Spent two hours wrestling with my taxes, gave up. I'll have to go to H&R Block next weekend and pay them to take this mess off my hands. Also spent some time looking at apartments/houses?? but it was not fruitful.

Meanwhile, I have been having the random want to replace all my icons with The World Ends With You character poses. Like, FUCK YOU, YURI AND SIF AND DINOSAUR ICONS. I NEED TWENTY ICONS OF SHIKI MAKING FLIPPY HAND GESTURES.

That's it right there, you've hit the nail on the head. He's a Nice Guy who has essentially decided that Shepard is into him, or should be into him, by virtue of being the only human male who hangs out with her. I never flirted with him; I chose only friendly dialogue options, e.g. reassuring him when he was guilt-ridden over what happened when I saved him from the beacon on our first world. I had only one even remotely meaningful conversation with him, when he told me about how he want to a special facility for training biotics, and promptly turned it into something romantic in his head: "So... you make a habit of getting this personal with everyone?" I chose the least "Just you, Lieutenant. /eyebrow wiggle" option deliberately.

But the next time I talk to him, he hijacks a meaningful conversation three sentences in (about his concerns about rushing and taking things for granted relating to his father) to get jealousy on me because I had talked to Liara. Literally, all that's necessary for this conversation hijack is Liara's existence on board the ship.

It's probably not his fault. This romance system is kind of poorly developed. But I'm not into him because I've barely spoken to him and he's breathing down my neck about the other potential love interest. It makes him seem like he's staked a claim, takes friendly overtures as romantic, interprets the presence of a ~bisexual~ on the ship as a threat, and then tries to "punish" me to make me feel bad by shutting down when I tell him it's none of his business who I'm into or not into.

Maybe they're doing it on purpose. Maybe he's supposed to be an accurate representation of the Nice Guy phenomenon, to point out how unappealing it actually is— orrr am I giving the game too much credit?

I agree that it's probably not intentional, although I wouldn't be surprised if there's at least one ME writer out there who interprets the low number fem Sheps romancing Kaidan to reaffirm his "Nice Guys finish last" mentality. Just like there's one guy involved with Parks and Rec who thinks Ron Swanson's appeal lies in sexism!

Anyway, I don't even get where that mindset would come from. A running plotline through out the show is how Ron is repeatedly topped by his ex-wives. His current girlfriend is a fierce, sexy amazon who provides for her family singlehandedly. Ron is a great character precisely because while his interests may swing into typically-macho-male territory, he's more than that. It's always saddening when anyone tries to sum a character up in a few key traits and nothing can ever deviate from those traits.
