Conditioned response: Not again nono

My CNN newskitty reports that a small airplane or maybe a helicopter or something, no one knows, just crashed into a highrise in Manhattan like a half-hour ago.

I want someone to tell me this wasn't terrorists, it was just human stupidity. I'm kind of really freaking out about this. I have-- I have this thing about 9/11. And New York. And buildings.

Whaaa? Why is the Spanish channel the only one broadcasting this?! >.

I'm sure it's because there's not much to report yet, no one has any facts, so to report now would just be sensationalism and real news networks wouldn't hahahaha okay, I have no idea why they're not showing burning crumbling buildings all over the news.

[identity profile] arana-suteshi.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe. Well! It sure sounds like the Spanish channel has a lot to say about. I just don't understand any of it.

[identity profile] maladaptive.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
If you gave Spanish reporters a piece of buttered toast, they'd have a lot to say about it.

[identity profile] terrykun.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm more worried about human stupidity in terms of paranoia about terrorism. >_< This is America after all.

Maybe you didn't read very well, but you just called me stupid, TJ.

[identity profile] terrykun.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No, that's not at all what I meant. >_< I mean... I just don't want another outbreak of mass racial profiling and violence because people are quick to jump to conclusions.

*hug* I'm sure it's fine, and I didn't mean to insult you. I just hate the thought of this being spun into furthering some idiot's political agenda, when it's so likely just a case of a very unfortunate accident.

On the bright side, my ability to become hysterical about anything I blow into a huge big deal it isn't got me out of class tonight.

[identity profile] aramuin.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
According to the BBC, the FBI say "accident" but precautions are being taken. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6042306.stm)

*snuggles*

And the 'thing' is totally understandable.

[identity profile] yashahime.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
If you haven't heard by now, it was a couple of baseball players. It was an accident, not terrorist action. Also, if it helps you to feel better, a small plane or helicopter is NEVER going to be able to cause the kind of damage the 747s did; they don't carry the payload of fuel needed.

I disagree that it wasn't terrorism. I think the Yankees are terrorists. :\

*is a yankees fan, so must hate america?*

Thanks for the support. ^^ Really it's more a gut reaction -- I have very strong, nonsensical visceral ties to NYC. I think that if it had been San Fransisco I wouldn't have freaked out that hard.

[identity profile] yashahime.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Pff, I think the guy was just too stupid to fly and so they died. But your reaction was hardly unique, if it makes you feel better; I think most of America went, "THEY'RE POKING THE WOOOOOOUND!"

[identity profile] yami-chan.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I hope your feeling better now. And don't feel bad, I think everyone had a moment of "oh no, not again". I know I did. But like someone else said little planes won't ever be good for a terrorist attack. Not to mention 72 and York isn't exactly an ideal target area.

Yeah, I had that thought myself. XD From the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to... some dinky residential tower? Laaame.

*hug*

Oh! Thank you. ♥ I had a bunch of different ones at the time and I wrote down where all the ones I took came from -- but there were a lot, so I missed yours.

I looove it muchly, so I'm happy to credit you. :3

*snugs* You know, I bet before 9-11 lots of airplanes ran into buildings and it was only seen as local news. Okay, maybe not lots, but you know a crop duster has run into a barn silo before or something, and it is terrible because the guy flying this hypothetical crop duster probably died and maybe some chickens and I am going to stop killing people in my little fake world now...

Anyway, I think it is sad how reactionary the media is about this type of thing now. There was nothing to worry about, but I am sure people from all over, like you, were freaking out because of the way it was portrayed. Of course, it is still very sad for those baseball players(?) and their families. I have not actually read about it. I am gathering this more from what people on this post and at work said. Anyway...yeah..so...*hugs*

For me it's not really generic panic -- in fact, I was getting all my news from [livejournal.com profile] wy1d, who far from playing up the terrifying part of it, was actively excited about how much bandwidth CNN was using. CNN was trying to downplay it. (He copied me several IM's from his superiors about how the article up on the website did a terrible job of it.)

But I lived in NYC, and my family lives on Long Island, and my stepfather was IN the Trade Centers when they were hit on 9/11. So the hair-trigger is, for me, partly personal. I told Yasha that if it had been San Fransisco I probably wouldn't have actively hyperventilated. I would've been worried, yeah, but not really freaking out. Ehe.

Those poor chickens were heroes, man.

*loves*

All I can say is PHEW...flying into NYC in OMG 4 days is not doing too well for my nerves when things like this come up. And the last thing I need (when I have no "home" to leave stuff at) is more fekking baggage restrictions.

*hugs Kay*

OMGOMGOMG, I'm going to be in America in 4 days! *flails*

Late to the party!
