WTB [Character Respect] PST

I am getting really tired of fics where Hinamori is irreparably broken.

I understand that this is the only suggestion of her fate we currently have in canon -- that one moment in the teleconference where crazy set in, and she went from apologetic and appreciative to ranting about how Aizen may well still be manipulated by Gin, yes, that's totally it (much to Hitsugaya's horror). Yes, she was still clearly caught up in her self-deceptions, it's true. But that isn't the only thing you can do with her for the rest of her damn life. There may yet come a time when she really internalizes the platitudes she repeated at Hitsugaya: she knows that he did horrible things. she knows he's going to do more.

I understand that a good number of the people who write fic for her are as crazy as she is, and under the delusion that Aizen cared about her even remotely, and that Aizen/Hinamori is some sort of OTP that would have lasted beyond death if he had only trusted her, except that he has no respect for her as a human being and doesn't care what happens to her. You have to fix that part before you can fix the part where he tried to have her killed three times, shrugged, did it himself, and walked out without blinking, then later told Hitsugaya that actually he never really considered her to be anything more than part of his mild-mannered Clark Kent disguise.

So I understand. But I'm sick of it. Yes, it's kind of the direction we saw her in the last time we heard anything about her -- but it kind of isn't, too. When we last saw Hinamori, she had just woken from a coma she'd been in for days, maybe weeks. Just because people told her that Aizen was a bad man doesn't mean that she really knows how to believe that yet, when the last forty years of her life have revolved around him.

But now that she's conscious, she actually has the chance to correct her mental state. I'd like to think she can overcome the lies she's been telling herself to protect her hero, and become a stronger, more independent character.

A lot of well-intentioned writers who genuinely like Hinamori (probably) write about how she still believes in and adores Aizen no matter what everyone else says, or how she runs away to Hueco Mundo to be with him, and, okay, that's fine. But goddamn I'd like to see something else. It's not edgy anymore. It's just kind of delusional. No, your OTP does not have "canon penetration". Her boyfriend is not "into BDSM". He tried to murder her, you people are sick.

(And I know that in [livejournal.com profile] fear_borne, my Hinamori is certainly guilty of being still crippled by Aizen. But that's not my fault. >E The previous player made her totally psychotic, I'm trying to work her out of it naturally. Although Gin and Aizen are not making it easy, curse you [livejournal.com profile] haku!!)

Don't you people believe in her? Do you really think she's that slavishly hopeless? KT set her up to be a really strong character -- when she and her boys were presented with the Huge Hollows, Kira and Renji were the ones who ran away, and Hinamori was the one who said, "Aren't we shinigami, aren't we supposed to kill Hollows? Why are we running?" and she's the one who went back to save Shuuhei and they only went back to help her. (This is slightly more apparent in the manga than the anime, where she looked mostly too shell-shocked to retreat; in the manga, she was more proactive.) The stubborn dedication she used to become a lieutenant at her age -- which, despite Hitsugaya the genius and Yachiru, who probably cheated anyway, is impressive -- can also be turned to, I don't know, learning to make her own decisions. She's a smart and optimistic character with people skills and a lot of friends. She can make this.

I'm not saying she's definitely going to get better because I have seen it written in the stars, and I'm not even saying fandom should stop writing brainwashed!Hinamori. But I am saying that getting better is a very real possibility, and I'd appreciate it if people would start treating it like one.

I would love to see her turn around and use the way she was brainwashed and manipulated as fuel to fire her anger against Aizen.

Frankly, I think she's more likely to get better than poor Kira. Aizen may have brainwashed her, but Gin surgically removed Kira's soul.

Between Hinamori and Kira, Kira is the one who may never recover, which is why I love Kira so much it hurts.

Ditto. Poor little woobie lieutenants. :(

Also agreed. Hinamori is stronger than him, and in a way that's totally endearing. I love how broken Kira is, and how unlike Hinamori, I really think it will be a long, long time before he gets back on track.

I now present, in its entirety, Yachiru's journey to lieutenant-hood.

Stammering bureaucratic Shinigami: "W-w-well, up, Captain Kenpachi, sir, firstly congratulations, and well-"
Kenpachi: "Get on with it."
SBS: "y-y-you need to pick a l-l-lieutenant."
Kenpachi:"I pick her."
Yachiru:"Yay! I get to be a Shinigami with Ken-chan~"

That was me. Also, interesting thoughts on Hinamori. Makes me a'ponder about her. The point about her youth and her success is valid, but again, *points at Yachiru example*, and Hitsugaya is a genius. It's possible Aizen looked at the crop coming up, with Renji and Kira and what have you and picked her for her psychological propensities, knowing even if she wasn't good enough now, she might scrape up to acceptability. This is more talking about any "raw talent" she might have, not her personality.

Or maybe Gin just called dibs on Kira.

Last thing:
"I would love to see her turn around and use the way she was brainwashed and manipulated as fuel to fire her anger against Aizen." SECONDED.

That is exactly how Yachiru got her position. 100% true story.

I don't think Yachiru counts, in all honesty. My opinion of the promotion process is this: you become a captain, and they go, "You are invited to choose your own lieutenant, but here are the most promising candidates, if you'd like to choose from among them."

So in my mind Kenpachi said, "Her," and everyone went, "Is she even a shinigami?" and Kenpachi said, "Don't care. Her."

Kenpachi and Yachiru are a big item of oddity, though, because neither of them seem to have been shinigami before immediate promotion. But I point at Mayuri and Nemu as also vaguely indicating the option for arbitrariness in the lieutenancy.

