar situations or when the possibilities have already been thought out. They don't usually associate with other ranks, but sometimes they can't help but volunteer their superior opinions on things.

They are extremely tall when standing upright and milling about on the ground, and generally have two postures: standing rigid or leaning on lance.

(This group is particularly changeable, I think.)

IV: Alchemists
Equally male and female. If you enjoyed research or intellectual pursuits in life, this is the rank for you. They're relatively friendly and do usually socialize outside their ranks, when they socialize, but the moment something interesting to study comes along, don't expect to hold their attention. They seem to love tampering with things and seeing what results almost more than they like the scientific methodology or discovery of anything, and the only thing that will keep them from it is usually having a direct order not to tamper with something.

Like the Sorcerers they float a little, and tend to be kind of restless, fluttering back and forth, with their long "scarf" trailing in the air behind them.

(I imagine Vexen alternately adores them and wishes he had more methodical research assistants. I picture him surrounded by a half-dozen applauding and impressed Alchemists if he ever accidentally makes something blow up.)

V: Monks
Largely female. (!! I don't know why, it just jumped out at me. And we have no Lexaeus to argue mwahaha.) People who used to be stubborn and courageous in life wind up Monks. Monks are usually steadfast and faithful, pleasant and intermingling with other ranks in their free time and unstoppable when it comes to their duty. They do not mix work and fun at all: fun is for after. This rank is predominantly female because women fighters often fall into this category.

They have an odd loping stride, frequently on all fours with their elongated front arms.

(Somebodies who might make good Monks: Tifa.)

VI: Calculators
Equally male and female. I have no idea what goes here. People who used to be deceptive and secretive become Calculators. They're slightly more outgoing than they would have been in life, and mingle with other Nobody ranks freely, but none of the other classes trust them noticeably. They tend to be rather individual in their approach to others. They're very clever and tend to like playing games [with?] and occasionally teasing others.

They have very piercing stares and tend to keep their hands held out of sight.

(Totally pulled all that straight out of you-know-where. More changeable than some extremely changeable thing.)
(Edit: After the admission of Zexion's element as illusion, I have reverted to my original choice for his servants -- Calculators -- from Illusionists, which [livejournal.com profile] refracting encouraged. The name was too similar, so it was cut.)

VII: Berserkers
Male. People who used to be, er, violent and unpredictable go here. They're calm and quiet most of the time, almost like Lexaeus, oddly. But once inspired to anger, they are incredibly aggressive and destructive and require outside influence to calm. They follow orders religiously and aren't too picky about which of the members they obey, but they don't socialize much with other servant ranks. They like football.

They tend to move slow, and follow whoever is speaking by turning their heads to watch attentiely.

(Maybe they were all jocks and bullies when they were in school. Seifer might make a good Berserker.)

VIII: Assassins
Equally male and female. People who used to be independent, self-serving but friendly, wind up Assassins. They tend to be sly and sarcastic, and are unusually disrespectful compared to the other servant ranks -- they don't have much in the way of fear, and obey as if it's their choice and not as if they'll be killed or turned into Dusks if they don't. They do excellently when alone, but are also social creatures and don't mind mixing outside their own ranks. Most of the other ranks, however, don't like them.

Maybe part of the reason why others don't like them is because they have the disconcerting habit of turning lazy circles in the air while in conversation, or vanishing beneath the surface of the ground -- as if about to attack. (They know this is disconcerting.)

(Somebodies who might make good Assassins: Yuffie.)

IX: Dancers
Female. Confident, powerful women who become confident, powerful Nobodies. They smile a lot and love to tease and lounge about; they have an unusual self-awareness that most Nobodies don't bother to acquire. They especially enjoy each other's company but are very friendly with all the ranks. They normally weren't fighters in life, and still don't especially considering themselves fighters. (You ever get the feeling that maybe a Dancer is twirling Sora around in an effort to be friendly, like, awww, he's so cute!, and then just sort of accidentally lose their grip? ...Fucking Dancers.)

Dancers are somewhat disconcertingly girlish and often raise their hands to giggle behind them. Try not to forget that those hands can fling you into a wall at brutal speeds. I'm not bitter.

(They get very protective of Demyx. They think he's cute as a button and needs their guidance and occasional cheek-pinching.)

X: Gamblers
Largely female. As Somebodies, Gamblers tended to be people who had the strength to become Nobodies but never went anywhere with it: the lazy, the indecisive. As Nobodies they tend to be more productive, rarely volunteering to tasks but always putting at least some effort into it until they're removed from the task or it succeeds. They may also be somewhat calculating, a bit manipulative. They rarely feel threatened in any way, and seem to consider most other Nobodies to be a bit on the slow side.

They start shuffling cards when bored, but they also like to flick cards at other Nobodies who annoy them.

