WTB [Character Respect] PST
I am getting really tired of fics where Hinamori is irreparably broken.
I understand that this is the only suggestion of her fate we currently have in canon -- that one moment in the teleconference where crazy set in, and she went from apologetic and appreciative to ranting about how Aizen may well still be manipulated by Gin, yes, that's totally it (much to Hitsugaya's horror). Yes, she was still clearly caught up in her self-deceptions, it's true. But that isn't the only thing you can do with her for the rest of her damn life. There may yet come a time when she really internalizes the platitudes she repeated at Hitsugaya: she knows that he did horrible things. she knows he's going to do more.
I understand that a good number of the people who write fic for her are as crazy as she is, and under the delusion that Aizen cared about her even remotely, and that Aizen/Hinamori is some sort of OTP that would have lasted beyond death if he had only trusted her, except that he has no respect for her as a human being and doesn't care what happens to her. You have to fix that part before you can fix the part where he tried to have her killed three times, shrugged, did it himself, and walked out without blinking, then later told Hitsugaya that actually he never really considered her to be anything more than part of his mild-mannered Clark Kent disguise.
So I understand. But I'm sick of it. Yes, it's kind of the direction we saw her in the last time we heard anything about her -- but it kind of isn't, too. When we last saw Hinamori, she had just woken from a coma she'd been in for days, maybe weeks. Just because people told her that Aizen was a bad man doesn't mean that she really knows how to believe that yet, when the last forty years of her life have revolved around him.
But now that she's conscious, she actually has the chance to correct her mental state. I'd like to think she can overcome the lies she's been telling herself to protect her hero, and become a stronger, more independent character.
A lot of well-intentioned writers who genuinely like Hinamori (probably) write about how she still believes in and adores Aizen no matter what everyone else says, or how she runs away to Hueco Mundo to be with him, and, okay, that's fine. But goddamn I'd like to see something else. It's not edgy anymore. It's just kind of delusional. No, your OTP does not have "canon penetration". Her boyfriend is not "into BDSM". He tried to murder her, you people are sick.
(And I know that in
fear_borne, my Hinamori is certainly guilty of being still crippled by Aizen. But that's not my fault. >E The previous player made her totally psychotic, I'm trying to work her out of it naturally. Although Gin and Aizen are not making it easy, curse you
haku!!)
Don't you people believe in her? Do you really think she's that slavishly hopeless? KT set her up to be a really strong character -- when she and her boys were presented with the Huge Hollows, Kira and Renji were the ones who ran away, and Hinamori was the one who said, "Aren't we shinigami, aren't we supposed to kill Hollows? Why are we running?" and she's the one who went back to save Shuuhei and they only went back to help her. (This is slightly more apparent in the manga than the anime, where she looked mostly too shell-shocked to retreat; in the manga, she was more proactive.) The stubborn dedication she used to become a lieutenant at her age -- which, despite Hitsugaya the genius and Yachiru, who probably cheated anyway, is impressive -- can also be turned to, I don't know, learning to make her own decisions. She's a smart and optimistic character with people skills and a lot of friends. She can make this.
I'm not saying she's definitely going to get better because I have seen it written in the stars, and I'm not even saying fandom should stop writing brainwashed!Hinamori. But I am saying that getting better is a very real possibility, and I'd appreciate it if people would start treating it like one.
I would love to see her turn around and use the way she was brainwashed and manipulated as fuel to fire her anger against Aizen.
Frankly, I think she's more likely to get better than poor Kira. Aizen may have brainwashed her, but Gin surgically removed Kira's soul.
