Meandering! The Persona and the Odin Sphere

Jason and I played up to the first dungeon sequence in Persona 3, and I approve. Characters and game system seem cool, I like the atmosphere and the ideas. Jason pondered something that may not actually be addressed in the game: what does it say about Minato, that he has all these Personas, which are supposedly representations of your soul, etc? It's like he switches personalities, identities, at the drop of a hat. What must it be like to know someone like that? Wouldn't it be freaky? Silent hero syndrome, though.

He also showed me the complete collection of videos of Gwendolyn's story in Odin Sphere. I'm glad she and Emo Knight Oswald? got a happy ending, for about two seconds before the end of the world. I'm probably very spoiled and it won't have the same impact as if I'd played it from scratch (assuming you open the character scenarios one at a time; this may not be correct) but it was very engaging.

So they're both on my list. Sigh. Might buy them on Friday, when I go to see Hellboy lololol

I think it might be because he doesn't have an initial personality, since you as the player create his character as you play the game (like, which responses you choose, who you go out with, etc.). But if you could only choose one Persona, it wouldn't be a fun game xD

A+++ for you for playing Persona ♥

Yeah, silent hero syndrome makes me sad. XD It hasn't stopped everyone I know from feeling like they have very personal impressions of what Tir and Riou from Suikoden are like, though. (Hilarity is fanboys arguing that Tir is way more badass than Riou, personality-wise, even though neither actually said a word you didn't pick out for them.)

It is kind of meta. X3 This is your faceless character with minimal personality, do with him what you will...! I do feel like I have a very vague grasp of what his base character might be like at the moment, though, so it's not all bad. Maybe I'll feel more comfortable with it as I play.

♥ Everyone loves it, so I figured I'd give it a try, and it looks like fun times. I've always been a sucker for that dating sim time management thing, though. XD

[identity profile] almateria.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never played Suikoden :O I knew that the heroes didn't have names, but I didn't know that they didn't have personalities either. It's a cool idea! I like that you can do whatever you want with Minato, but sometimes it's a bit awkward for me because I have the "cool, quiet" personality stuck in my head for him xD You should read the manga once you get further into the game, it's hilarious ♥

Oh god the dating. When you start hitting the higher ranks, the girls can get jealous if you go out with someone else :'3

I'll look it up when I'm finished with the game. X3 And I wouldn't say they don't have personalities. Only the first two games have silent protagonists, but I totally feel like I know what kind of people Tir and Riou are. XD I only meant to say that normally I don't hear other people agreeing, so it was striking when I heard fanboys arguing about who had the cooler personalities, when... the silent hero is supposed to be whatever personality you want. XD

Teehee. But don't they know he needs to build social links?!

[identity profile] almateria.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, okay! Yeah, that does sound odd xD

Social Links? What are those? D:
this game is ridiculous, but I love it ♥

I think that's the thing that makes it hard for me to see Minato as an actual character, because he doesn't have a soul of his own. The player has to give him a personality and the persona and such, so I see him as more doll-like than anything else.

Course all the girls that 'Minato' dates clearly don't see it that way. >>

So far, my impressions of him as a character are like that, too -- he was quiet and passive when confronted with his first obviously weird Dark Hour, instead of doing what I would've done, which is flip out, and he didn't investigate, he just continued on his way. Then he has his whole creepy sure-I'll-sign, sure-I'll-shoot-myself moments. Between the two, my impression of him as a character is exactly like that -- kind of doll-like, eerie, still, etc.

But YEAH I doubt his girlfriends agree. Maybe they're interacting with his "persona" of the day. XD

[identity profile] unite.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well actually, the multiple persona for Minato thing - if you want to read into it - could very well have to do with the fact that he doesn't have any one set personality.

It gets kind of meta at this point! The Persona-switching thing as an eerie game mechanic to execute the player personality...

I have a vague idea of his character, at this point, but it's entirely possible from both my impressions and the game itself that he's supposed to be read like that.

Your journal titles always remind me of an anime episode title xD I love it.

Yukari is my favoritest, even if 90% of fandom hates her D:

That's pretty much why I stay away from the fandom itself and just read fanfiction.

I love that Macro xD

I've seen you before. When I was out searching for communities through the interests pages, I kept seeing your name under users with matches. Of course, I edit my interests like every other week, so some aren't there anymore (Xenogears, Xenosaga, Minato/Yukari, Breath of Fire, Ichigo/Orihime, Shelke, etc etc)

I ended up shying away from commenting when that kept happening, but...

Mind if I friend you? You strike me as a hip and happening dood.

Be my guest. ^^

Yukari is pretty cool! She seems like a nice girl, a little bad at shooting herself, but she has a backstory that I can respect and human decency and she's a fun character so far.

Yeah, I sort of model them after those oldschool anime titles. XD

Odin Sphere is gorgeous, even though the limited inventory can make me >EEE at times. There's also quite a bit of slowdown during boss fights and such. BUT STILL. GORGEOUS. And yeah, you play one "book" for each character (something like 5-7 chapters each, iirc), with a final book for the game-ending series of boss fights. It's pretty clever, actually, the way they weave the stories together.

Oh, and the food. I'm a sucker for games that integrate food/cooking. XD

You might also want to give GrimGrimoire (another Vanillaware title) a shot if you get the chance. It's a joint with Nippon Ichi, so it's a strategy RPG rather than an action one. It tends to get mediocre reviews since there's really only one battle map for the entire game, but the gameplay makes up for that, I think. Also, I love the main character, and she and her girlfriend are adorable together.

Oh man, I was sold from the moment Gwendolyn's story started playing. It was just so gorgeous, which isn't something you normally say about the whole scrolling 2D platformer thing. And the way the stories weave together is really brilliant, so... yeah, I want to play it. XD Even though now I like, won't be surprised when she ends up married to Oswald.

I think I wound up getting Atelier Iris instead of Grim Grimoire and then... never playing it. I do have a soft spot for girlbonding, but I'm a bit wary of strategy RPGs... I love strategy games, but these days they make very complex strategy games, and it's so easy for them to go askew for me. I love Disgaea, but there's too much grinding for me; I liked the idea of Phantom Brave, but I seem to recall the battle system felt way too busy for me.

At least you still have Oswald's side of the story! Perhaps there will be some surprises there.

If nothing else, GrimGrimoire has zero grinding because it has zero leveling, but it can get a little on the complex side. For me, it was the perfect blend of planning and chaos, but then, I kind of like the hectic nature of Gensui V's map battles while most everyone else seems to hate them. XD; Maybe I'm destined to stand alone in my fannish love.

"Quite a bit" is an understatement in my case. I don't know if it's because my memory card has about 1100MB left or what, but when there are more than three characters (and then some) fighting on-screen, HELLO SLOWDOWN. Very annoying, especially when playing Mercedes. :(

[identity profile] voicing.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore Gwendolyn and Oswald together. Their ending scene in Gwen's story was sweet to the point of diabetes, but I was grinning and going, "Awww! So cute" the entire time. X3

If you find them, DEFINITELY get Odin Sphere, and look for Persona 3: FES especially. It has some more goodies than the original did (costumes!), plus a playable Aigis after-story.