(Very invented, very open to change. The Gamblers may be more prone to cheating than Luxord.)

XI: Geomancers
Equally male and female. People who used to be strong-willed but peaceful, considerate, tend to be Geomancers once stripped of their hearts and their compassion. They tend not to think about things too much; they follow orders but are easily distracted, and don't learn very well, or necessarily understand "NO" with their short attention spans. They like exploring and go everywhere, but tend to form irrational and permanent attachments to specific places, and then wander back there to hang out no matter how often shooed away.

They are unusually small for higher-ranking Nobody servants, maybe only half as tall as a Dusk, and drift on the breeze a foot or more off the ground.

(They adore Marluxia and maaaay tell him everything they overhear while floating about whimsically or lurking in places with people who have given up on chasing them out. Selphie would make a great Geomancer~)

XII: Ninja
Equally male and female. People who used to be argumentative or overcritical, "catty," turn into these Nobodies. They're quick and quiet, but frequently as smug as their mistress, self-involved: imagine the clique of popular kids at your high school. They'll socialize with you, but you know they just go back to their friends and laugh about what you're wearing. They like drawing attention to themselves without seeming to do so intentionally, and get miffed if ignored in friendly company.

They're smaller than the Assassins and more spinny, but not as deadly. They consider this an advantage. They can actually use their hands without slicing things to ribbons.

(I'm now thinking the Assassins and the Ninja have some like, secret intensely hateful rivalry. Every time Axel hangs out with Larxene, the Assassins hover and tsk or make up trouble so he'll get called away. Of course, the relationship between Axel and Larxene would be pretty much a more complicated version of that.)

XIII: Samurai
Largely male. People who used to be stoic, exclusively patient, or selfless tend towards Samurai. They're generally quiet, and believe in silent understanding more than open communication, which means most other Nobodies, including the bigwigs of OXIII, have no idea how to read them or deal with them. They have a rigid code of honor and hold grudges like a bitch. Also, some of them enjoy baking.

Not prone to a great deal of movement, the Samurai stand at attention more or less all the time, hands still on sword hilts, just kind of. watching.

(Somebodies who might make good Samurai: Leon. Riku fits in with them nicely, but I think Kurix would've natively been something else if not for his tie to Roxas -- maybe an Assassin. :D *chakram'd*)

Dusks
Dusks are everyone who didn't have a strong enough sense of identity to make their preferences shape their body. They have no particularly strong set of traits for that reason: all of them are obedient out of fear, but some of them are more liable to speak up than others and some will just stay quiet, and some of them will volunteer things and others will speak only when spoken to, etc, whereas all Assassins will chime in with their opinions because those are the kind of people who made Assassins.

They're intelligent but not especially good with complex logic and they find certain concepts extremely difficult. The cleverer ones can be quite dangerous, and so they're considered the most common rank to go out on a thug mission. But even the clever ones are hopelessly startled by fast movements.

They like slinky-ing around, perpetual motion even if just marching in place, and hate being made to stand still. ♥

Creepers
Creepers are the unfortunate people whose bodies were too mangled at the time of their heart's removal to make a solid Nobody. This can happen when the Heartless is on a rampage or already has many hearts, or when the slow chaos of a world in the process of being destroyed (IE, the rampaging Heartless/Nobodies have resulted in power outages, crumbling buildings, explosions, etc) their body is caught and badly damaged, leaving them alive but helpless until a Heartless finds them.

Creepers tend to have more individuality than Dusks in a wide range of personalities, because a decent number of them might have been higher-ranking Nobodies except that their bodies were too injured to form a complete Nobody. However, they are less competent because of their unfortunate size and health problems: they have a very small and defenseless natural form, and are easily dizzied, and although they can shapeshift briefly to other forms such as the weapons of higher-ranking Nobodies, they can only hold that shape for a few seconds before the strain is too much.

Most other Nobodies... don't like being around Creepers.

Thoughts on Cloud
A good number of the Square cast got lumped in there places, but Cloud is kind of an oddity. Leon felt like a Samurai to my internal Roxas, and Riku fit there also, so the natural question then was, well, Cloud is very recalcitrant, does he become a Samurai? And Roxas thinks not. In fact, he can't imagine what Cloud would be. He doesn't feel like he'd be... anything.

The final verdict was that Cloud is already split into pieces. As things stand right now, he's not intact enough to form a Nobody. It's like asking if Sora would make a Nobody if someone took his heart out again -- no, he wouldn't. He's already got a Nobody. Roxas would just be... more whole than he is.

Similarly, if Cloud lost his heart, the rest of him wouldn't do the normal deal -- the body becomes a Nobody, the soul goes with it. NUH-UH. Sephiroth has dibs on those!

The only thing I'd say is that I tend to see a bit more balance in the Snipers as far as gender goes. Which is based on nothing at all, and it's still more male than female in the breakdown.