So Yachiru doesn't count, and Hitsugaya we all know is the exception to every rule. But Hinamori is clearly the youngest non-Yachiru lieutenant, one assumes around 15 (because she doesn't look older than Rukia) and Hitsugaya is emphatic that Aizen's will aside, Hinamori worked for this position, studied and put in overtime and worked herself until she was qualified. So I don't credit this to raw talent or desirable personality traits in his decoy lieutenant.

I also think that Aizen isn't the kind of guy who hands you a freebie if he plans on using you. He's more discreet than that. I feel like if Aizen picks you, it's because you have the ability to do it on your own, but he wants to shape the path you're taking. Aizen wouldn't have just promoted Hinamori to third-seat and whistled innocently when people asked him if she was really right for the role -- I think she had to have been able to make it there on her own, and that he planned of that assumption, not that he just made things easy for her because it was convenient.

I totally understand what you mean. Momo isn't a completely clueless and overly compliant girl who'll just trail at Aizen's feet. The only reason why she was so devoted in the first place was because she had no reason not to be--which is subtly different than Kira, who should have kind of known that Gin was iffy and shit but maybe didn't care. :D;

I also apologize that you're being kind of forced to work Momo out of total craziness at FB. I didn't really like how psychotic the previous one was, either. :D;;

BUT YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB. ONE THAT GIN WILL TRY HIS BEST TO STOP, DAMMIT. >)

I think that's a good point -- if Aizen had been as evil around her as Gin was around Kira, I really doubt she would have fallen for him so hard. It's only because he was perfect, there was nothing wrong with him, that she idolized him so much, but Hinamori has made it clear that she will argue with a captain if she disagrees with their decision. (See: her protests at Byakuya on leaving Renji to bleed and die.) Whereas Kira... well. Kira's the one who stopped her. Don't step out of line, don't get in trouble. Even if you know it's wrong.

That's why I wonder if Kira will recover, but I'm so much more confident in Momo's recovery.

The Hinamori situation there isn't not your fault, but man. XD That one log with Hitsugaya kills me every time... It's actively a little schizophrenic in places.

SOMEDAY SHE WILL EAT GIN. She totally will. She has the face-eating icon for it and everything.

So much love for Hinamori. ♥

And .. if there are people who actually think Aizen felt something for her, lol? I like the pairing, but for how it is, not for the 'aizen loves her he just doesn't realize it!!1' mentality. D:

Hinamori in general is just a difficult character to play, I think. >>

It always boggles me, when people are like, "Oh, this story is so cute, Aizen proposes to her and they get married in a fancy wedding~" or, "I'm writing about Hinamori in Hueco Mundo, where Aizen cuddles with her every night and soothes her every fear and makes her his queen!" and I'm like. Dude. Stop bastardizing my evil bastard pairing. I love Aizen/Hinamori for its evil and one-sidedness, not because it's a fairy tale romance in my HEAD. >_>

This particular incident is -- a little over the top. XD I mean, seriously schizophrenic. Previously, Hinamori had this total spaz episode where she accused Hitsugaya of murdering Aizen more than a year after Aizen left Soul Society, and alternately cries on poor Hitsugaya's shoulder and screams at him for being a murderer and threatens him with violence and... And it's hard to follow that act, man. They haven't spoken since. My Hinamori owes her best friend some apologies.

[identity profile] dayfall.livejournal.com 2007-09-24 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly XD BLEACH IS NOT A SHOUJO MANGA so please stop thinking it is, fandom :[

.. ouch. XD That is a little .. mind-boggling, to say the least. But I'm sure you'll do Hinamori justice? 8)

You. Having my babies. Y?

Seriously, wonderfully brilliant thought up little piece on the mental state of the Hinamori. /o/ You rock my socks for it!

♥♥ I love Hinamori, I think she is a genuinely fascinating and interesting character. So people who dismiss her as an Aizen fangirl, either with good or bad intentions, make me want to eat them. I'm glad you liked my soapbox. X3

Hey, I found you through some of your Bleach writing, which was lovely. I really enjoyed this analysis. I never paid too much attention to Hinamori before, precisely because she is so often portrayed as a doormat. I like your way much better; she really was a fiercely driven person, and, geez, she hasn't had that much time to recover yet!

I just wanted to drop you a comment because this entry inspired me to try writing about it. I don't want to insult you with my amateur fanfic :P but I do want to thank you for the inspiration to test out my dormant creative muscles.

Oh, I'm glad you liked my fics. :3 And the post! Hinamori is honestly one of my favorite characters, because I'm a horrible person and appreciate seeing a bright, sweet character get totally fucked over. But I don't believe in just stomping on her and walking away, so it bothers me that I can't seem to find anything out there where she isn't... a rag doll.

I absolutely would be excited to read your fic for that reason. XD I'm too schizophrenic when it comes to writing to be able to finish the ones I have in mind. There's the captain!Hinamori fic and the fic where she goes to visit Hitsugaya's grandmother and... So reading other people's is how I get my fix. :3

So you're definitely welcome. ♥

Okay, well, I put the thing up on my journal for now. I hope you don't mind I credited your post for the idea. I'd love to hear what you think. God, I'm disgustingly nervous and virgin-y! XD

You are totally full of lies about being amateurish. D: I will comment when I get out of work or later or something, but it's absolutely well-written and very cool. ♥

lol, I actually have a fanfiction I am writing at the moment where Hinamori runs to Aizen. In the fanfiction she is doing it to see for herself who he really is, and it ends up Hitsuhina but the plot is pretty lame :P
