Oh, it turns out it's not just a spell? It's the same glowy thing that happens to Asbel! It started happening just recently, the same as with him. The doctors think it's related to trauma trauma trauma.
But Cheria is still kind of pissed off at him. He doesn't notice, rambling a little bit sheepishly about the good old days when she used to try to fix his wounds by, say, wrapping old socks around them.
Cheria cuts off his happy place by saying that it's been a long time, and people change. She can defend herself, so she doesn't need Asbel protecting her.
I am so torn in my loyalties, and I like it when a game does that to me.
I genuinely feel like what Cheria said to Asbel was super-insensitive; a symptom of her very obvious crush as much as her loneliness and fear. Resenting him for doing what he told her wanted to do doesn't seem quite fair.
At the same time, she begged him to stay behind because she didn't want to lose everyone all in one fell swoop and he lied to her face and then disappeared in the night. He's been too busy to worry about home, projecting his feelings for his father onto her and their home, and it's understandable that she doesn't have a lot of patience, seven years later, for his nostalgia and guilt.
By leaving, Asbel accidentally drove home the point that Hubert and Sophie (a girl he'd just met) were seemingly more important to him than Cheria or Cheria's feelings; his losses more important than what remained.
But I guess so far she is handling it better. She resents him, but she's NOT letting it get in the way of what needs to be done. She's not wasting time punishing him for it, or demanding any explanations. She's just not pretending to not be hurt.
I think that for her it's probably easy to dismiss or write off his ideals, because to be honest, it's A) been a long time since he last talked to her about them, and B) it probably all sounds like self-justification to her.
Really? You want to protect everyone you care about? Well, two of those people are gone, you don't exactly seem to have been seeing Richard all the time, and you betrayed me and left me alone for years, so who exactly are you protecting, you hypocrite?
I do love the fact that I sympathize with both of them. I like the fact that she's mean to Asbel and I flinch for him, but I also know that Asbel was a total douche to her and she's heartbroken.
I agree with the both of you on the situation. It's very interesting how easy I can sympathize with the both of them and see their point of view over the other. And yet, I can't take a side completely.
I think even more to the point, in a not important plot way, her parents are also dead (it's not really a spoiler since it's not important to the plot at all but I think Cheria's parents died at a point where she could remember them). I wouldn't be surprised if she had some abandonment issues. I figure the way little Cheria tried to reach out to little Asbel could have been similiar to how her Grandpa reached out to her. Only it didn't work. Which hurt all the more. X(
On a less theory ramble, Cheria's also probably feeling down about Lord Aston as well. In her profile she is described as feeling indebted to the Lhant family with a desire to be useful due to her family serving them. So I imagine Asbel isn't the only reason for her frosty face (even if it is a big part of it).
Regarding Richard, did you guys get the SQ where Asbel tried to show the ring to the knight before he left with Cheria? The knight flat out says get lost, not even recognizing the significance of it. Asbel is all, 'well I guess things were easier when we were kids, huh' and Cheria's all....'yeah' and walks off without him. I can only imagine what Cheria thought there. I on the hand was thinking, poor Richard did Asbel not try to keep contact with him as well? =(
slkdfjskljg we didn't get that sidequest! I meant to refer to Kouli's guide so we didn't miss any sidequests, but I completely forgot, we've just been winging it. So naturally we walked past a dozen awesome things.
Then I discovered that Kouli's guide is now $10 and hahahaha, no. $10 for a half-hearted poorly-written potentially-plagiarized barebones outlines of where scenes are? No thanks. Try $2-3.
But I found a FAQ on GameFAQs! (and now I'm tempted to try restarting...)
Or wait, would that be a bad thing since they were taken down? X(
Either way I'm glad you found a guide, Graces is a pretty long game I, think, so getting all the SQ's is a good thing when you can (ecspecially the play one). XD