I think you're right and I do see them as being less gender-definitive than, say, the Samurai or the Monks -- more like Luxord's Gamblers, where there's a majority but not a significant majority. You'd hardly notice there's more of one gender than the other, as opposed to the Samurai, where you'd be surprised to meet one who was female.

[identity profile] yashahime.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm...I dunno, maybe to add, I would say Samurai strike me, when I play the game, as if they were the sorts of people to whom PERSONAL honor was more important than anything, up to and including compassion. Prideful, perhaps?

Also, Creepers struck me more as being what children who were made into Nobodies would become: they really didn't have an established-enough personality to become anything stronger or more powerful.

I already know how Roxas created the Samurai -- at least, my Roxas, and I know Tor likes the idea, although I don't know if she's going to stick with it for her Roxas. My method of servant-creating is totally invented so there's no reason any of it should be treated as relevant. XD But by my method, there is noooo compassion whatsoever involved in being a Samurai. Compassionate people seem more likely to gravitate to another kind of service, Marluxia or Demyx or something.

I thought about Aerith, and what she would make, while considering these things. Roxas thought that she might make a Geomancer or a Dancer, but really, really he thought that when her heart was removed and she was stripped of her compassion, she would be a Sorcerer. And that was kind of horrifying for him.

I like your idea about Creepers, but I've had this impression since foreeeever. XD Probably for the same reasons that you formed that impression, but with different logic. I wonder what's the statute of limitation on becoming a Nobody?

[identity profile] yashahime.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
*makes faces* It comes of taking a psych class this term, I'm pretty sure; Creepers just seem to act like kids to me. ...of course, the rest of them don't act much older, up to and including Xemnas. ^^;;

I dunno about Aerith; I'm not sure she COULD lose her heart. My mind just kind of boggles at the very concept.

[identity profile] yashahime.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
....addendum: I cannot get out of my head the mental image of the Creepers and Dusks happily lined up buying balloons, and the higher Nobodies (sans Numbers) taking them away because they don't want to admit they like balloons just as much.

[identity profile] maladaptive.livejournal.com 2006-07-25 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
SO LATE BUT:

I really, really adore the image of Creepers with balloons! They're so cute and so very happy to have the balloons, and one traded cupcakes to get more balloons until it floated away and had to be chased down.

[identity profile] yashahime.livejournal.com 2006-07-25 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
...betcha when the AC is finally dug out they find 99 red balloons caused the explosions.

sorry but the song it so FITS...

Seifer would make a fantastic berserker, he really would.

I think that, for the most part, yeah; the berserkers are kind of calm and quiet, but also introverted. They're a lot easier to deal with than Saix, maybe in some ways more level headed. Saix is a wee bit more obsessive, after all.
ext_52683: (Default)

[identity profile] kay-willow.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
He IS. XD He's naturally kind of like the penultimate Berserker: mild, urbane, pragmatic, and death on wheels when pushed. Your description makes me think of shiny things. :3

Hayner might be a Berserker too, but that idea makes my inner heart-possessing Roxas cry.

[identity profile] maladaptive.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think the Dancers are pretty spot-on. I think some of them are a bit more prone to violence than others. You can kinda see that with the main pair-- one is an overly possessive and defensive she-devil and the other is the one holding her back.

But I suppose, that's why she considers herself Demyx's personal escort and Tea Baroness. XD

They're fabulous and they know it.
ext_52683: (Default)

[identity profile] kay-willow.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Teehee~ Tea Baroness. XD

I imagine there's small personality differences between every one of the Nobodies within the boundaries of the "norm", so that makes sense to me. I love those descriptions. XD They are fabulous.

[identity profile] 52-skidoo.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Largely female

Is this because of the pink thing? ^_^

I see Gamblers almost the way you do, though I'd split the genders a little more evenly. I see them as the dreamers and drifters, the ones with little ambition and no plans beyond going wherever they have the urge to go next and hoping they have a good time there. Most of them were into astrology or fortune telling or, at the least, throwing a dart at the map to choose a destination. Zidane and his fellow actors/thieves probably would have made good Gamblers.

In my mind, Luxord and the Gamblers don't cheat unless their opponents cheat, and then they try to cheat better. It depends on if cheating is an unspoken rule for the game or not. They have to play straight for the "penalty games" or else their opponent won't turn into a card or die (as in, singular of "dice") if they lose.

[identity profile] kay-willow.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's because Luxord is totally a pimp. (http://fistcrackers.livejournal.com/13305.html#cutid1)

Excellent thought about the FF9 troupe, I bet they would be perfect Gamblers. XD I didn't even think of them, I've been hung up on the cast that appeared in KH. I'm glad you were thinking along similar lines, though, that's shiny to have squared away.

