"There aren't enough candles," she said, concerned.
"Even if there were enough candles, they wouldn't all fit on the cake," Ichigo muttered, mostly to himself because he was sure she wasn't listening. "She's like a hundred and fifty years old. Now get away from that thing."
Edible things and Orihime were a calamitous combination at the best of times. She'd only been allowed near the cake because it was complete (Yuzu-chan had baked it) with the promise that she would do absolutely nothing more threatening than prepare it for the upcoming party.
"I guess just three will have to do," Orihime mused to herself. "No, maybe five."
Like it would matter to Rukia if there were one hundred and fifty or just one candle. Ichigo shook his head, not unfondly, and filled a bowl with American-style pretzel snacks for the guests. Just a handful of people -- shinigami and human friends mingling ever so discreetly in Orihime's small apartment.
"You've done so much work," Orihime said, excitedly, looking around at the decorated room.
Ichigo shrugged one shoulder. "It was easy stuff. I got a lot of it done while you were out buying plates and cups."
"You were so smart to come with the decorations already! But... Where's the balloons?" Orihime asked, tilting her head and surveying the decorations with wide eyes. There was a loose streamer in her hair, the rumpled blue paper standing out in the long orange strands.
Ichigo reached out and plucked it loose, leaving her wide-eyed and flushed, probably embarrassed. "I didn't get any."
Her eyes went even wider. "It's not a birthday party without balloons," she protested.
For a brief moment, Ichigo was stumped for a response to that. Yuzu and Karin didn't even demand balloons at their birthday partie anymore. "...She's not a little kid, Inoue. And we're not even outside."
"I'll go get them myself," she decided, apparently not listening to him again. "Maybe ones that are in cute shapes, like hearts and stars."
Ichigo scowled. "Those are like three times more expensive than the normal kind. Just get those!"
But there was something about the way her expression turned crestfallen... She was saying, "Yes, of course -- you're right. I'm sure you know Kuchiki-san better than I do. She won't care what shape they are, probably. Probably I'm the one who's interested in cute shapes," and laughed, self-deprecating.
It took a minute, and then Ichigo sighed, irritable, and reached into his back pocket for his wallet. He tossed it at her and said, "Buy the ones with the shapes. And -- some more candles."
Maybe it was worth it for the way Orihime's smile quickly brightened the room again, outshining a hundred and fifty birthday candles.
