Seeking: A new bank

Saw the Avengers yesterday. That movie is really good, Joss Whedon fixed a lot of things I was mrr about, I loved everyone in it, I'm excited for more, and I feel like a horrible person because of all the bad thoughts it inspires. :D

But mostly I'm posting to ask, does anyone have any recommendations for a bank? Now that I'm moved, I have discovered that there are no Chase banks within thirty miles of my apartment, and they only have unhelpful things to say, like, "Well, mail it in!" Because I love sending signed checks through the mail...

Tell me where you do your banking!

I'm glad you liked the movie! It was terribly shiny. And I want to hear the horrible thoughts. >D

Husband and I use Bank of America, which we like because they have locations every-fucking-where. We never have to worry about traveling (within the country) and not having a bank within a reasonable distance. Although a lot of our decision is because he travels so much for work, we have had no problems with them whatsoever.

My parents and sister have been Suntrust customers forever and love it. My sister always gets her mortgage and CDs/bonds through them and always says they've been great with giving her awesome rates.

So hey, two options!

I really like ING Direct. It's all based online, but they have partnerships with some ATM companies. But they're really user-friendly and the Customer Service people were really nice. I regret ever leaving. As soon as my finances level out a little, I'm going back.

Otherwise, I would recommend trying to find a credit union? They're better than evil banks. Bank of America sucks; don't ever use them.

I have PNC right now, and the big issue I have with them is that even if you opt-out of their overdraft protection, they will still authorize some payments. So, even if you tell them to never pay something if the money's not in the account.... they will still do it, at their discretion, and then charge you escalating service fees. I also don't like their Virtual Wallet set-up. Their mobile banking app is good, though.

Not reading the comments above mine because eek there might be spoilers and Avengers doesn't come out until August here. I am insanely jealous of you right now for getting to see it.

My recommendation for a bank will be entirely unhelpful, but I want to talk about my bank anyway. My bank is the First National Bank of Northfield, which is in Northfield, Minnesota, the same town my college was in. Obviously I signed up for college convenience, but they are just so sweet and awesome I couldn't bear to close my account. They always had a little plate of cookies when I went in, and have always been friendly and cheerful, even when I go to crazy places around the world and buy ridiculous things.

But the best part about my bank is its historical significance! Way back in the 1800s there was a gang going around robbing banks. Perhaps you have heard of them? The Jesse James Gang? One fine morning, the gang rode up to the small town of Northfield and staged a famous hold-up of the bank. One young Northfield citizen raised the call of alarm, "Get your guns, boys, they're robbing the bank!" and all of Northfield rallied to the cry. There was a shootout that killed and wounded many members of the gang, an incident that led to their arrest soon after.

Every year in Northfield they have the Defeat of Jesse James Gang Celebrations, complete with a full reinactment of the event, horses and all. The actual bank front is now a historical society, but my bank HQ are just down the street from it.

I feel like if my bank could protect my money against the James Gang, I can fully trust it to protect my money now. Bring it on, phishers!