*will amend that later about cheating ♥ *

[identity profile] innueneko.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha you should make "What kind of Nobody are you?" quiz out of this. ^__^ I think I'd be a sniper.

[identity profile] thetis-argent.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, if you keep these personalities that might explain why there are no Nobodies in Castle Oblivion. The Alchemists and Geomancers don't strike me as the most productive types, and if you brought either the Assassins or the Ninjas the other type would insist on coming as well and that seems like a recipe for disaster. Although, I suppose all those people wandering around in the memories might be Illusionists.
ext_52683: (Default)

[identity profile] kay-willow.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Very belatedly, you bring up a good thought -- there's some personality reasons in there to avoid having them around. I think, failing "plot hole," there might also be some property of Castle Oblivion that kept them from coming around. After all, we didn't see so much as a single Dusk there the whole time.

[identity profile] libekory.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth --

Something I can't get out of my head is how Samurai and Ninja are supposed to sort of be at odds. It's like a quote from Batman: The Animated Series or something, but it's just stuck with me -- a ninja may lie and cheat, but samurai have honor.

I've generally had the impression that Larxene liked Axel, maybe more genuinely than most of the Organization (despite her occasional snark, she looks so thoroughly enraged when she realizes he's betrayed them, and you can't be that angry without caring about the person you're mad at), but perhaps the Ninja are a bit more perceptive. ♥

It's funny that the Assassins are more genuinely friendly, considering Larxene's the one who never stabs anyone on her own team in the back. XD

I'll throw this at you -- I can't quite imagine the Ninja as being bitchy, but maybe they have an elitism; if you aren't a Ninja, you're obviously an inferior lesser Nobody, and so. The only Nobodies that are almost as cool as Ninjas are the ones who can take them on in a fair (or almost fair) fight -- Assassins get points here, so do Samurai, and Ninja have very grudging respect for Dancers because that stupid thing where they grab you and fling you into walls is very hard to avoid. Bitches. *snooty little humph! here*

Lesser Nobodies who should get points but do not: Sorcerors (they consider themselves cool already, without Ninja approval, and so they are not cool, and a Ninja will be everything but openly defiant, despite the fact that a Sorceror could still kick a Ninja's ass), Snipers (fighting from a distance strikes the Ninja as both boring and cowardly, even though it probably isn't), Dragoons (their lack of imagination loses them many points), and Berserkers, whom the Ninja consider ridiculously easy to predict and goad. No challenge~!

Monks are probably the only other Nobodies that the Ninja like as well as respect, but they think that the part where work and play are completely separate is silly.

The other classes of Nobodies get no love whatsoever. Marluxia is cool, but his servants are impossible. As far as a Ninja is concerned, there's no point to you if you can't kill things. ♥ On the other hand, Geomancers sometimes have good gossip, so they can be entertaining. (I imagine Larxene is secretly a little bit distressed by her servants' total disregard for Marluxia's, but there isn't much she can do to make them respect someone they don't...)

(All expectations aside, Yuffie would not make a good Ninja. But Rikku might.)

[identity profile] kay-willow.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Regarding the Assassins, I think you've hit the nail, though. XD The Assassins are very friendly! They'll be nice to everyone! But that doesn't mean they wouldn't turn around and stab them in the back. They don't actually form attachments to anyone, and everyone suspects they actively enjoy making other people wary. The Ninja are more openly nice-only-to-your-face.

Your description of them is great in my books, and kind of what I was envisioning besides -- cliquey, at any rate. The high school mentality. I like your breakdown of their opinions on the other classes, although I do have to note, Geomancers are very dangerous when inspired to be, and can be on par with bigger, more physically powerful Nobodies. They're just. never inspired to be. XD

Geomancer: *whee~ smells nice~ lala~*

[identity profile] libekory.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'll give Larxene credit for recognizing that the Geomancers are dangerous, but not her Ninjas. XD Until they've actually seen it! They're not quite that subtle, I don't think. XD

And indeed, very much so (on the openly-nice-only-to-your-face). Earlier this conversation occurred:

[livejournal.com profile] libekory: I'm getting from her that Larxene would actually probably be nicer to Demyx than Axel. Which is to say, not VISIBLY. But she'd more genuinely like him.
[livejournal.com profile] maladaptive: aaaw! <3
[livejournal.com profile] libekory: And wouldn't ever, you know, stab him in the back without remorse. XD
[livejournal.com profile] libekory: Axel is wrapped in twenty different kinds of lies.
[livejournal.com profile] maladaptive: ....but she might still stab him in the back.
[livejournal.com profile] libekory: Larxene is pretty straight-forward.
[livejournal.com profile] libekory: She'd stab him in the front. <3

Just thought I'd point out. XD Same wavelength exactly.

[identity profile] shinzuku.livejournal.com 2008-09-04 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
That was very inciteful and enjoyable.
